 | IPEVO Free-1 Skype Certified USB VOIP Internet IP Phone Black handset for PC Laptop Notebook win IF award |
 | "not bad for the price" | 2007-12-23 |
This phone worked pretty well on my old PowerBOok and my new MacBook for a while but eventually stopped showing up when I plugged it into the USB port. I opened the phone and found that the shielding wires from the cable were splayed out all over and I think they were shorting out against some other components. I cleaned it up and it's working again but I'm sure that's not the last of the problems: it's kind of a cheap toy-like phone. In the end, it's way better than the headsets that I've used and better than talking at my MacBook (which, surprisingly, works fine with Skype - no headphones, etc just talking toward the MacBook .. no feedback occurs). Also, this cable problem has nothing to with rough handling on my part or poor design of the cable. It looks like it's just sloppy assembly. I'll probably try a cordless one when this breaks but for now it's still doing it's job and it's lasted a LOT longer than I expected. Not bad for the low price.

 | Krups 132-46 Sandwich Express Sandwich Maker |
 | "Does the job. Dummy lights are pretty confusing." | 2005-03-18 |
It makes sandwiches just fine. I'm not sure why everyone's complaining about cleaning it up - it's all teflon so all you have to do is a quick wipe to clean it up. It does ooze but get over it. I guess I buy small bread because it fits my bread slices just fine.. I think the idea is that if you use "normal" bigger slices it kind of crimps the edges that hang outside of the square area. Anyway, I will say that the "dummy lights" on the top are not very well thought out. Red light and green light. Which is which? They're both on most of the time. I just ignore them and it works fine.

 | Makita UC4000 16" Electric Chain Saw |
 | "Works great at school - planning to buy one" | 2002-11-16 |
I'm a sculpture student at an art school and we use these chainsaws for carving, for making kerf cuts to carve with hand tools, and I've also used it for kerf cutting pine logs to hew with a hatchet and chisel. I don't have much to compare them to but they work great. We have a Stihl that I didn't like as much, so that's probably a good review for the Makita. The Makita is heavier, but it seems to be balanced better. The chains were a little loose when we got them. The hand guard safety thing seems backward but that's not a big deal. The cord is a little inconvient sometimes since it's got a rubber housing around the plug so you can't use some extension cords. The chain adjustment is not as well placed as our Stihl. The only complaint I have (and maybe it's the same with other saws) is that it guzzles oil! I have to fill it up about every 15 minutes. Also, when I use it at certain angles (like pointed downward) it likes to spray oil. The floor and the wood get oil spray on them. This is a neat tool for woodcarving and the timber-framing type stuff I've been trying, though, and I'd like to have one. Oh yeah, the school bought these based on the fact that a lot of hard-core timber-framers buy this same saw.
