![]() | "Has its problems" | 2007-10-29 |
| The problem I have with this little b*gger is if there's a weak current, it switches itself off. I live in an old building with cr*p electricity so it's always switching off. Then, when it gets a phantom electricity charge, it switches itself back on: at full volume blast! So I have to constantly get up and go across the room and adjust things. | ||

![]() | "Dylan Baker did a remarkable job" | 2007-07-27 |
| He was great with the voices and I was never bored. That NYtimes reviewer doesn't know what she's talking about. The ending was a little bit too pat and "happy" for my taste. So it goes. Yay Mr. Baker! | ||

![]() | "I really enjoyed this book" | 2006-11-08 |
| I liked all the insider gossip; I'm an anglophile so I got a lot of the references, but I wonder if my fellow Americans who don't listen to BBC religiously would get a lot of the inside stuff? I decided not to read the end of the book so I'll never know what happens. My idiosyncracies. Thank you Mr. Fellowes. I look forward to more more more!!! | ||

![]() | "I just didn't get it" | 2006-05-13 |
| This movie seemed to vacillate between funny ha ha office bullsh*t and then really freaky stuff that made me cringe and want to retch. I don't like that; going back and forth and not knowing what they "want" from me. And I REALLY didn't 'get' the ending. I didn't buy the romance. The only thing I enjoyed about this whole movie was Kevin Spacey; that's it. Just skip through the rest of the crap. | ||

| Stop the Insanity | ||
![]() | "Don't believe the hype" | 2005-11-06 |
| Like every other diet book out there: her argument boils down to: Eat right Exercise She's a hypocrite. She goes on and on about how evil the diet industry is and how she's one of us because she was once fat. Fine: great. But half her arguements I'm not buying: No one fact checks books anymore. Also, the book is still fixated on fat. Recently, we learned that it isn't just fat that makes us fat. Look at a bag of sugar: if I eat that, will I not gain a pound? It's fat free... Great Susan: how do we stop the insanity? First: EAT WHATEVER YOU WANT (as long as it's health food) Second: EXERCISE Third: BREATHE (I think this is just filler cuz she didn't have anything else to offer). Instead of starving ourselves, we're to go to a chart of how many calories we're to expend a day. That's still cutting calories. Also, lumping OA into the diet industry is wrong: it's not for profit. Taking people out for a walk instead of going to an OA meeting is like taking raging alcoholics out for coffee instead of attending an AA meeting. A temporary solution to an underlying problem. Didn't susan later have some sort of substance abuse problem too? Methinks the lady doth protest too much... She's gotten all her little droogs to write raving comentaries on her book: but who the hell has heard of Susan Powter in the last 10 years. NO ONE!! SA's a flash in the pan. Here's the scoop: eat right and exercise. Now pay me a billion dollars cuz I'm telling you "the truth." | ||

![]() | "Fizzles at the end" | 2005-07-11 |
| I've thought Grisham was getting really sloppy and lazy recently: and then I picked this up and thought, "Damn! He's got a new editor!" I really enjoyed this and recommended it to my friends. The ending fizzles a bit, however. Spoiler: What the hell happened to Sammy Tin? | ||

![]() | "Full of Loose ends" | 2005-06-03 |
| Things that didn't go anywhere: The fig The burned notebook the pile of e*crement next to the body the cloak in the tree (how and why did it end up there?) The syphillis the photographer/photography The thumb Otto's story (why was he in the tuberculosis ward if he wasn't originally sick?) | ||

![]() | "You don't have to have a baby to enjoy this album!" | 2005-02-19 |
| I am a thirty-something woman who just puts this album on repeat in the CD player. It's soft and soothing and almost every single one of the songs is beautiful. Very soft; very pretty. Like a cool rain on a fevered brow. ;) | ||

![]() | "I cried over almost every story" | 2004-09-07 |
| Lynda Barry is so amazing with her honesty. Every story resonated with me: she didn't try to paint herself in a great light, but showed the truth -- which blew me away. Thank you, Lynda, for being so honest. I cried, cried, cried cuz I saw myself in your stories. So many regrets I have after years and years, myself. So many people who I was cruel to; so many things I screwed up. | ||

![]() | "Read "1984" instead" | 2004-08-20 |
| Perhaps because it's so lauded I expected more. It's just a 1984, Brave New World, Farenheit 451, Animal Farm or Clockwork Orange for kids -- I guess. It just made me want to read those books instead. There were many unanswered questions at the end of the book. I would have liked to have known why the community was the way it was and how it got there. How did people only see in black and white? How did they get rid of the sun? How did they grow crops if there was no sun? Why are the birth mothers considered so stupid and low, yet they're giving birth to the entire community -- therefore giving birth to stupid kids? How come Jonas isn't stupid? Where is he at the end? It wasn't clear. Or I'm just too dumb to read into things. I would have liked more of a "fleshing out" of the community instead of the bare bones we are given. I'll buy anything -- just sell it to me. | ||

![]() | "You get your money's worth" | 2004-04-28 |
| One day, I walk 12,000 + steps and the next day, I walk 5,000 steps -- SAME DISTANCE!! I walk to and from work and I don't know which to believe. Somewhere in the middle? Completely erratic counting: no rhyme or reason. | ||
| Naked Economics: Undressing the Dismal Science | ||
![]() | "Loved loved loved this book!" | 2003-12-12 |
| I'm a recovering Psychology major who only had one statistics course in college: and that was a math for dummies. This is for all those people who can't do equations in their minds. I've always been facinated by economics, but it always seemed so dry and unappealing and eye-crossing. I've been looking for an econ-for-dummies book for years. Thank you, Mr. Wheelan!!! | ||
| Truer Than True Romance: Classic Love Comics Retold! | ||
![]() | "Work of Genius" | 2001-12-09 |
| Thank you Ms. Martinet for providing something I didn't even know I needed. This was an excellent book that was intelligently funny. I love a larf more than anyone and this came through for me. I tried to read through the comics themselves and figure out the original plot (provided by Ms. Martinet) but couldn't figure them out. Good thing she did something even better. Reminds me of an old television show "Mad Movies" that I loved. Can't gush more. Thank you! | ||
| Clutter Control : Putting Your Home on a Diet | ||
![]() | "Couldn't put it down" | 2001-06-07 |
| It's odd that I was facinated by this book and took it on vacation with me. I really enjoyed reading it. I'm naturally neurotically tidy and was glad for new tips and tricks to help me with being even more psychotic about clutter. :) Most advice was fantastic and very helpful. Props to you, Jeff. | ||

![]() | "In the Vein of WORKING and GIG" | 2001-05-25 |
| I'm glad this book was written because I'm a middle-class woman with a college education and a lot of choices in life. I know it's tough out there and I'm glad that I was able to take a peek and see how others live. Wal-Mart sounds horrible; I used to work at a grocery store as a teenager bagging groceries and that was hades. I knew I had a way out, but most people are not as fortunate. Thank you Ms. Ehrenreich for writing such an eye-opening, powerful book. I've reccommended it to a lot of my friends. | ||
| Gig: Americans Talk About Their Jobs at the Turn of the Millennium | ||
![]() | "I loved, loved, loved, loved this book" | 2001-01-28 |
| I couldn't get enough of this book. I've always enjoyed the idea of Studs Terkel's WORKING and fantasised about perhaps writing an updated version. But, someone beat me to it (Thank Goodness, cuz it was never gonna get done otherwise). WORKING is a little antiquated, however, so not entirely enjoyable. I had to take everything with the thought, "Yeah, well, this was 30 years ago." Thank you John Bowe et. al. It's voyeristic to read this book, yes, but it's also comforting to see people talk about their jobs with love and hate: the same mixed feelings everyone has. We do need love and work in order to be happy. If a human has something to do, s/he atleast has something to think about (good or bad). Idleness is horrorific. I reccomend this book highly. | ||
| The Haunting | ||
![]() | "Read the Book" | 2000-08-11 |
| What made the book horrorific/good was not the special effects but the thoughts/feelings of the main characters. The ending was completely destroyed. The writers/director/producer should have stuck closer to the original story and this would have been a much better movie: a classic. C'est la vie. | ||
| LA Loca Adventures on the Isle of Adolescence S Series, No 46) | ||
![]() | "Changed my perception of the world" | 2000-07-29 |
| I was probably too young when I first went to go see this woman read her poetry in Chicago; 16 or seventeen. Probably had never been kissed and listening to poetry about giving head and skateboarding. I probably didn't understand a word of it, but it blew my mind! I bought her book and read it to friends in her same halting, pitching style. This woman is a genius. She will always be an inspiration to me. My heart will always leap up when I see her name. | ||
| Writing New York : A Literary Anthology | ||
![]() | "Delightful and Intriguing Read" | 2000-07-13 |
| I'm a transplant from San Francisco but have always been a New Yorker at heart. Every morning, while drinking my coffee, I read a few of these essays, poems and stories. I love this island and city and I love reading about it. Truly a delight for any New Yorker or New York lover. | ||
| No Kiss for Mother | ||
![]() | "A Lot of Fun" | 1999-11-05 |
| My mother used to love to read this to me when I was a kid; we still have one of the earlier issues. I'm glad it was re-released. It's a classic: recommended for adults as well as children. | ||
| Shel Silverstein - Ned Kelly: Original MGM Motion Picture Soundtrack [Enhanced CD] | ||
![]() | "Impressive Stuff" | 1999-10-02 |
| Shel Silverstein wrote all lyrics and music to this soundtrack: the first song, Ned Kelly, is my favorite -- catchy tune and lyrics. Almost all are catchy. Very folky stuff. If you like old Bob Dylan, you'll love this. | ||
| Day Job: A Workplace Reader for the Restless Age | ||
![]() | "Brilliant -- and Confusing" | 1999-01-24 |
| On the back of this book, it reads: Fiction/Business/Popular Culture. Is this some well-disguised TQM book? In the back of the book, it has order forms for more books -- so that middle management can give them to all junior staff and say, "I understand you, dude: my office, five o'clock." If it's not just a disguised TQM book, I'm awed by the brilliance. If it is a disguised TQM book, I'm disgusted. They've infiltrated our ranks and are using our own against us. | ||
| Goblins Whirlwind | ||
![]() | "Freaky, yet wanting" | 1999-01-04 |
| I just finished "Goblins." I won't give away anything, but I was dissapointed in Scully's characterization. Bleah. Talk about a bubbleheaded bimbo who's always fussing with her hair?! When does Scully giggle, fuss with her hair and nag Mulder all the time? The story properly freaked me out, however, and made me wish I hadn't read it right before bed! | ||
| Killing Orders | ||
![]() | "Fun Heroine" | 1998-12-29 |
| This is the first book I've read by her and enjoyed it. I was stumped until the end, so that's good. | ||
| Neuromancer (Remembering Tomorrow) | ||
![]() | "Dense and painful" | 1998-12-29 |
| I'm impressed that Gibson wrote this in the early 80's, yet was able to describe the "future" so clearly. Amazing. I was excited about reading this book; however, I found it to be incredibly difficult to read and had to put it down midway through. I had no idea what he was writing about and it was hard for me to follow what was going on. | ||
| Agnes Grey (Oxford World's Classics) | ||
![]() | "Adorable" | 1998-12-29 |
| It is unfortunate that one is unable to enjoy this book without comparing it to Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights; however, it holds it own beauty. I was delighted with the baby sitting scenes and found myself laughing with the narrator, and also feeling all of her pain and anguish. She's "lighter" than her sisters and the ending reminds me a little of a Jane Austen novel. I may even compare her to Louisa May Alcott. I was pleasantly surprised. | ||
