I had never seen (or even heard of!) this series before happening upon it on Amazon. I was a bit leery to try it because of the reviews I've seen by most Anglophiles (lovers of English culture) here on Amazon. They all seem to think that Black Adder and Fawlty Towers are the best of British comedy and I cannot STAND those two series. Personally I am an Allo Allo/Keeping Up Appearances/Mr. Bean/To The Manor Born/The Piglet Files/The Good Life (called Good Neighbors in America) kind of person and those two particular comedies get on my nerves in the worst way.

That being said, I weighed the risks carefully in trying this but the price suddenly became right and I took a chance. I wouldn't have lost too much if I did. The verdict: this series is surprisingly good. There are some dry non-funny bits and I compared it a bit to Kate and Allie in a way - interesting to watch but only a laugh here and there. The really funny bits are totally hilarious though. My favourite episodes are a toss up between The Patient (guest starring Penelope Keith who I adore) and Robert's Mother; and The Patient just slightly wins this one because of this amazingly funny scene when Robert is being examined by an Indian doctor and Dorothy keeps asking Robert, "What did he say? What did he say?" Very reminiscent of Harry McCool (Cool McCool's dad). So I was completely cracking up partly because of that memory. Kurt A Johnson's review is pretty accurate on the episode descriptions.

This is just a basic DVD with no extras. The menu is short and sweet. You have the option to Play All or Play by Episode and you also get the Cast Filmography. I suppose you can call that an "extra" if you're really desperate :) You just get episodes 1 to 6. The video is pretty clear for something that's been filmed in the 70's, and the soundtrack is generally clear although there are some times when the sound dips down so you can hardly hear what the characters are saying and then raises again back to normal level. Odd, but I guess it's built into the DVD...i.e. nothing to do with the player. Also this set is NOT LABELLED as closed captioned, neither does it have subtitles. It seems to be fullscreen to me and NOT widescreen as the product description states. The theme song's pretty atrocious but I guess you can chalk it up to "charm" if you so desire. Other than that, no complaints. I'm happy I took the chance on this and am just going to pick up the second series to see if it's as hilarious as the first.

Now leesten carefully, I shall say this only once....It still can't touch Allo Allo though. THAT is my favourite Britcom of ALL time!

The Essential Calvin and HobbesThe Essential Calvin and Hobbes
Rated 4 Stars"Calvin looks a little different in this one" 2007-06-02
This collection contains earlier C&H cartoons. Being accustomed to seeing a slightly different looking Calvin in the more modern works it takes a little getting used to. His head is HUGE! His mouth...HUGE...and also very much like those Peanuts characters. The way his body and feet are drawn is also like them. Maybe they were Watterson's inspiration? Aside from the bigger head and mouth, Calvin in drawn shorter and wider than we are accustomed to and Hobbes is also bigger than him (when he is a stuffed tiger) which makes Calvin look even smaller. I thought at first that he was four or five but then he refers to himself as a six year old so that hasn't changed. I'm guessing that Watterson refined his craft in the years following...after all, this was originally published in 1988!!!

In this collection we see:
Calvin meets Hobbes
Calvin meets Susie...and does some serious flirting???
Calvin goes to the doctor and lives to tell the tale
His mom lets him try smoking
Shrunken heads for dinner anyone?
Calvin vs Rosalyn...who wins?

Many, many more memorable episodes in this collection that will keep you coming back for more!

CAUTION!!: When the information said "Includes cartoons from Calvin & Hobbes and Something Under the Bed is Drooling" I was under the impression that it contained just a few of those. Not so! It actually COMBINES those 2 books so that ALL of those cartoons are contained herein. I learned this because I ordered this together with Calvin & Hobbes...I am assuming it will be like this for other collections as well.

The Calvin & Hobbes Lazy Sunday BookThe Calvin & Hobbes Lazy Sunday Book
Rated 5 Stars"Calvin the imaginative" 2007-05-27
This collection takes place mostly in summer/fall and the theme is around lazy days and Sundays as well. My favourite panel in this collection is when Susie and Calvin are playing house and begins: S: "Darlinggg, I'm home! And I brought a surprise!" C: "Let's hope it's a divorce!" I still go off into spurts of laughter at that one... **LOL** Enjoy (in full page and full colour) the adventures of Spaceman Spiff to a max here. There is also a lot of "pouncing" which I thought would have been more appropriate in Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat but....nevertheless 5 stars for a great strip that never gets tired!

Rated 5 Stars"Typical Calvin" 2007-05-27
This collection takes place mostly in winter/spring/summer and is not themed (as you would think) along the lines of Hobbes "pouncing" which made me hesitate to purchase it at first because I wasn't that keen on all that pouncing. If you are into that aspect of C&H, however, you can get the C&H Lazy Sunday Book Collection. This one DOES however contain a lot of his priceless snowman sculptures which I AB-SO-LOUTELY LOVE, a great deal of interation with Susie, and escapades in Miss Wormwood's class. 5 *s for another fantastic collection!

The Magical Household: Spells & Rituals for the HomeThe Magical Household: Spells & Rituals for the Home
Rated 5 Stars"Definitely interesting" 2007-05-07
Filled with history, folklore and bits of information that are also useful today in modern times, it's easy to like this little gem. The 'chants' seem a bit stilted but I think it gives the book a bit of that old world charm. Overall it's a keeper and something I refer to from time to time (especially when moving house!) Not only for those who practice alternative religions.

Rawsome!: Maximizing Health, Energy, and Culinary Delight With the Raw Foods DietRawsome!: Maximizing Health, Energy, and Culinary Delight With the Raw Foods Diet
Rated 4 Stars"Very good for Raw Beginners" 2007-05-02
This is my first Raw title and I quite enjoyed it! It lays out information in an easy to follow structure and the content was very informative. She gives an account of her personal experience followed by what raw living is and isn't, reasons to go raw, how to equip your raw kitchen, eating with your family and friends etc. A lot of this info is very useful. The encyclopedia would be good for those who don't know a lot about the foods around them. Luckily I have a copy of the Doctor's Book of Food Remedies which is very comprehensive and it also tallies with what I have read in this book although this book adds some that I wasn't familiar with. I have not tried any of the recipes as yet (time constraints) but I HAVE read through all of them. Most of the ingredients seemed very accessible until I got to two of the recipes in the dessert section which called for 'agar flakes'... ??? Needless to say a more experienced raw foodist would know what they are and where to find them. If you have no clue you could just omit them or nix those recipes from your experiment list :)

I like that she gives little tips throughout the book like what to use in place of rice, variations on flax crackers, sandwich ideas etc. I also love that in her recipes she tells you the shelf/fridge life of the products and where the best place is to store some of them.

If the book is so great why did you minus a star?? - 1. Many of the recipes call for tahini and although it may be readily available to a lot of people, I have found some very simple recipes online for it so it would have been useful to include a recipe here in the book for those who would have found this product unable to obtain or who would prefer to make their own at home 2. A LOT of the recipes contain salt (which to be fair can be omitted) and since I haven't used salt since the early 90s, it's something I noticed especially. Instead of salt I flavour my food with fresh minced garlic, onion and chives which salt sensitve individuals can try. (This can possibly be dried and stored but I've never tried it so can't say how that works) 3. A lot of recipes call for Nama Shoyu which again may not be accessible to everyone so an alternative seasoning could be provided.

On the whole I'm glad I purchased the title and would definitely recommend it to anyone who's interested in purchasing.

Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary PractitionerWicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner
Rated 5 Stars"Fantastic!!!" 2000-11-23
Blessed be!! This is a great book for both Wiccan and non-Wiccan people. It is one of the first that I had read when I decided to follow the path, and is still one of the best. Cunningham packs a wealth of information into this book and his simple style is very easy and free-flowing. Even though I have decided not to follow Wicca, I have no problem highly recommending this book. It got me started on the folk magic path, practicing both runic and candle magic. A MUST for every home!!!
