Sony SA-W2500 Performance Line 150 Watt Subwoofer - BlackSony SA-W2500 Performance Line 150 Watt Subwoofer - Black
Rated 3 Stars"Okay - depending on your needs" 2009-08-28
This sub gets a lot of good reviews, and a sub-$100 price point is highly attractive. But I found it to be little more than a "rumble box" - great for movies, not so great for music. Movie effects - trains, thunder, explosions - rock the room with this box. But it's just not tight enough for my musical tastes (boomy and quite muddy - not very clear tones).

Plus the back side of this thing is a plastic casing that protrudes a couple inches and contains all sorts of vents top, bottom and back. Not only did I envision a whole lot of dog hair collecting in it, when I isolated the sub (disconnected all other speakers) to tune it I discovered the plastic casing had a rattle. Others have reported this too. It's not really noticeable when everything else is hooked up, but still - a rattle is just not something I want in a sub, much less a brand new one.

Do yourself a favor - unless you're looking for a cheap "rumble box" for your home theatre system or something to kick around the dorm room, spend more on a sub. I ended up returning this and picking up a Polk PSW-110 for under $250. It has more power, much tighter tone, a fully enclosed cabinet (no venting, no plastic), better hookups, a much better warranty (5 years as opposed to Sony's 1) and looks absolutely awesome. The Sony on the other hand looks pretty cheap. Especially with that plastic back. The difference really was night & day.

This is a great sub. Great with both movies (BOOM!) and music (tight). But you have to dial it in! Take some time, read your receiver and speaker manuals, do your homework. It has to be adjusted for your system. Also give it a week or so to break in - many have reported this sub becomes bassier and more responsive with a little time. I paired this with a set of Polk TSi300 towers and couldn't be happier with the result. Looks awesome too - very well designed.

Great short teachings, short stories.

But read Master Seung Sahn's "Compass of Zen" first.

Colorado Flora: Eastern SlopeColorado Flora: Eastern Slope
Rated 5 Stars"Comprehensive" 2007-08-27
Brilliant guide. This is the one I turn to when all others have failed. No photos. Does have a lot of line drawings of species. But if this book is to be of any value to you, you have to learn to read the botanical keys. Best field guide for Colorado flora Eastern Slope though (flora meaning vegetation - you'll find a lot more than wildflowers in this book). Take note that there is a Western Slope version too.

Why WhY WHY do companies always discontinue their bombproof, proven and reliable products in favor of the latest, greatest and inherantly buggy? Stupid move, Creative. This player is phenomonal. The Zen Stone Plus - it's presumed replacement - isn't even close. Sigh.

Beginners read this book. Masters read this book. Worth its weight in gold. And yet it's no big deal. :0)

Are there problems with the Endangered Species Act? Of course. Is the government guilty of using heavy-handed tactics? Of course. But the answers are not going to be found in Richard Pombo's "me first" world either. This book contributes NOTHING to the sensible community debate. Swing back towards the center, Richard. For the sake of all beings, swing back to the center.

Cstar 8x20 Monocular Silver Spy ScopeCstar 8x20 Monocular Silver Spy Scope
Rated 5 Stars"Surprisingly Good" 2005-06-23
I received this monocular by mistake (from another dealer). I had ordered the ATN Golden Eye, and received the ATN Silver Spy (which happens to be the exact same as the Cstar) instead.

Obviously, neither company manufactures this product. It is a bulk purchase, custom imprinted item (i.e. promotional product). Hence why two companies are selling the exact same product.

But it is surprisingly good! The optics are fully coated, the view crisp and bright (believe it or not, it's as crisp as my $300 Bausch & Lomb Binoculars). Monocular also comes with a small soft case and lens cloth. Not bad for under $25.00!

Handbook of Rocky Mountain PlantsHandbook of Rocky Mountain Plants
Rated 5 Stars"Best in Class" 2005-06-07
Get it if you can find it. Nelson's classic is one of the best, most thorough field guides to Rocky Mountain Plants - flowers, trees, shrubs, grasses - ever written.

I own about 10 different botanical field guides, but Nelson's is the one I always turn to when I need to verify a find. Spectacular reference work.

Plants of the Gods: Their Sacred, Healing and Hallucinogenic PowersPlants of the Gods: Their Sacred, Healing and Hallucinogenic Powers
Rated 5 Stars"Spectacular Reference" 2005-05-27
Excellent reference for the serious student. No, this isn't a manual of how to get high from plants in your backyard, nor should it ever be treated as such. Pick the wrong plant and you might well die. Excellent ethnobotanical, anthropological historical and chemical information combined with superb photography of plant species, cultural use and both historic and modern artwork.

The study of ethnobotany and entheogens deserves much more attention than it gets. These are not drugs. They are vital, important and sacred plants that command our respect.

Sensational resource on lichens, and the science of lichenology. Absolutely, unequivocally worth every penny. The best book in the field.

The Prayer of Jabez: Breaking Through to the Blessed LifeThe Prayer of Jabez: Breaking Through to the Blessed Life

A perfect book for our instant gratification society. Populist bubble gum theology at it's best. Say the prayer - get a free gift! Sadly, I don't believe that this was Wilkinson's intention at all, and I do believe that there are many good insights to be found in this book. Too bad it has been co-opted and ruined by the "God's lottery, propserity preaching, say it and God'll pay it, name it and claim it" crowd of self-serving, self-seeking "believers" that seem to be in such abundance these days.

The Adobe Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter)The Adobe Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter)
Rated 5 Stars"Brilliant!" 2004-01-10
Perhaps the best Photoshop book for digital photographers on the market. If you are looking for a book that goes into the technical science of color management or delves in the algorithms behind curves and levels then this isn't it.

What it is is a collection of (brilliant) how to's for digital photo management and correction - what to do when your fill flash was too bright, How to recover an underexposed image. How to turn a snapshot into a poster sized print with mininal loss of detail. The absolute best ways to get maximum sharpness without experiencing color halos and image degradation. How to prepare flesh tones for a CMYK press. Matching color and tone throughout a series of images. Etc.

You can even download the example images in the book, try the techniques out and compare your results to Scott's. If you are a digital photographer who would rather spend more time in the field shooting and less at a computer endlessly tweaking curves and levels and you are looking for a book of down and dirty tips, tricks and how to secrets of the pros then this is it.

Way to go, Scott!
