![]() | "Get rid of Candida and learn some new things" | 2009-02-19 |
| My spouse and I used Brenda Watson's products and information years ago before this book came out. We both had horrible systemic Candida infections with skin rash. I also had a co-morbid black mold ear infection, and the doctor tried to give me antibiotics for it! In my experience, antibiotics do nothing for mold/Candida except encourage more of it. After years of not knowing what was wrong with us, and me gaining 40 lbs, we both followed Watson's advice. We got rid of the infections and I lost the weight. I was very happy to see this book come out, and I picked it up from the library. I learned new things such as how TMG and L-Methionine make SAMe, and applied that info to my supplement regimen. The book is recommended for anyone who suspects Candida/mold/yeast infections or is carb-sensitive. Doctors would have happier patients if they quit laughing at Candida problems and carb-sensitive people. | ||
| Chakra Yoga: A Complete Exercise Program for Balancing the Body's Energy Centers | ||
![]() | "Chakras? Kundalini? Where?" | 2008-08-23 |
| As someone who's had prior exposure to Kundalini yoga through hands-on classes, and has been studying/working with chakra energy for years, I can safely say this DVD will leave a beginner clueless. The exercises are basic hodge podge movements with no explanation of their origins. I've learned more off of YouTube than viewing this DVD. Things lacking: a) Lack of Kundalini instruction and explanation. Not even a simple mention of serpent-coiled energy. b) Lack of clear instruction of our chakras and their purpose. Just mentions "clearing your brain," or letting out "bottled energy." No mention of specific chakras, their effects on the body, associations, etc. c) Terrible video editing - really funny they show you a snazzy cover with Gurutej on the beach, but in reality you're in the corner of somebody's house, and you can see the cars whizzing by outside. The entire video looks like a high school project. I like Joan Price's review that states, "Then, chakra by chakra, she explains and demonstrates." Where? Did Joan even watch the DVD? Maybe she watched a different one than I did. Bottomline: Looking to be a serious student of Kundalini and chakra energy work? Look elsewhere. Looking to spend an hour doing feel good exercises. Here ya go. | ||

| The Crafter's Complete Guide to Collage | ||
![]() | "Great introduction to the world of mixed-media" | 2008-02-26 |
| I've been wanting to get serious about mixed-media. No scrapbooking. No journals. No trading cards. I'm talking about 5 foot wall pieces hanging on plywood. Mixed-media on my ceiling. Items that can be hung in a gallery. After looking through several "collage" books, which were really just personal journal books in a "how-to" disguise, I was frustrated and then found this. Explaining everything from supports, to tools and materials, this is an essential book for other artists venturing into mixed-media. As well, I read this along with Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Art Materials by Ian Sidaway, and came away knowing a lot more than I ever did, and I have a background in acrylic painting. I gave it 4 stars because some of the material was redundant and the pictures didn't match the text, but this was few and far between. Bottom-line: Serious potential collage and mixed-media artists start here. | ||

![]() | "Fun at first - last episode boring" | 2007-09-11 |
| The first 3 episodes are pretty interesting and use a combination of animation and strange setups to make the points vivid and entertaining. There were demonstrations of the principles using things I had never seen before such as Indian laughter groups and the 1:1.618 golden ratio (ok I saw this in PI, but didn't know really how it connected to perfect beauty, and I had never studied otherwise).
(SPOILER - next paragraph) In one part, a white woman who was raped by a black man helps to wrongly convict an innocent man for ELEVEN years and the worst thing about how she feels is EMBARRASSED? Wow! If I was responsible for something like that I would be devastated at taking away a part of someone's life. They used this to show how we can easily mistake faces and how we tend to lump other races into a prototype. The point was a good point, but a better example of a more regretful person would have been more poignant. The last episode "Fame" was a big drag. There were some fun moments such as Cleese visiting his usual produce store, but a large part of the show was taken up by who this casting director was going pick. Where was the science for this episode? It was more like an expose in why some people are addicted to celebrities, and a reality TV contest. Ugh. I would say watch it for the first 3 episodes and have fun with it, but don't expect this entire show to be a documentary into how our faces work, and don't expect it to be scientific. | ||

![]() | "This book made a huge difference" | 2007-08-06 |
| Dr. Starlanyl was way ahead of her time when she wrote this book. I actually read this in 2006 after 4 months of extremely painful and useless chiropractic "treatments." Frustrated and in severe pain, I picked up this book and learned a few things I didn't already know. The main one being the difference between Myofascial Pain Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Syndrome. Trigger point therapy (TPT) is used to treat MPS and my FMS exacerbates the MPS. But now I had found a new treatment that actually allowed me to move again. Before TPT: Vacuuming would leave me in a knotted mess with severe low back pain and full-blown FMS flare. After TPT: Now when vacuuming pretty much feel only the exhaustion of FMS and a slight tension. And this has lasted a year! I am so thankful. Definitely give this book a read and her other book. Check out my reviews for other helpful FMS books. | ||
| The Book of Metal: The Most Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Metal Music Ever Created | ||
![]() | "Krahp" | 2007-06-26 |
| I thumbed through this in a bookstore. Garbage. If you want a metal book probably the best I've seen (and own) are Sound of the Beast for generalized sutff, and Lords of Chaos for BM. Honestly, I've never come across a perfect or "comprehensive, definitive guide" that these metal encyclopedia books claim. But this one is one of the worst. As other reviewers pointed out the author seems to have no idea what metal actually is. Blink 182? Errrr right..... next. | ||

![]() | "I'm sorry..." | 2007-04-01 |
| but I can't agree with the others. This documentary started strong with the history and reenactments. Then went off into boring tangents like "modern celts" with scenes of people dancing in clubs and the like. The narrator is boring often talking endlessly, standing on some historical spot. I was waiting for Monty Python to come running through at any moment with a gag. I had to stop the dvd half way through out of sheer boredom. I would have loved to have seen more engrossing history, more reenactments, and less long-winded dry speeches in which I didn't learn much of anything. | ||

![]() | "Superb and moving" | 2007-03-30 |
| I won't go into as much detail as others have, but I will say that as an armchair science lover, I was moved by this documentary. It was fascinating to see the level of dedication these people have, and I am amazed that the mission is still ongoing! The animations were superb and told the story very well. I don't think scientists get enough credit and attention. Everyone should see this. | ||
| Eyewitness: Viking | ||
![]() | "Pictoral Wonders" | 2007-03-16 |
| You can't find this many pictures in a single book about Vikings for adults that I'm aware. Believe me I've looked. I also appreciate the fact that the book is historically accurate, such as explaining that the horned helmets are myth. I recommend this to both adults and children (I'm 28). | ||
| The Edge on the Sword | ||
![]() | "Great fun" | 2007-03-05 |
| First of all this is a teen book and I'm 28. That being said, I loved the book. For advanced readers it's a fast read, but thouroughly enjoyable. I could picture the places the author was describing and picture Æthelflæd easily. With so few historical fiction novels being directed toward great women, this was a welcome read, and the author stayed true to the history of the time. | ||
| The Wandering Womb : A Cultural History of Outrageous Beliefs About Woman | ||
![]() | "You must know the past to understand the present" | 2006-12-08 |
| I highly recommend this book to both sexes, especially medical students. There are many doctors today (both men and women) who still treat and diagnose women as overemotional dogs. Our symptoms are sloughed off as being "emotional," "hysterical," or "depressed." Yet we have come a long way, and still have further to go. To learn that female genital mutilation was practiced in the USA within the past 1.5 centuries is shocking, let alone the horrific treatments of women in asylums. The classifications of symptoms were so broad as to allow anyone wishing to dispose of a woman in an asylum, an easy way to do so. These beliefs lie in the Judeo-Christian concepts found in the Bible. Interestingly enough you will find additions to the Bible in King James (hence the King James "translation") time that had to do with the oppression and execution of women. Jesus never taught these things, so they are obviously works by the evil men in the church of that day to subjegate women. Any person reading this book will find it eye-opening and should be outraged that humans were allowed to suffer so much for idiocy, ignorance, fear, and power. | ||

![]() | "Excellent Resource" | 2006-10-20 |
| I've had FMS for over 7 years and have read a lot of books and material. Even though it is an older book, it was way ahead of its time. It's a lot of information to digest, and gets into some specifics about different things. I thing it's an excellent compliment to any fibromyalgics library. | ||

![]() | "A must-have manual for those who are ill" | 2006-08-24 |
| This book should be a manual given to anyone who is facing a chronic illness. Even if you are like me and an experienced veteran of researching their illness, how to be healthier, and how the body system works, I guarantee you'll find many useful bits of info in this book. Such as soaking grains and legumes to remove phytates. I appreciate that the author also supports their writing with studies and a reference section. The information is so well-rounded that it gives the reader an opportunity to try different approaches or consider things they mave have never thought of that are making or contributing to them getting sick. I borrowed from the library but will definitely be buying a copy for my own reference. | ||
| Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra Clumping Cat Litter (18-lb bag) | ||
![]() | "The Best!!!!" | 2006-06-04 |
| I literally have tried nearly every brand and definitely every style of litter. I have spent money on expensive premium brands, and tried generic bulk brands such as Superpetz litter. I've tried regular clay, newspaper, corn, wheat, pine, etc... This litter blows everything else out of the water. I used to have to buy two boxes of Arm & Hammer litter "odor control" at every change. The stuff is so strong smelling and nauseating but it was the only thing that would contain the scent. I have a very strong sense of smell and smell things other people cannot. I have 6 cats, 2 non-mechanical litter boxes and a grid mat. This litter TRULY is dust-free. I purposely raked it around agressively to try and make it dusty, but much to my happiness it did not. I was sick and missed a day of cleaning (I clean the box religiously once sometimes twice a day). It still did not smell. Even when I accidently break a urine clump open, I get but the faintest of an odor. That's another good point, these clumps truly clump. There is some tracking but nothing like it used to be. I give the tracking 4 stars by itself, the whole package I give a 5. All-in-all I am now a dedicated customer of Dr. Elsey's litter. I bought from PetFoodDirect here on Amazon but the shipping is outrageous. According to Dr. Elsey's website, it is carried at PetSmart. I'll have to go take a look. Other than the shipping the pricing is excellent for the value of the litter and the size of the bag. Please try this litter even if you think your are satisfied with your current litter. You won't know what you are missing until you do! PS - If you are looking for more odor control, please consider switching your cat's food to a holistic brand such as Artemis or Bench & Field. They include herbs that control odor by up to 30%. Nevermind the fact that it is much healthier for your companion. | ||

![]() | "World's Worst Cat Litter" | 2006-05-23 |
| Absolute garbage. I tried this awhile ago and was horribly disappointed. It doesn't even deserve one star. Why? First of all the clumps are not clumps, they are sticky piles of goo, and the smell is awful. I pride myself on having a home with 6 cats and NO odors. I thought I'd try this litter to be more environmentally conscious. I had to dump out the 2 litter boxes after a few days and go back and get my usual because it rank of ammonia. Try it if you want but don't say I didn't warn you. If you want the most superb litter in the world, get Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra Clumping Cat Litter. I've tried numerous styles and brands and it really is the best for multi-cat households. | ||

![]() | "The little vacuum that couldn't" | 2005-07-04 |
| I have had this vacuum over a year now, and I hate it. One of the first things I noticed was that the motor wasn't powerful enough to keep the roller spinning over carpet. The roller stops if the carpet level changes any. Within the first month the roller broke and I paid $17 to replaced it. It still gets caught on carpet. Not only that but it doesn't fully sweep in a track. By that I mean you can see the lines where it misses. You have to go over, and over, and over to get everything up. It's also very heavy. The tubes are way too short and the hose pops off all the time. The filters get clogged awfully fast and I have to wash them every 5 vacuumings. The suction spits kitty litter out the back. It's loud and noisy. The cord is too short. The whirlwind action in the receptacle cup doesn't work and dirt flies up into the filter clogging it. Just the other day the carpet height level mechanism completely broke off!! I just simply despise this vacuum. | ||
