![]() | "Awesome fantasy story, Henson at his best!" | 2009-10-19 |
| This was viewed on a 42" Panasonic Plasma, BD35 Player. PQ 4/5(a bit grainy and digitized) and 5/5 for AQ. For an older film this Blu-Ray was a fine upgrade. Jim Henson creates another world of escapism with creative creatures and an engaging storyline. I had not seen this film in many years, but once again the 80's soundtrack and iconic creatures and intro of Jennifer Connelly early in her career was excellent. For fans of this film, the transfer provides a new level of color-rich intensity. Give it a look! | ||

| I viewed this on a 42" Panasonic Plasma and BD35 Player. Transfer is a 4/5 on PQ and 4/5 on AQ. This will probably take its place among my favorite Denzel Washington films. While it is highly stylized in shooting style, the story and relationship between him and the little girl and his redemption made this an above average thriller. Dakota and Denzel are outstanding, and this film is a nailbaiting rollercoaster ride to the end. Highly recommended. | ||

![]() | "An impressive upgrade to the SD & still a "stand out" film" | 2009-10-04 |
| This review is for the UK Steelbook release (same transfer as US version). I viewed it on a 42" Panasonic Plasma and BD35 Panasonic player.
I am a huge, long-time fan of this film, and like many, was looking forward to the Blu-Ray release. Although I had read some preview reviews, I am very impressed with this Blu-Ray. I do not own the UK Superbit, which I am told is a better overall transfer, but in comparison to the standard definition version, which I did own, this film is an obvious upgrade. I own 390+ Blu-Rays and this is one of the sharpest and color rich transfers I have seen so far. I think the anticipation of fans, put an extreme expectation on perfection for this transfer, as did the studio's touting of the "superior" nature of the "Sapphire" series. And yes, I have seen several "reference-quality" BD's, like the UK Zulu which remains the best PQ I have ever seen, along with discs such as I Robot. There are some problems with this disc, due to over-digitization. But those scenes were few and far between, for me, and the detail, starting from the opening battle scene, down to those where Maximus is walking through the fields, and daylight shots, the clarity and detail on this disc is amazing. The DTS sound also does not disappoint, as it did not in the SD version. It is also possible that some with an LCD screen, or other brighter settings will see more of the digitization, but in Cinema Mode (my setting of choice), on a Plasma, the theater experience was replicated with true representation at home, for me. The film remains one of my favorite films of all time, and it continues to be towards the top of my list for Drama films. The cast is at its best, and Ridley and all creative talent involved deserve every accolade bestowed upon this film. Regardless of what you hear from threads and reviews, give this disc a chance, at least as a rental. Whether a superior transfer is released later on, or not, this film has never looked as good, to me, as it does in this Blu-Ray edition. PQ 4.5/5, AQ 5/5.
| Criminal Minds - The First Season | ||
![]() | "Love this show! Suspenseful, and interactive in solving crimes" | 2009-09-27 |
| I did not watch this show when it first aired, just because I didn't get a chance to. I studied Psychology and am very interested in any shows/movies that are based on criminal profiling or behavioral analysis. The show, cast and writing provide an engulfing glimpse into the process of criminal profiling and the process of examining evidence and solving the crime. However, my favorite aspect is the psychological discussion regarding motives,background and mindset of the criminals. We just watched the cliffhanger for season 1, and I can't wait to start season 2. It was fantastic to see the slow character development over the course of the season,with small snippets revealed-the show is focused on the plots of the cases, but we are beginning to see "beneath the surface" of the characters.
Definitely check this show out-the team approach to solving these crimes carried out by very disturbed individuals lets you theorize and stretch your brain. Every episode is challenging and allows you to "take part" in discussing the killers, characters and overarching themes of the characters. Unmissable 1st season-love it!

![]() | "Picture a bit soft, effects still pretty amazing" | 2009-09-11 |
| I just watched this on my 42" Panasonic Plasma and BD35 Player. It was not the sharpest picture, but I'd say a 3.5/5 for PQ and 4/5 for AQ. The storyline, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Davis were great. The creature effects matched Jeff's eccentric personality well, and were a mix of funny, but still rather groundbreaking in the grand scheme of things. I can't say I'd buy this disc (mine came free with an early adopter BD promo in '07), but I definitely recommend you viewing it if you're a fan of the director,or actors, and like this type of flick. It still stands up! | ||

| The film was viewed on a 42" Panasonic Plasma and BD35 Player. This film remains a classic for me, and I love the film, premise, and soundtrack. The film translates very well to Blu-Ray and sharper and even more vibrant in this format. It is not perfect, but the upgrade for fans, is definitely worth it. The entire cast is fantastic, and the "Ghostbusters" adventures still hold up well for me. Definitely recommended! | ||

| The Fifth Element (Remastered) [Blu-ray] | ||
![]() | "Interesting costume design, existential story line" | 2009-07-28 |
| This remastered Blu-Ray version was watched on a Panasonic 42" Plasma and BD35K player. PQ 4/5 and AQ 5/5. I had not seen this film in a few years and found the visuals, and overarching storyline refreshing. The costume design and visual look of the film was particularly interesting and offered stylistic elements not seen on film since. The creatures seemed reminiscent of the Dark Crystal, which is one of my favorite films, so it felt familiar in that sense. The characters were relatable, and the "perfect" being was particularly touching as a "messenger" of sorts, in communicating our inherent habit of destroying ourselves, which of course, is one of the central themes of the film. Though not preachy, this characters' innocense and emphasis on this theme recentered the film to the core concepts effectively. Despite the fact that the film is filled with visually interesting effects and sound design/effects, this allows the film to remain humanistic. Many science fiction films fail in this regard, instead becoming overshadowed with technological aspects and special effects, but the Fifth Element stays true to its underlying message of the need and appreciation for love and the importance of humanity. Overall, this film was entertaining and action packed. However, I didn't give it a 5, because it seemed to lag in parts and some of the acting was overdone, in a way, that was too distracting, for me. Still for its visual elemements and overall theme, it was one of the most interesting sci-fi flicks I've seen. Recommended. | ||

![]() | "Tongue in Cheek blow for Hollywood-hilarious characters" | 2009-07-28 |
| Film was viewed on a 42" Panasonic Plasma and BD35K player. PQ 4/5 and AQ 5/5. This film is a "love it" or "hate it" type film. For me, as a huge movie enthusiast, it provided the kind of comic relief that pokes fun at hollywood, its "system", the politics and of course, its stereotypes. Robert Downey Jr and the rest of the cast do a fantastic job of creating characters that never take themselves too seriously, which provides the comic relief in the film. The acting and storyline is necessarily over the top, and all of the blatant, non-PC comments are welcomed given the context of the film. A certain mindset is required to enjoy this film, and while some may find it offense, there are many other films that are more offensive, and less funny than this one. The sound track of this film is fantastic and is worth a separate purchase if you like the style and many of the songs add to the film's desire to appear as though it's a real war film (which of course its not). These are some of the funniest performances we may ever see by this cast. So if if you can lend yourself to its type of humor, you will have a blast. | ||

![]() | "VERY easy to use, compact and easy to set up!" | 2009-07-23 |
| We just received this and I used it for my trip to work this morning. As soon as I turned it on, it guided me through all of the steps necessary to get it up and running for my location, time zone and display needs. This will be replacing an older MIO GPS, and I couldn't be happier so far. In addition to its ease of use, it is very small and sleek, and the mounting arm is very simple to attach to the unit itself. Like many GPS's it has numerous voices, and display settings, but though we are techno-savvy, this one was much easier to set up than our older Mio. Highly recommend! | ||
| Catch and Release [Blu-ray] | ||
![]() | "Film has potential but feels random and lacks arc" | 2009-07-20 |
| This review is for the Blu-Ray release, watched on a 42" Panasonic Plasma and BD35K player. Overall PQ 4/5 and AQ 4/5. The Film is a 3/5.
As a budding fan of Jennifer Garner, I was hoping for a solid film where she could engage us, as the girl next door, caught up in a love dramedy. After viewing the film,it's clear she, as well as the other actors did what they could to convey the plight and life situation of these characters. The film never rally takes off-it hovers on the edge of comedy, drama and self-discovery, but to me, just seemed to be a half-hearted attempt to elicit sympathy and empathy, from the audience. I love romantic comedies, but this one seems like a series of vignettes-never really arriving. The end seems oddly compensatory, and we never really feel as though Jennifer Garner's character finds herself or stands on her own. I was sorely disappointed, that the setting itself was the best character in the film. ****Spoiler Alert*** The story arc feels very "catch and release"-the story has its moments, like when Jennifer Garner's character realizes that her fiance has been cheating on her, and the part where she is told that her fiance's friend is in love with her. But no storyline is actually pursued. Things are said and done, but the pieces feel slightly "off". The film has no beginning, middle and end-it just kind of drifts. Jennifer's character does not seem realistic, to me, in that she accepts her fiance's mistress into her house without much of a hiccup, and no one actually grieves for the loss of their friend, except for a few brief crying scenes, which feel obligatory.

| This film was watched on a 42" Panasonic Plasma, and BD35 player. As this is one of my favorite Pixar movies, I was very excited to finally see it on Blu-Ray. While the SD already flexes Pixar's animation brilliance muscle,the Blu-Ray is brighter, and even more sharp. The story is well known, and the characters all heart-felt and adorable. The Blu-Ray is an upgrade in both sound and picture, with increased sharpness and subtelty in sound layers. Very enjoyable and a must for Pixar fans! | ||

![]() | "Love this show! Fun romp in southern setting-hot & funny!" | 2009-06-20 |
| PQ 4.5/5, AQ 4/5. Watched on a 42" and 50" Plasma and BD35 and LG BH200 BD player. Although I had not watched the show on HBO the 1st time it aired, we watched it on a BD set, as my girlfriend loves vampire-themed shows and books. She had read the Sookie Stackhouse series and enjoyed it very much. The show has very funny, engaging characters, and blends vampire lore with humor extremely well. I was hooked about episode 3, and enjoyed the dialogue and chemistry between the characters. As I am consistently immersed in technology, the step back to a simple time, with "normal" people was refreshing and more realistic than other shows on TV. The characters are hysterical, and the script is funny and witty which balances out the grim counter story of the vampire society. Though obvious, the paralells of the perils of discrimination against marginalized groups, is expertly interwoven in the Vampire vs. Human political rights fight, and is one of the most valuable aspects of the show. I highly recommend this show for anyone who loves vampires, or supernatural elements! | ||

![]() | "Ground breaking and politically relevant-then and now!" | 2009-06-12 |
| This Blu-Ray was watched on a 42" Panasonic Plasma and BD35 Player. I am 33 years old and have a general idea of the political climate, during the time this film was released. I've also grown up in a film climate that is pre-occupied with special effects, generated by computers, and a break-neck pace. But this film's slower pace and emphasis on the dialogue worked for me. The most striking aspect of this film, was that it is still relevant in its message and themes, for today. The warnings of the perils of aggression worldwide, could not be more important, than today, given the terrorist & nuclear threats. In addition, the repeated emphasis on the need for world leaders to unite and the message to be given to them, all at once, instead of in isolation, speaks volumes of the general need for a unified and concerted worldwide effort for less aggression and war-all of these things were interlaced in the dialogue, without an overkill of "preaching". The PQ was a 3/5/5, with noticable artifacts and grain. I am not sure if anything was done to the original print, as I've not seen it. Since it was in black and white, there is nothing to say regarding color. However, overall the film was fairly clear and sharp, given its age. Sound quality was a 4/5, and the music in the film is representative of the power of sound in older films in conveying drama, fear, and other emotions. Though the effects in the film can of course not be compared to today's pomp and circumstance, the film stands solid on its political message for mankind. The visual look of the film is still iconic,and it's clear why the film took its place in sci-fi history as a multi-faceted precursor to modern sci-fi. Thoroughly enjoyed! | ||

| Battlestar Galactica - Season One [HD DVD] | ||
![]() | "Visually and philosphically interesting-1st time watcher" | 2009-06-04 |
| This review is for the HD DVD set. PQ 3.5/5, AQ 5/5/. I have the UK version, because I heard the packaging was a bit more robust and I didn't want scratched discs. I had never seen Battlestar Galactica when it was on TV, and literally just concluded watching season 1 on HD DVD for the 1st time ever. I don't consider myself a hard-core sci-fi fan, though I enjoy shows such as Doll House, Firefly and some others, for their fusion of various genres (futuristic drama, etc), I had discussed the show with long time fans, and see now where the disappointment in the transfer is coming from. I know fans were awaiting a major upgrade and unfortunately, though clear and detailed in some scenes, it was very noisy and grainy in most. I have over 300 HD DVD's, and 300 BD's, and this is one of the poorest transfers I've seen so far. The True HD soundtrack however works, and becomes very effective during chase, fighting and scenes with multiple layers of voices, background sound, and music. I enjoy the humor and underlying religious and philosophical implications of the show, as well as the overarching theme of man vs machine, how far man will go,based on "hope" alone, and the general instincts of survival, despite a fusion between man and machine. Visually the series was very interesting to me. The space ship design, especially with the humanistic elements of being alive, and the militaristic prowess was appealing, as was the equality among the sexes. In addition the set design, costumes, and even the sounds of the space ships flying was very convincing. Some of the sets looked overly "staged", but the characters are likeable and powerful, and the consistent struggle of humans trying to maintain their humanity, and distinguish themselves from the machines trying to eradicate them. I look forward to watching the other seasons on Blu-Ray! | ||
| Dan in Real Life [Blu-ray] | ||
![]() | "Loved it! Very sweet and "real life"-mission accomplished" | 2009-05-03 |
| This review is for the Blu-Ray. PQ 4/5, AQ 4/5 (no real "booming scenes to really judge), and movie 5/5. It was viewed on a 42" Panasonic Plasma and BD35 Player. The film makers succeeded in creating a REAL movie. The family, though a bit "Disney", was a refreshing break from some of the "baggage ridden" portrayals seen in recent films, that were to create them in this way. This family has great on-screen chemistry, and I particularly love the way the mom and dad still care for their older sons. Trying not to let cynicism infiltrate my review, I simply accepted the fact that a family such as this exists, and it made the film all the more sweet. The film creates a seemingly impossible situation, but a very lovable fairytale of love found after much struggle. Dan is invincible to many as he is is disconnected from himself, as well as from the real possibility of love. The otherwise "funny man" Steve Carrell does a great job portraying this character, and it did make me see him in a different light-most likely because I am not a watcher of "The Office"I rented this with my girlfriend of 10 years, and we had a great time experiencing his journey to Marie's character. If you don't like romantic flicks, stay away. If you can lend yourself for 2 hours to this on-screen family, his struggles as a single dad (widower), and believe in the possibility of surprise and love, give this lone a shot. It has an honesty that is rarely captured on screen, in a very "real" feel. | ||

![]() | "Fantastic precursor to modern Alien films-beautiful score" | 2009-05-02 |
| This review is for the Blu-Ray and it was viewed on a 42" Panasonic Plasma and BD35 Player. I am 33 years old, and must confess that I had never seen this film in its entirety. As I am a huge fan of Alien and similarly themed films, I decided to make this the day to start my journey into this disc set. I watched the original "Theatrical" ed, and will update my review as I watch the others. PQ 3.5 and AQ 5. I was a little disappointed in the picture quality, which displays noticable grain. I've seen old films with better PQ. First, the performance of the lead character was one of the most heartfelt I've ever seen. His desire to explore and be a part of this otherworldly miracle is just stirring. I absolutely loved the score. I think that music and scoring was, perhaps used much more effectively in this time period. The effects, even for an older film, were outstanding and with a little suspension of disbelief-convincing. The space ship at the end is just incredible, as is the return of the other "abductees". This is a great story, and masterpiece by Spielberg. Many elements are precursors for modern day Sci-Fi movies, series and themes in our cinematic experience. I am certainly glad to own this set, and look forward to watching the other versions another time, along with the special features. | ||
