![]() | "S-S-S-S-MMMMMMMMMMOOOOOOOOOOKKKKKKIN' HOT FUN." | 2009-11-08 |
| One of Jim Carrey's early movies, and the one that catapaulted him to stardom, is S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-S-SMMMMMMMMMMMMMOOOKIN' HOT FUN. Carrey is absolute L-M-F-A-O. Cameron Diaz, in her first film, is a visual treat and perfect as Tina, the woman who may not be what she initially seems to be. Amy Yasbeck, an over-the-top Marian in the Robin Hood parody "Robin Hood: Men In Tights," is mysterious and also may not seem to be who she initially appears to be. Peter Riegert, a nut case in "National Lampoon's Animal House," is devious as the nasty Dorian. One of my favourite moments is-SPOILER-when The Mask is dancing at the "Coco Bongo." I especially loved Lt. Kallaway and Doyle, specifically during the park scene and the swingin' aftermath. Hilarious, and semi-serious, from start to finish. The special features are somewhat disappointing, as there's no director commentary for the deleted scenes, which I think should have been kept in the movie. Also, the picture quality of the deleted scenes wasn't very good. I highly recommend the movie. If you like Jim Carrey or Cameron Diaz, you'll LLLLOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVEEEEEEEEE
THIS MOVIE. Grooovvvvvvvvvy, baby. Rated PG-13, but should have been rated PG.

| Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurman and Academy Award winner Sir Sean Connery star in this big-screen adaptation of the popular 1960's television series which starred Honor Blackman, Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg. Unfortunately, a lot of scenes which were in the trailer were deleted from the film after what are rumored to be terrible test screenings, and in the end, we wind up with what looks like an action movie trailer for the real thing (please excuse me for using Ridley Scott's descrption of his own film "Kingdom Of Heaven" when talking about the Director's Cut). The original length of the movie is rumored to run aywhere from 115 minutes to 2/1/2 hours. Frankly, I LOVED the movie, but am left feeling cheated because the Director's Cut has not been released. Warner Bros. should plan to release it, as there is a fan base, however small, for this movie. Also, there's a narrative error caused by the editing down to 86-89 minutes-SPOILER AHEAD!!!-when infiltrating Sir August De Wynter's lair, how did the real Doctor Peel know the code words ("How now, brown cow?") to get into the lair with John Steed, as the line is not heard in the film prior to the scene?-SPOILER OVER!!! I enjoyed the acting of everyone involved, but felt that Sean Connery was underused (and, judging by the trailer and information on another site, most of his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor). SPOILER ALERT!!! Patrick Macnee's cameo was good. I guess the reason he chose not to appear on screen (and why Ms. Rigg turned down a cameo in the film) is because they didn't want the cameos to distract the audience from the plot of the movie. It also would have been nice to see Honor Blackman, another Bond Girl, appear in the film as well. Trivia: Patrick Macnee also appeared in a Bond film: "A View To A Kill." PLEASE, somebody contact Warner Bros. & urge them to release the Director's Cut of this movie and the Director's Cut of
"Anna Karenina" starring Sophie Marceau, Sean Bean, James Fox, Phyllida Law and Alfred Molina. This movie was initially rated PG, but upon the (ultimately stupid and late) decision to include brief rear male nudity and an "F" word (which were really not neccessary), was re-rated PG-13.

| Harrison Ford, James Earl Jones & Samuel L. Jackson star in "Patriot Games," a thriller based on the best-selling novel by Tom Clancy ("The Hunt For Red October"). The film is very well-paced, though I wish the screenwriter had included a scene with Sally suggesting names for-SPOILER!!!-Cathy's baby. The action scenes were well handled, and the suspense deftly crafted. Sean Bean is also terrific. I recommend this film to fans of action flicks, Harrison Ford, James Earl Jones and Samuel L. Jackson. Should have been rated PG-13 for mild language and some violence. | ||
| Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete First Season | ||
![]() | ""A Hack From NoWheresVille." "What A...Super Man."" | 2009-10-12 |
| Another "Superman" series after the serials with George Reeves and the enormously successful (discounting the horrendous "Superman III" & "Superman IV"), did we REALLY NEED another "Superman" series? The answer is a resounding YES, YES, YES. Deborah Joy Levine has recreated Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's immortal comic book hero for a new generation. Gone is Lex Luthor, mad scientist with a bald head. Gone is Lois Lane, typical damsel-in-distress. Gone is Perry White, "Great Caesar's Gohst." But...never fear, die-hard "Superman" fans, all is not lost. Lex Luthor, Lois Lane and Perry White are only a few of the characters that have been updated in this family-friendly television series. As it was shot for ABC, the show was very family friendly, with only some suggestive dialogue, but that's as far is it got (at least for Season 1; I've yet to buy Seasons 2-4, as I wasn't allowed to see all the episodes of this wonderful series, but then again, I was only 7 years old). No graphic violence, no swearing and no sexual content. Today's shows, unfortunately, are very raunchy, and you can almost not find a wholesome family program (unless you have TVLand, where you'll constantly find reruns of "I Love Lucy," "Hogan's Heroes" and the classic favourite "The Andy Griffith Show.") Why is is that Disney's 1957-1959 television series "Zorro" isn't rerun anymore? Or The Three Stooges' shorts? Or "Touched By An Angel"? Or "New World Zorro"? Or this excellent show? All of these television shows were family-friendly. But I digress.
Thwe first season of this show is HIGH-FLYING FUN. I especially liked the banter between Lois, Clark and Cat. The bickering that went on was never risque. I also love "Foundling." Very well-written scene where Lois and Clark face off about his having lied to Lois. Every episode of the first season is excellent. I can't wait to get the rest of the seasons. The bonus features aren't as many as I thought, but everything is there: interviews with Dean Cain, Teri Hatcher, John Shea, Tracy Scoggins, K Callan, Eddie Jones, Deborah Joy Levine, Robert Butler and a few of the behind-the scenes technicians. I also highly recommend the commentary on the pilot, as well as the series presentation andf introduction to the pilot by Ms. Levine. "It's a bird, it's a plane. No, it's...SUPERMAN." And The Man Of Steel IS BACK, AND FLYING HIGHER THAN EVER. (It would have been nice if Christopher Reeve, for me, the ideal and quintessential screen Superman, had made a guest appearance in the series. Not Rated.

![]() | "Terrific Action-Suspense Thriller." | 2009-10-12 |
| Based on the series starring Roger Moore, who would go on to even greater fame as James Bond in seven classic films, "The Saint" is reborn...this time from the writer of "Die Hard With A Vengeance" and the director of "Dead Calm," "Patriot Games" & "Clear And Present Danger." Starring Val Kilmer ("Tombstone," "Batman Forever") and Elisabeth Shue ("The Karate Kid"), this film is an adrenaline-charged, suspense-filled ride from start to hair-raising finish. Listen for a surprise cameo just before the end credits. (It's "Saint"ly). Though I prefer the new ending, I would like to see the original ending as Jonathan Hensleigh and Philip Noyce envisioned the film. Disregard the PG-13 rating. It's tame, compared to "Good Luck, Chuck" and other salacious movies being released nowadays. Rated PG for action-violence and brief strong language. | ||

| The long-anticipated sequel to the Academy Award winning suspense thriller "Silence Of The Lambs" is here...and it's a well-crafted story. I have not read the novels, so I can't compare them. The reviews I read (mostly from newspapers and Christian websites) said that this was a really gory movie, so I was expecting that. I was a trifle disappointed that there really wasn't very much blood (and that a pivotal flashback sequence was barely visible, though the audience gets the idea from the blurred images in the scene). That's my only complaint. Oh, yes...why were there scenes in the trailer that were deleted from the film? Really stupid practice, that is. Excellent movie. The acting is top-notch on every level. If you love "Silence," you'll enjoy "Hannibal."

| What can I say about this suspense thriller that hasn't been said before? The twists and turns abound until the final minutes of the movie. "And just like that, he's gone." Excellent, tour-de-force performances from everyone. SPOILER WARNING!!! Pay attention to Verbal (Kevin Spacey) in the scene where Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) is yelling at him. SPOILER OVER!!! My only gripe is that Christopher McQuarrie didn't appear in any of the featurettes located on the flip side of the disc (though he briefly appears in the introduction to one of the featurettes). I highly recommend this movie. You'll be surprised. The movie is also very well-written by Christopher McQuarrie and expertly directed by Bryan Singer (both of them would reunite to, respectively, co-write [with Nathan Alexander] and direct "Valkyrie"; please see my review on that equally excellent movie). This movie should have been rated PG-13 for violence and some language. | ||

![]() | "Excellent Acting All Around, But..." | 2009-08-16 |
| WARNING!!! SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!
This interesting biopic about Elizabeth I, the greatest monarch England has ever known, features excellent acting all around, but is grossly inaccurate on a lot of points. For starters, Robert Dudley, the Earl Of Leicester, WAS NEVER implicated in any plot against the Queen, and they remained close friends until his death. Secondly, at the beginning of the movie, the guard who comes to arrest Elzabeth calls out "Princess Elizabeth!" In reality, Henry VIII had Elizabeth stripped of her royal title as a public display of her illegitimacy and she was formally addressed as "Lady Elizabeth." Also, there's no evidence that Francis Walsingham (in reality in his 20's when Elizabeth ascended the throne) was involved in the death of Mary Of Guise, who in one scene, is riding in front of her troops. Back then, reigning women DID NOT ride at the front of their troops and rarely rode their horses with both legs over the side. Just some interesting historical details. On the whole, like "Amadeus," it's an interesting biopic, but inaccurate on several points. I recommend "Elizabeth I" starring Helen Mirren and Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons instead.
