| Just got this lens today and took several pictures. The autofocus on this lens is really fast and it takes great pictures. The IS works perfectly fine! I will be using this lens more often than the 18-55mm lens kit and the 55-2500mm IS. You have to have this lens. It performs very well (I wonder if I got the 1.4. That must be super fast) and a good bang for the buck! Don't read anymore reviews or research other 50mm lens. If you are on a tight budget but want something that is almost perfect 50mm lens, this is it! | ||

| I bought a Nikon D40 three months ago and returned it. Don't get me wrong, the Nikon D40's imaga quality is exceptional but the AF is a miss. I returned it and got the Canon XSI. The Auto focus was still a miss and I kept getting a "busy" error message even on broad daylight! So I returned it again and finally got the T1i, and am glad I did. This camera's autofocus is pretty fast and, for some reasons, the OS works well on this camera although the XSI has the same lens. The pictures are clear, crisp, and vivid; however, I still think that the Nikon D40 has the best image quality of all three.
This camera is very easy to use, just like the XSI, but this one has faster Autofocus and it works 99% of the time. I don't care much about the video as I do not use it often. Also, the LCD is very bright, and you can actually view it in direct sunlight! Also, Canon lenses are affordable than Nikon's, and there are so wide selection of canon lenses. In the end, Nikon's IQ is exemplary, and Canon is second. Of course, this is only my non-professional opinion and it is only based on the kit lenses that came with the cameras. I don't think you will ever go wrong with either brand.

| I wanted to love this camera so much. It takes great pictures and the colors are vivid WHEN THE AUTOFOCUS work properly. I would get 6 shot of unfocused pictures out of 10. I tried all the settings (Manual, P, ATV, AV, A-DEP) and the results are the same. One would think that by setting the camera to AUTO MODE you would at least get consistent good pictures but it's not the case. Also, there is this BUSY indicator which appears for no valid technical reason. I was taking picture of the San Francisco BAY at around 4:30 pm. It was slightly cloudy and the sun was just peeking through the clouds. I set up the ISO to 200, shutter speed to 1/1250 (I was also focusing on the small waves and that's why I went for the faster shutter speed) and sometimes to 1/50 , wb to daylight, and also cloudy. There were a several shots where I got the BUSY indicator when I didn't even use the flash. The BUSY indicator delays your shooting significantly, and it performs like a P&S camera.
I have P&S digital cameras (sony, panasonic, and Canon) and their autofocus are dead on.. no problem whatsover. For a DSLR, although entry level, one would assume that the autofocus will be accurate on automode. I am dissappointed with this camera. I think canon cameras are great unfortunately, I probably got a defective one. I also ordered the Nikon D40 last month. It was a great camera but focusing was bad as well. It is just frustrating. By the way, I have very steady hands so camera shake is not an issue. I hope Canon will fix this problem soon, or at least during production so it will be fixed when the camera is out for sale.

| I got my D40 last Friday and took many shots. Some of the Image Quality is superb unfortunately it is not consistent. The autofocus don't seem to work. I get about 5 great pictures, out of ten. I don't know if it is just me because this is my first DSLR camera but I have tried all the manual settings as well as auto mode but I still get bad pictures. I zoomed to the 55mm max and the image quality is just poor. I am really disappointed because I know that the D40 is a superb entry level DSLR. I really think the lens is defective. The auto focus works most of the time but not all the time. It is really hard to manually focus on this lens especially on Macro and max zoom. I wll return this to amazon and exchange it for the Canon EOS Rebel XS. | ||

| I have had this camera for two days and have experimented with it by taking over 250 pictures using both automatic and manual setting. I read on CNET review that this camera's photo quality is not that great. That is half true. The picture will not turn out sharp and clear if you always use automatic settings; however, manual mode with the correct settings will result in dslr-like photo quality. You really have to manually adjust the settings if you want to have good quality pics. If you don't know what you're doing, I suggest you stick with the auto mode.
Pros: 1.above average shutter lag but definitely faster than the compact and ultra compact P&S digicams 2.Manual settings is a big plus 3. Zoom can be extended up to 32x when shooting on 5 megapixel 4. Optical Stabilization works very well 5. Flash is extremely powerful. You can take pictures in VERY LOW LIGHT situations, and produce a bright crisp pics 6. 10 fps burst mode. There are options for 2, 3, and 5 FPS 7. Anti-blur is superb 8. Clear and crisp pictures when maxing out the zoom 9. Very light and portable 10. Good grip and excellent lens Cons: 1. Macro is below average. My Panasonic tz3 and Sony T200 takes much better pics on macro mode 2. Lens cap is flimsy 3. Automatic ISO mode does not alway take good pictures 4. You have to wait for 16 seocnds to take another shot when using the 10 fps burst mode 5. LCD screen do not completely swivel 6. It doesn't do my laundry I have not tested the HD video so I can't comment on it. Also, I am very much aware that this is not a dslr so I will not complain that it doesn't take good pictures like the DSLR'r or as fast. To do so would be idiotic, stupid, and ignorant. CONCLUSION: Get this camera if you know how to use the manual mode with the proper settings. You will be guaranteed to have excellent pictures. Stay away from this camera if you would only use the automatic mode as it would be such a waste of your hard earned money. I highly recommend Canon, Sony T series, and the newer Panasonic models for the photography-challenged. For the intermediate to advanced photography enthusiasts, this is an excellent second camera. It is light, portable, and have so many manual settings which would allow you to create amazing photo quality
