Romancing the Stone [Blu-ray]Romancing the Stone [Blu-ray]
Rated 5 Stars"Look at those snappers" 2008-11-01
As the story starts we are treated to a realistic western and look back at the cover to be sure we have the correct DVD. Yep it is the correct one.

A romance novelist, Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner of "Body Heat" 1981 fame) wants to fall in love with the type of hero she created in her novels. Fat chance she has hanging around her New York City apartment.

Perchance her sister Elaine (Mary Ellen Trainor), looking for the other body parts of Elaine's dismembered husband, is kidnapped and ransomed by ruthless people, (Danny DeVito and Zack Norman.)
This just happens to be in Columbia. It seems that there are other interested parties that are down right vicious.

Will Joan Wilder find the type of romance she writes about or just a snot?

Prepare for a great adventure.
----------

The movie was filmed in Mexico. I have not been to Columbia but I have seen several of the places in Mexico. It does not diminish the film what so ever.

I saw this film several times previous to the Blu-ray packaging and I really can not say if the resolution or jut big screen TV makes a difference. However looking at the extra footage make me feel that they did a good job of restoration.

The Blu-ray edition has several extras.
Danny explains why he likes to use the word "maricon!"
The deleted scenes are really alternate scenes.

If you like juggle adventures with home bound people do not miss "Call Me Bwana" (1963) with Bob Hope

I have owned and watched several versions of this film. I even have the film script. I would say that the Kino two DVD versions is the best presentation so far. I watched both the English and German versions I find the story depressing but the telling of it and the acting fascinating.

A real added plus is the commentary by German Film Historian Werner Sedendorf. He brought up information directly relating to the film at the time it was relevant. Then he left some berating room so you could absorb and experience the information. To many commentaries turn into soap-box discussions or rill in slow times with useful information that however is irrelevant to the film at the time. The film has so much hidden death and lost culture that after the commentary you will have to watch it again.

The English version is not really entirely English. Enough English is presented that the German in-between is clear enough to follow the story. However the German version is spoken clear without mumbling and lacks any slang that would force the casual follower to rush for a dictionary.

The basic story is as Federico Garcia Lorca describes in his play, "The butterfly's Evil Spell", death in disguise of love. Prof. Immanuel Rath (Emil Jannings), a person afraid of life, starts out to save his students, who want to embrace life, from a fate worse than death. In the process he meats an entertainer, Lola Lola (Marlene Dietrich). She inadvertently is the instrument of the Professors downfall from grace.

The magic of the film is more in the telling of the story through acting, sound, and symbolism than the story its self.

There are certain movies that stand out on the holidays. This is not one of them. It probably should be. You will find that many of the Python crew plays many different characters in the movie.

Now the truth can be told. It all starts with three wise men delivering gifts to young Brian. Oops they correct their mistake. Later, Judea, 33 A.D., on a Saturday afternoon, once again Brian (Graham Chapman) is a tad far down the mount when they hear what sounds as "blessed are the cheese makers" (it's not meant to be taken literally that could mean any manufacturer). That is where Brian first sees Judith (Sue Jones.) Later he shall be involved in the People's Front of Judea. Later still he will be mistaken for the messiah (it is a logical mistake). Two factions fight over who owns the messiah (the Shoe Followers and Gourd Followers.)

You will recognize many of your favorite vices and verses. One of the highlights of the story is the speech given by Pilate and Biggus Dickus.
As with most complex movies you will find the one you are looking for Python comedy, fanatic parody, or if you wish a deeper meaning.

If you enjoyed this movie the next on your list should be "Wholly Moses" (1983) with Dudley Moore and Laraine Newman.

Wholly Moses!

"There's a place for us, a time and place for us. Hold my hand and we're halfway there."
Music: Leonard Bernstein Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim

And there is a movie for us. "West Side Story" is a classic on too many levels to describe here. Everything from the music to the choreography to the actors to...

One big plus is even if the story line is a classic they did not try to duplicate Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet" with modern clothing. The movie still maintains the feel and action of the play.

This movie tells the story of two people Tony and Maria (Richard Beymer and Natalie Wood) from adverse backgrounds that fall in love. They must cope with their new feelings. And to complicate things they have trouble from their families and society. Will they overcome these things or will fait and circumstance thwart their efforts and tragedy arise?

I could write a book on what makes this movie great but it is best that you watch and judge for yourself.

We all know it is a no-no to do genetic experiments on people. And once again a scientist David Banner has to do it to himself. Now to compound the problem he passes a trait onto his offspring Bruce Banner (Eric Bana). Add a little lab accident and et voila instant hulk.

This is not the best integration of real, animation and CGI. Yet the story is told and you have fun watching. There is a father / son conflict and a misunderstood Hulk dismantles a lot of military equipment with extreme prejudice. This film does not try to follow the TV series and is not so dated. The only real drawback is that Jennifer Connelly is just too cute and you forget to keep track of the story line.

This made for TV series looks like the standard made for TV items on the SciFi channel. However most of the actors are well known (as Alice Krige ... Lady Jessica Atreides) and the others should and maybe will be well known. The actors do not overshadow the characters. The sets and costumes are better than the average made for TV sets and the dialog is not that droll rehashed soap opera over the top tripe. The story follows the books ( 2nd and 3rd books in the original series) close enough for real dune people to enjoy.

The story starts off where the movies leave off and we get to see the politics and treachery along with the nobility of the nest couple of generations. In the end we are left with the question "What is the Golden Path?"

Rated 3 Stars"Tara Firma (Karen Mistal) is a real tomato" 2008-07-20
As we watch the overture we are treated of a glimpse of "Big-Breasted Girls Go to the Beach and Take Their Tops Off" and forget why we bought this film.

Long after the Tomato Wars a new generation has become blasé. But little do they know that the mad scientist Prof. Gangreen (John Astin, with his signature grin) is planning a comeback. Only this time he is disguising the tomatoes as tomato people.

Local pizza entrepreneur Matt Stevens (George Clooney, in his best role) is enamored of Prof. Gangreen's prize possession Tara (Karen Mistal). Tara has a little secret and likes sex and toast.

Mat and his co-worker/roommate Chad (Anthony Starke) are tomato bigots; after their entire uncle lived through the tomato wars. So they are adopted by the runaway Tara and her little secret and a furry friend named FT. Prof. Gangreen sends his trusted limelight seeking servant Igor (Steve Lundquist) to retrieve Tara.

Looks like the tomato is out of the bag and Matt will have to learn to tolerate tomatoes or lose Tara forever. FT, faced with adversity, must make the final sacrifice proving that all tomatoes are not bad.

We are promised that if this film mates its worth we will get to see.

Rated 3 Stars""For seven years I spoke to God"" 2008-07-19
It is the year 2057. The sun is about to peter-out in about 50years. A mission was sent seven years ago to reignite the sun; the ship disappeared. Now a new mission and last chance.

We are now introduced to the standard crew mix over the obligatory eating scene. The mission is reviled. We learn of each person's personality and quirks. And it takes a long slow time. (For people with Blu-ray you can fast-forward with sound on, it does not sound Mickey Mouse.) Soon we find the fate of the previous ship. We also suffer from an accident caused by miscalculation. Will these mishaps jeopardize the mission and the human fate?

The film is a tad slow probably by design and there are lots of flashy visuals. Many look like they ware borrowed from "Solaris" (2002.) The external accouterments aside, the film is a well formulated standard Sci-Fi with all the elements needed. We have each character meting his/her cuisses and how they deal or do not deal with it. There are moral and technical difficulties to deal with. The story has the "stay in the car" or "Don't open that!" feel. And of course the standard twists and turns with the surprise (supposed to be surprise) ending.

The whole film could have been and pretty much has been done in an hour or half hour episode of Star Trek. Not all Star Trek's had space monsters.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Blu-ray version has a couple of commentaries that make the movie a tad more attractive and the obligatory extras.

Rated 2 Stars"A misnomer should have been "Werewolf in a girls reformatory"" 2008-07-13
(AKA): Bei Vollmond Mord (Austria) / The Ghoul in School / Ghoul in a Girl's Dormitory (USA) / I Married a Werewolf / Monster Among the Girls (USA). Original title was "Lycanthropus." This is supposed to be a disease brought on by a full moon but for that in the know Lycanthrope is really just another name for werewolf.

Expecting a hairy James Belushi in Technicolor, I was surprised to find that this is a dubbed biting Italian film dredged up from the golden age of Italian horror films to be a pretender to today's cult classics.

The film is B&W and takes place in an Italian castle that is being used as a girls' reformatory. The girls picked for this film were chosen for their tasty looks and includes Barbara Lass who was Roman Polanski's first wife (1959-62). There are may other well and no so well known actors. The Tommy the Porter is played by Joseph Mercer known as the Peter Lorre of Italian horror films. Carl Schell is the brother of Maximilian Schell.

The title song "The Ghoul in School" was written by Marilyn Stewart, Frank Owens and sung by Adam Keefe. However most to the music is by Armando Trovajoli; Armando composed for over 200 films and videos, many of them were Italian horror films.

The story opens up with Dr. Julian Olcott (Carl Schell) and is greeted at the gate by the limping sneaky looking Tommy the Porter (Joseph Mercer) and the porter's German Sheppard that does not appear too friendly. A young girl swoons at the sight of the Doctor. From here we are introduced to a bevy of babes (each with some sinister past) and a staff of extremely strange people in their own way. Girls are being lured to the woods by cash. But shortly after the arrival of Dr. Olcott one girl is dispatched. This of course is attributed to tray wolves. So did the girl go astray or the wolf or the supplier of cash or any of the other mysterious characters? It is up to her girl friend Priscilla (Barbara Lass) that thinks her friend was murdered, and with the sometime help of Director Swift (Curt Lowens) that wants to protect the school's reputation, to find if there really is a perpetrator before someone else gets dispatched.

Oops, too late.

Yes it is the year 2638; this is the year of the cleansing war; different factions of people such as Alphas (genetically engineered), and the Rebels (natural born) with a few other factions are tossed in.

Suddenly the head ruthless Alpha, Capt. Winter (Michael York), is forced to cooperate with an equally determined and suspicious Rebel, Col. Liz Brendan (Harley Jane Kozak) on a mysterious mission through a wormhole to a mysterious Dark Planet. The only person to get us there is a renegade (Blake Boyd) that neither side likes or trusts.

As we are treated to treachery and tragedy we want to know why?

This film has that good and bad independent film feel.

Ferris Bueller's Day OffFerris Bueller's Day Off
Rated 5 Stars"Sloane dear, come to Daddy" 2008-06-28
During the first viewing the movie counts on surprise and anticipation.

Three high school comrades Ferris Bueller (Mattew Brodrick), Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck), and Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) take the day off from school. They have several adventures which take them to many fun locations among which are a parade, restaurant, and just skirt being detected by Ferris's father. Even though this is a teenage fantasy story everyone can enjoy it.

Ben Stein gives the performance of his life as the enthusiastic economics teacher. "Anybody...anybody?"

Meanwhile the principal Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), which knows of Ferris's devious ways, investigates and is foiled at every turn.

Ferris's jealous sister Jeanie (Jennifer Grey) has a few adventures of her own which include meeting a boy in the police station (Charlie Sheen.) She eventually comes to appreciate Ferris' ways.

Naive parents Katie (Cindy Pickett) and Tom (Lyman Ward) move blissfully through the movie only wanting what is best for their under the weather son.

For those musically inclined the movie is packed with great tunes.

Rated 5 Stars"Everyone is in love with Rick" 2008-06-28
1942 the Nazi occupation of France. Refugees must take a long and torturers rout Through Casa Blanca on their way to America; there "Everybody comes to Rick's." Rick's is a nightclub and a way station for a chance to get to America. Rick is played by Humphrey Bogart.

Here we also stay for a while to watch a drama unfold. There are overlapping stories. One of a young couple trying to get to America and the girl wondering if a girl should have to do something naughty was wondering what would happen if her husband, "a boy in many ways", would find out? A second rate crook (Peter Lorre) obtains something of value at the expense of two German curriers. A Police Captain (Claude Rains) is shocked to find there is gambling going on at Rick's. Many other stories surround the main theme of a love triangle that started in Paris and now can mean so much to individuals or the effort for freedom.

Will the Nazi's win their prize?
Will Capt. Renault get the young girl?
Will Rick get away with Ilsa?

This film has become quite a classic. There are many quotes and misquotes attributed to the film. You will find your self kibitzing. One memorable seen for all is the showdown where the Germans are singing "Watch on the Rhine" and Yvonne (Madeleine LeBeau) over powers them leading the "La Marseillaise."

Can not tell if it is Blu-ray or just the big screen but many details are al of a sudden visible. It does not add to the story but is improves the viewing experience.

As with many, I saw the movie first. This is where there is a rift as to whether the book or movie is better. I will leave that to you. (See my review of the movie) br /This is the story of a family that on the surface that seems different from most families. Later we see it is anything but. The lives of several generations of the Owens family are covered from major events to those thing that seem minor at the time. This book has a dark undertone and make you think the cat is going to jump off the refrigerator at any moment. Yet if you quit trying to anticipate the story, you find it rich in beautiful pose and people interaction. Contrarily, this story is interspersed with vulgar language and repugnant images (probably necessary to portray bad guys and bad times.) br /br /I enjoyed reading this book. I suppose now I will have to read something else by Alice Hoffman to see if this is her style or a radical departure. br /Throughout the story you are not sure if it is luck, logic, or just practical magic

Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader of "Wolf" 1994 popularity) does the unthinkable by even suggesting that The Ancient Egyptian Civilization may have been influenced by outside influences, very outside influences. This runs off all inquiries to his theories.

But wait it looks like some one is interested in his cryptology abilities. Catherine Langford (Viveca Lindfors) had a secret that her daddy found years ago. Her secret will change the life of Daniel and Col. Jonathan 'Jack' O'Neil (Kurt Russell). Turns out that they will have a mission that will take them on a sojourn to the other end of the known universe. We go with them. What will we find and will we be able to bet back?

I will not compare media distributions however now Blue-ray and extended versions have become the common and not an exception.
