Myofascial Pain and Fibromyalgia Syndromes: A Clinical Guide to Diagnosis and ManagementMyofascial Pain and Fibromyalgia Syndromes: A Clinical Guide to Diagnosis and Management
Rated 5 Stars"A really great book" 2009-10-10
But not for the easily intimidated. I had to spend time with my old pathology texts and online to get full benefit from this book in terms of understanding. The use of trigger points to control MPS is very useful and where you can reach the trigger point it is some times possible to desensitize it with finger pressure. Although the shallow dry needle works better. It will help you manage your own treatment of either of these conditions. I also found that Dr. Paul Lam's new Tai Chi for Arthritis (available from taichiproductions, unfortunately Amazon doesn't carry it yet) to be helpful. I had Fibromyalgia for several years before it resolved into MPS and with the help of a up to date remologist, a chiropractor and this book that is now gone as well. The Tai Chi helped as welland also helped my diabetes. There are a number of large studies of the benefits of Tai Chi that are available on line.

Whether or not you go with Tai Chi this book is an excellent resource and can save you a lot of faffing about by uniformed MDs. Neither Syndrome is usually mentioned in Med school except that they are imaginary! Neither has a distinct pathology so obviously they can't be real! The Arthritis Foundation disagrees and most up to date remologists do as well. The realize that the Syndromes need treatment. But usually drugs are used which don't get rid of the Syndromes the way that dry needling does.

I am a chemist and was an active EMT for some 22 years.

That pretty much says it all. The price is reasonable for this type of sand paper. The 80 grit takes off old paint and junk. The assortment is just what you need if you do a variety of jobs but no really large jobs.

Essentially the same as the Bostich kit which is a better deal. Except as noted under my review.

Works well where you can't swing a hammer or if you have problems swining a hammer at all. SAFTY WARNING! The unit will fire fairly easily when connected and paradoxically the higher the presur the easier it fires. If you aren't sure if the nain is in then pull and you should feel the magnet holding the nail. DO NOT PUSH as the nailer will fire.

Also do a little practice nailing first to make sure you have it right. There is a temptation to use constant pressure to fire blows fast. That will result in a bent nail more likely than not. Keeping a pace about as fast as a hammer will swing works well for me.

Overall does what I need.

Makita MAC5200 3 HP Jobsite Air CompressorMakita MAC5200 3 HP Jobsite Air Compressor
Rated 4 Stars"Excellant compressor for the money" 2009-08-12
The version I got has better wheels than described but if I was dragging it around a job site I would replace them with steel/pnumentaic wheels. As a shop compressor where you move it as needed it works very well indeed. As a stationary for a small shop it is fine. As a job site compressor where it is moved around it is not my first or even third choice (even replacing the wheels). A gas compressor is much more practical and the very high current draw of this unit limits the real extension cord length and effective portability. The version I got starts at 110psi and stops at 140. Drives a framing nailer and a UFO screw nailer just fine. There seems to be a possible issue with shut off but unless it is real and I have warintee problems I am satisfied. Well the auto shutoff no longer does. Their tech was helpful but they only get the same totally useless manual that the users do. They recently switched to Eagle for their compressors. They apparently don't make any compressors but just re-brand. I may change my rating depending on service that I get.

BTW don't count on service even in metro areas. There is no service in Colorado Springs, nearest Makita depot is Denver and they can have a 2 week delay while they order parts.

The unit folds nicely and fits in the back of a small SUV. At 100+ lbs its a little heavy to horse round routinely. The tool compartment is OK for storing connectors and adapters but not much else. You need access to all 6 sides of the compressor unless you don't use the handles.

Th version I got is loud but quieter than most compressors with similar CFM delivery (6 cfm @ 90 psi). Plenty to drive most air tools other then the large industrial type (will not come close to driving my 1" impact wrench, 10cfm@100psi).

Overall a excellent unit for the money. Yes there are better compressors but not close for the money.

Foldit Marine Utility CartFoldit Marine Utility Cart
Rated 4 Stars"Very good cart with some really stiff parts." 2009-08-10
Tip the wheels come with tires deflated, inflate them before installing the wheels unless you have a compressor handy.

The release for the handles (to unfold) is very stiff on my sample and can't be released by hand; hopefully it will loosen up with use. Similarly the release to fold the cart. Folded the cart has a lot of windage making it difficult to fix on a car top carrier and inadvisable to strap to the life lines on boat. Overall a very good cart.

BTW the narrow wheels will sink into soft sand or soil (hardly a big surprise though). Works just fine on any reasonable surface.

Would have given it a 5 except for the sticky releases and the cost. There is a high premium for the foldability.

Rated 4 Stars"Intended to convert a drill to a hex driver 4 1/2 stars" 2009-06-20
The quick change chuck does a great job of converting a drill to a hex driver like the PS20. All the bits work find in any of the hex drivers; PS20, I-Driver etc.

Some of the bits are less than real useful for me particularly the ones aimed at socket usage. The drills have a hex drive adapter that is swedged on, unlike some of the others (Snappy for instance) which allow replacement of the bit by just loosening a set screw.

The hard case is well designed except that it is intended primarily for the very short wire detent bits that really need a magnetic holder.

Rated 4 Stars"Seems to be pretty accurate and convenient" 2009-06-17
I normally take my BP with a Spigomanometer (BP Cuff) and stethoscope. But if my allergies are very bad (a lot this year as we are having cool very wet spring and early summer--isn't global warming terrible?) and I have a problem with the cuff when my arthritis flares up; I thought this might be usable as a substitute.

It works very well and jibes within 2 to 6 psi of my readings using the manual cuff. So far so good. I will add comments if I find that the readings are getting off.

I like the memory and overall the materials and construction is good. Looking at the complaints in some cases it is obvious that the folks don't have a clue on how to use a BP cuff; but others seem to indicate at least a calibration problem (so its always 10 points high just subtract 10).

I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND that any one using a home BP monitor either get their doctors office to cross check it periodically or learn how to do a manual BP. The latter is by far preferable! Most rescue squads will be willing to teach you how to do a manual BP and so should your doctors office. If you know someone on the National Ski Patrol they can teach you as well and most guides are qualified in Outdoor Emergence Care and can also do so.

BTW I was unable to test the irregular heart beat function.

While I find the memory in the gadget quite useful I don't see much of any use for the software particularly given the problems reported with it. Basically that's the one star reduction. I think that I can hack my Linux system to read their USB data and I have a standard medical statistical heart/BP monitor program for that.

Rated 4 Stars"Pretty good but not great" 2009-06-17
The pockets are a little too narrow for many things but the gadget is very well made and durable. There are the two side loops that can be used for a screwdriver (guy on the site "do they still make those...?") or pencil. with storage for a little bit larger stuff it would be perfect as it is its very useful. No problems with anything falling out.

Has a nice metal clip that fits snugly even over a 4" belt so it doesn't come off when you sit down.

DEWALT D5120 Ballistic Nylon Universal Drill HolderDEWALT D5120 Ballistic Nylon Universal Drill Holder
Rated 4 Stars"very good holster for a medium to large drill" 2009-06-17
This holster works well for a mid sized to large drill. I would not use it for a drill/driver smaller than theBosch PS20-2A 12-Volt Max Lithium-Ion Pocket Driver with 2 Batteries and while it will hold a large drill/driver like the Bosch 17618-01 18-Volt 1/2-Inch Brute Tough Litheon Hammer Drill/Driver with 2 Fat Batteriesyou can not leave the side handle attached which pretty much makes it unusable for the small hammer drills. I had no problems with a bit hitting my leg and the hold down strap is convenient and is held out of the way by Velcro. Over all a very good design.

Quality is excellent and durability should be outstanding. The four bit holders are OK for medium drill or driver bits but not for large or small and they could be more generous with the storage on this holster.

If you use this for a drill or driver of the size it is intended for you need a 3 to 4" wide heavy belt (well Duh) preferably a suspenders rig. It will work easily right or left handed but is better cross draw.

What I missed in the picture is that the belt loop is a good 6" wide and can't be used with many kinds of utility pants without skipping belt loops. As I use "tradesman's" pants this makes the holster of very limited use for me. But one of the other guys is talking a trade.

Rated 5 Stars"really usefull gadget" 2009-06-06
I had only used the older labelers and this is actually a pleasure to use. I find it kind of counterintuitive some of the time but over all easy to use. For instance the chain function only affects the cutting of the labels not the print or format. I haven't tried the PC SW and interface but it looks rather like overkill for my projects.

Easier to use, much more flexible, and way more uses that I expected. (I am doing a deck replacement remodel and needed a way to track screws and small parts.)

Rated 3 Stars"3 1/2 stars" 2009-04-11
The characters are well drawn, but there are too many inconsequential sub plots and too many spear carriers. The plot is rather incidental but decent. Overall a very good read and fun.

The cover is horrid and has nothing to do with the book at all and there is no where is Western Washington with that landscape. Apparently this is a new cover not an improvement on the previous design though.

The dream pillow looks to be good although not the same as mine. BTW do not substitute foam for cotton batting! The pillow depends on sent and foam will trap it.

Rated 2 Stars"About average or a 5W solor unit with a small battery" 2009-04-02
This has garnered a lot of very negative reviews partly due to unrealistic expectations and mostly because of bad product description.

It seems that a lot of the reviewers really expected to get the equivalent off a Sunforce 50044 60-Watt Solar Charging Kit along with a Xantrex Technologies 802-1500 XPower Powerpack 1,500-Watt Portable Backup Power System. This is unrealistic to the point of silliness.

Unfortunately the product description is misleading to the point of bordering on fraud. There is no mention that the 10 AMP hour battery takes 45 to 50 hours to recharge at 5 watts and that the AC charger is only about 10W and disables all the outputs but takes 20+ hours to charge the battery. Because the system shuts of at 40% the 10AH battery is really about 6AH and that should be mentioned in the product description as should the rather unreasonable requirement to charge for 48 hours before initial use.

As a 5W solar unit with a battery and nice status readouts its OK but the low amperage AC charger is a big drawback particularly as it can't be used with the outputs active. The AC power out is very dirty square wave and even the $40 inverter from Sam's produces much better quality (at 1000 watts) although still dirty. Can only be used for Laptops or other devices that have a hearty AC/DC power supply or are very tolerant of dirty power. Not a bad buy but given the overall capacities should either allow simultaneous use of the AC charger, produce better quality AC power out or be considerably cheaper. It works OK for what I bought it for which is recharging a laptop which is rather a power hog and cell phones. But I don't particularly recommend it.

BTW the packaging is nice you use a tab to release the top and once hats open the package splits into halves so you don't have to lift it out.

A bit too agressive for softwoods and many plastics. Clogs easily on softer materials and is difficult to clean. Great for fiberglass and PC boards and hard woods though.

Rated 4 Stars"God tool but accessories suck" 2009-03-12
The tool its self is nic and works well with plenty of torque. Not really for very fine work or engraving the Scribe is for that. But very good for removing material for detail work and for cleaning stuff.

The Accessory tools are pretty useless. They are almost all sanding or polishing tools and there is only one general purpose cutter a drill bit and a fiberglass cutoff wheel. So they are generally useless for wood working, hard materials or metal.

Expect to spend several hundred dollars on additional tools no matter what you work with unless you only do sanding and polishing.

Rated 4 Stars"Very good if you have a major Japanese market close" 2009-01-14
The recipes are clearly written and easy to follow and produce good to excellent results--the few I have tried. The supplemental recipes on how to use the pickles are welcome and interesting.

Overall an excellent book. But only if you have a source for the materials at hand. Although exotic gear, techniques, and long times are not required.

The Free BardsThe Free Bards
Rated 4 Stars"3 excellant stored collected" 2008-12-27
These 3 stories from the Free Bards series are an excellent introduction the first The Lark & The Wren deals with how Rune decided to become a musician and leave her dead end village. The Robin & The Kestrel deals with the adventures of Robin a Gipsy Free Bard and Johnny a curios anomaly. The last The Eagle & The Nightingales deals with a Free Bard singer and her entanglement with some of the non-humans and court politics.

The characters are all well done and compelling and the plots are very good although not truly great. The stories were edited when the collection was done with resulting improvements by and large. But there are a number of editorial rough spots both original and new which keep this book from getting 5 stars.

The cover here is not horrid contrary to recent tradition, actually its pretty good. Goes to show that Baen doesn't have a requirement for bad covers.

Overall an Excellent though not outstanding read (5 stars is Outstanding for the genre).

Lord DarcyLord Darcy
Rated 5 Stars"Great collection of supernateral detective stories" 2008-06-03
These stories star Lord Darcy and his sourer side kick Sean. The alternate universe is one where the Plantagets kept rule of England and the Empire into the 60s. The laws of magic were discovered early (contagion--things in contact remain in contact) are prevalent. Lots of allusions and puns: for instance the head of the sourcer's guild is Sir Lyons Grandalopuhs Gray, and the Too Many magicians is something of a send up of the Before Midnight: A Nero Wolfe Mystery (Mystery Masters Series) mysteries are still popular and I highly recommend them. A very good attempt to apply the codified laws of magick to an imaginary world and an excellent series of deceive stories. Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe is paralleled by the Marquis of London and while Nero Wolfe's side kick is Archie Goodwin the Marquis' is Lord Bontriomphe. In another story a man is killed and the Kaplin-Sheinwold (bridge writers) test shows that a short club (bridge convention) could not have been used.

Overall a great read with compelling well done characters, excellent plots and nice sometimes sly humor.

The End of Time: The Next Revolution in PhysicsThe End of Time: The Next Revolution in Physics
Rated 4 Stars"An interesting way to deal with time asymetery" 2008-01-03
I find many of the reviews useful and well considered but there are a number where it is obvious that the reviewer either didn't read the book or didn't understand it.

Today there are two major schools of physics; quantum theory and relativity. In quantum mechanics space and time must exist on their own. One example is the neutrino. In the standard model (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_model) there are the electron, muon and tau neutrinos. For years physicists have tried to study the sun by the neutrinos it emits but there were way fewer than predicted. Last year that problem finally got resolved by the discovery that neutrinos act much more like waves than expected. They change from electron to muon to tau depending on the phase of the wave instead of staying electron as theory predicted. To do this space and time must exist separate from the neutrinos.

In General Relativity time and space dimensions only exist as metrics--that is to the extent that they measure relationships between things; be the things sub atomic particles or galaxies. They have no independent existence.

This dichotomy is why when physicists try to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity they come with silliness like particles traveling backward in time from the edge of the universe. (This to try to reconcile Stephen Hawking's application of quantum mechanics to black holes and finding that they radiate mass to eliminate spin and to decrease their mass.)

The author takes on the one real remaining problem with time and that is time asymmetry. IMHO the explanation he gives is a valid one although conceptually difficult and not again IMHO complete. I could wish that Feynman had addressed the topic as he had a excellent talent for getting complex concepts across. But he refused to have his views on time attributed to him or have them published. Considering the beating Fred Hoyle took over "Symmetric Electrodynamics in Arrow of time Cosmology" he was probably right.

Overall this is an interesting book and a good read although hard going conceptually. Luckily the math is simple trig.

This is the follow on to Carrie's Story: An Erotic S/M Novel where Carrie becomes Johan's slave and is sold to a very wealthy Greek. The characters are well done and there is some humor as well. Kudos to the author for an inovative use of an egg whisk (BTW it does work). The erotic scenes are well writern and have some inovation.

The plot ending is a little Story of O meiche meiche but better written. Excellent erotic writing.

Rated 5 Stars"Truly excellent story and characters, excellent plot" 2007-08-31
If you have problems with gay or lesbian issues you will probably not like this book. No its not preachy but has gay and lesbians who are treated sympathetically

Having said that this is one of the better books I have read with several intertwined plots, good humor, parody and sarcasm.

The gumshoe is Drew a gay who is looking for Jen his Wicca partner (gone missing on a mysterious case). This is one or maybe two plot threads. Not to mention Drew searching for his Totem (nice bit of humor) when he finds that he is a seer.

CALERANT an eccentric artist who is crazy like a fox. He is either the hero or antihero of the piece and at least intelligent.

The senator who is the villain.

Weir a popular religious singer who doesn't really get along with the senator's beliefs.

Benji and his Baptist friends; Summer (the Wiccan girlfriend) and her mother Holly, and the Wicca coven.

Ice-in Summer (AKA Grandma) a shaman who paints the Cherokee lawyers and blesses them before they go into court. And who worries that the totems are watching TV and choosing their own forms and attributes from that.

These plots are well interwoven and thought out and the characters well done and compelling. The characters and humor are exceptional. The romance is nicely written particularly the kids.

Lots of interesting humor I like the fast food places the Rush-in and Chez-out. Some good futurest as TV is downloaded on demand and you can select the ratings for the cut that you want. E.g. max violence and sex, fem dom and sub men, etc.

But I can't figure out what genre this is: not standard or close to paranormal detective story (takes place in the future with more magic than now); definitely not science fiction; more social interaction, but still not a clear genre. Nonetheless a really exceptional read. I bought this some years ago and just found it when cleaning out some old books. I am very sorry that I didn't read it before now.

This is a reissue of the long out of print second book in the series. I hope that this reissue does not mark the end of the series.

Garrett is hired by a storm warden's secretary (the storm warden is a powerful sorceress) to advise her on ransoming the storm warden's son before she gets back from the war. But the whole thing seems rather fishy from the get go as you would normally hire someone like Garrett for the whole operation not just for some advice and appearances. This is where the plot gets involved and interesting with various bad guys trying to out smart each other. Good characters some humor and a very good plot overall. The one rough spot is what happens to the ransom. We are talking about a total of 8,000 lbs of gold here and that doesn't get moved fast or easily without a crew or magic.

Overall an outstanding read though.
BTW I notice that there are none of the editorial flaws that seem to be cropping up in books recently.

Holt is sort of a genre of his own. His stories are always: entertaining, original,

Obviously somewhat inspired by Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Sorcerer".

Rated 4 Stars"Outstanding for the erotic suspense/thriller genre" 2007-01-08
This book is kind of Sax Rommer (a 1913 through 1930s British author known for his lurid plots and extravagant villain the Insidious Dr. Fu Manchu) meets Angela Knight. Margot is on the run from a psychopathic serial killer (she thinks of him as snaky) who has murdered her boy friend and his assistant and the killer's handler Marcus. The plot is convoluted and lured and gets interesting when she meets Davy a martial arts instructor who is starting up a security consulting business on the side. They are mutually attracted and Davy helps her out with what they think of a a stalker problem. Their relationship is rocky as Davy is a control freak who can't commit himself. There are lots of good well written erotic scenes and the characters are much more convincing than those in Return To Me; showing the authors development as a story teller. Not as good as Hot Night but a very god read and worth the time. The author does seem to be stuck on the psychotic killer menaces the heroine theme.

Return to MeReturn to Me
Rated 3 Stars"A much better than average book in the erotic suspense genre" 2007-01-07
This book is similar to Hot Night and Jaid Black's One Dark Night in that the villain is a psychotic sociopath. Simon is a photojournalist who is convinced that he brings disasters with him where ever he goes and a child hood lover of El who is very beautiful and engaged to the son of wealthy socialites; Brad but the engagement is in trouble because they thought she owned the mansion her bead and breakfast is in when she paid her mother for it and owes the bank big time. The problems are compounded by Brads overbearing ways and his bitch of a mother. The plot is OK but not nearly as well done as Hot Night and Simon's inability to commit to EL is not convincing. The characters are alright and the sex scenes well written with a little Ds (Simon and El both switch roles).

Flawed but not horrid and a decent read.
