| Coy LaHood (played by Richard Dysart) is a man unused to people standing in his way. He is a successful hydraulic-miner, and he is going to blast a small community of pan-miners out of his way. However, when a preacher (Clint Eastwood) rides into the community, he finds that things aren't necessarily as easy as he had hoped. Can the preacher stand up to LaHood and survive? Perhaps, but the crossfire is going to be murderous!
This is another one of Clint Eastwood's great Westerns, one that I never seem to tire of. It's got an interesting plot, and a lot of great action. I liked the peak the movie gave into Californian history, showing the hydraulic mining that was so environmentally destructive it was banned during the 19th century. It's a great movie, really exciting and very entertaining. I highly recommend it!

![]() | "I was quite pleased with this book" | 2009-11-05 |
| In this very interesting book, author and historian Michael R. Beschloss goes through the various times when American presidents had to make tough decisions, taking their reputations into their hands and doing what was best but perhaps not popular. Presidents are covered here from George Washington choosing to back the unpopular Jay Treaty, through Franklin Roosevelt's decision to help England when the country did not recognize an enemy that needed to be fought, and on to Ronald Reagan's decision to both challenge the Soviet Union (much to the Liberal's chagrin) and work towards a verifiable treaty with them (much to the Conservative's chagrin).
Well, you can't please all of the people all of the time, but I must say that I was quite pleased with this book. I found the narrative to be quite interesting and informative, and I thought that the author did a good job of showing American presidents at their finest. I hope that presidents in the future continue to lead the nation, instead of just reading polls and following each change of public opinion. [By the way, a great book that goes into depth on Franklin Roosevelt's willingness to take the fight to America's unrecognized enemies is 0029012708 Hitler Versus Roosevelt: The Undeclared Naval War by Thomas A. Bailey and Paul B. Ryan.]

![]() | "A really fun series of fantasy books" | 2009-10-26 |
| In this sequel to Wizard at Large, Ben Holiday receives the joyous news that his wife, Willow is pregnant, but his joy is short-lived when she tells him that she must now go off. To make matters worse, a troublesome old conjurer returns to Landover from exile, and unbeknownst to anyone else, he has brought along an evil fairy creature called the Gorse. The Gorse has plans to conquer Landover, and he begins by locking Holiday, Strabo and Nightshade in the Tangle Box, the prison that had held him for so long. If they are to escape, it is up to Holiday, Strabo and Nightshade to overcome the magic that holds them and work together. And, if Willow is to have a healthy baby, she must gather dirt from three worlds that are the roots of the baby - Landover, Earth and the land of the Fairy. Meanwhile, the Gorse has plans for Landover, and he is going to let nothing stand in his way.
This is another great book, from a really fun series of fantasy books. I didn't expect a lot out of the Landover books, as the premise sounded a little immature to me. But, I nonetheless found these to be a fun series of books with interesting characters and suspenseful stories. I really enjoyed this book, Book #4 in the series, and do not hesitate to recommend it, and the rest of the series to everyone!

![]() | "Very inspiring and very entertaining" | 2009-10-15 |
| It's 1836, and General Sam Houston (played by Richard Boone) is preparing to defend Texas's independence from the new Mexican President, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. He needs Colonel Travis (Laurence Harvey) and Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) to buy him the time he needs to organize his army. And so, joined by American legend Davie Crockett (John Wayne) and a group of about 30 Tennesseans, the men make their stand at the Alamo mission, on the San Antonio River. This is the story of the great stand at the Alamo, where a small group of men stood against overwhelming odds for thirteen days.
This is a great movie, very inspiring and very entertaining. This 1960 production has come under considerable criticism for the liberties it takes with the historical record of the battle, but nonetheless it really is a movie worth seeing. Unlike the IMAX movie, Alamo: The Price of Freedom, that I saw down in San Antonio, this big-budget extravaganza features a large and impressive Mexican Army, and better character development. My fifteen-year-old son and I really enjoyed this movie, with all of its action and daring-do. We both give it a big thumb's up!

![]() | "A very entertaining read" | 2009-10-08 |
| Tom Sawyer is a mischievous boy, fighting and playing and generally having a good time in antebellum St. Petersburg, Missouri. His imagination takes him around the world, while he and his friends find adventure much closer to home.
This book is widely recognized as a classic of modern Western literature, and it is easy to see why. The story oscillates between two poles - at one pole it is a fun and light-hearted story of boys having their own largely harmless fun. At the other pole it is a suspenseful story of murder and danger. The story moves back and forth between the two poles, seamlessly weaving together a story that is both fun and suspenseful. Now, this story has been censored from some library shelves, due to the fact that the author used the now-discredited "n-word" throughout the book. The thoughtless racism that is demonstrated throughout the story is shocking to a modern reader, and no doubt will put off many readers. But, the story is a true-to-life depiction of what things were like in Missouri at the time, including both the good and the bad. I found this to be a very entertaining read, and it is quite apparent why the book has enthralled readers since its first publication in 1876. I really enjoyed my time with this book, and think that you will as well.

| Rambo: First Blood | ||
![]() | "A great movie, one that really speaks to me" | 2009-10-06 |
| It's been a long, hard road for John Rambo (played by Sylvester Stallone) - the last surviving member of an American special forces unit in Vietnam, who now finds it impossible to integrate back into civilian society. When he wanders into the poorly named Hope, Washington, he is arrested for vagrancy by the sheriff (Brian Dennehy), and abused by the deputies. But then something in Rambo snaps, and he escapes, and makes the sheriff and his men pay when they come looking for him. American society has pushed Rambo too far, and now he is pushing back!
This is a great movie, one that really speaks to me. I was very close to a Vietnam War survivor (his entire unit was wiped out while he was in the hospital with malaria) who also had trouble reintegrating after the war, and I saw how hard and confusing it was for him. Sylvester Stallone does a great job in this movie in giving Rambo a hard edge, while in the end making him the hero (or perhaps antihero) of the story. So, let's just say this: if you like guy-movies with lots of explosions and gunfire, then you will like this movie. And, if you know any Vietnam vets, then you will have a special connection to this movie, like me. I highly recommend this great movie!

| Ulysses S. Grant : The Unlikely Hero (Eminent Lives) | ||
![]() | "An excellent, if short, biography of America's eighteenth president" | 2009-10-05 |
| In this 2005 work, British author and historian Michael Korda turns his attention to that now nearly forgotten American Hero, Ulysses S. Grant. This biography is, in spite of its brevity, an excellent work on the general. It gives an excellent look into his history, and an excellent analysis of what he did and why.
This book was written as part of the Eminent Lives series, which explains its shortness. And, in fact, its shortness its part of its excellence. There are times when you wish to read 400+ pages on someone, and enjoy the depth of understanding such a book gives you. But, there are times when you want a biography that is short and to the point, and this book is for those times. I really enjoyed this book, and think that it is an excellent biography of America's eighteenth president. I don't hesitate to give it my highest recommendations!
| Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Other Stories (Courage Classics) | ||
![]() | "Three excellent stories" | 2009-10-04 |
| Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-94) was a Scottish novelist and poet who is best remembered for his adventurous fiction - including Treasure Island (perhaps the greatest pirate story ever written), and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (one of the greatest horror stories every written). This book combines three his more haunting tales. They are:
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - This story is actually something of a mystery. A lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson becomes aware of the existence of a man who seems to radiate evil, a man called Mr. Edward Hyde. But, to Utterson's consternation, it appears that Hyde is tied up with his good friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll. There seems to be no end to the evil of Mr. Hyde, for even when he dies, it appears that Hyde has one last, and terrible secret to reveal. The Body Snatcher - Every night, a group of acquaintances visit for a drink at the George at Debenham. But, when one of them, an old Scotsman by the name of Fettes, hears that Doctor Wolfe Macfarlane is in town, he seems to lose all control. It seems that years before, Fettes and Macfarlane were partners in the crime of bodysnatching, but it got much worse than that! Olalla - When a man goes to Spain for his health, he little realizes that he might just be putting his health in great peril. The Spanish family that he boards with has grown corrupt over the years, culminating in an unspeakable evil. These really are excellent stories, and it is easy to see why the author has been as influential on later writers as he has been. So, if you want to read three stories written by a master of the craft, then get this book. You will not be disappointed!

![]() | "A lot of fun to watch" | 2009-10-01 |
| The new owner (played by Margaret Whitton) of the Cleveland Indians has come up with a great idea - fill the team with misfits and losers, and when the team totally tanks, move it to Florida! But, she didn't figure on Jake Taylor (Tom Berenger). Taylor leads the team on a last chance drive to win the pennant, and become stars. But, can this unlikely group of heroes pull it together and actually win? Just watch their smoke!
This is a really fun movie. The characters are very interesting - Tom Berenger playing the washed-up catcher who wants to go out in victory, Charlie Sheen playing the wild young pitcher who needs help to actuate his potential, Corbin Bernsen playing the prima donna old hand who needs a wakeup call, Wesley Snipes playing the cocky base-stealer who is sure he can be a star, Dennis Haysbert playing the fatally flawed but stoic voodoo worshipper, and so many more. Yeah, this is a great movie, a lot of fun to watch. If you like baseball, then you will enjoy this off-beat, losers-to-winners movie. I know I do!

This is a very cute story. The illustration work is very good, and goes along with the story excellently. The story of the girl being brave, even when she doesn't necessarily feel it is a nice life lesson. And, the main thing to me is that my little reader enjoyed the book, which is good enough for me. We both recommend this book to you.

| When a foul-tempered old sailor, takes up residence at his parents' inn, young Jim Hawkins little realizes that the man is on the run. But, when the Captain dies with a group of pirates closing in, Jim ends up with a map to a huge pirate treasure in his hands. Now, together with Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney, the three find themselves a ship, and set out to find this marvelous treasure island. But there's dirty work afoot, and it will take all of Jim pluck and daring if he is going to win through to the treasure...or even just to stay alive!
Well, I have seen a number of movies based on this true classic of Western literature, but I have finally read the original story. As for me, I found it to be quite entertaining - filled with lots of danger and daring-do. I have read a lot of late 19th/early 20th century boy's book, and this one is the king of the genre. No yucky romance, indeed, little in the way of females at all. It's muscular fiction, of the sort that boys have read for many generations. I must say that I really liked Mr. Stevenson's portrayal of the pirate life - trying to maintain order and discipline amongst a violent and highly-individualized crew, and so forth. I found the book to be very realistic, and all the more entertaining for that. This is a great book, one that has stood the test of time and truly deserves to be called a classic. I highly recommend this book to all boys, and all men who are boys at heart! (And, to all girls who like muscular fiction!)
