Rated 3 Stars"A little less than the 2nd." 2008-08-30
(***). Enjoyed this one, but not as quite as much previous one. There were a couple places where I wish they had developed things a bit more. Aaron Winslow almost showing up again. The ending also seemed a bit anti-climatic.

I had seen some of the movies based on Parker's Jesse Stone, but this was the first book of his I read. I really enjoyed it. While it was a novel, I enjoyed it being based around real people like Jackie Robinson. I really enjoyed the way Parker revealed and developed Burke's character. I was a little surprised by the amount bedroom time for a book about baseball.

The Adirondacks: A History of America's First WildernessThe Adirondacks: A History of America's First Wilderness
Rated 4 Stars"If you love the Park, you'll appreciate the book" 2008-08-30
I started this a few years ago and set it aside. I finished it up recently. It was well written and covered so much of the history in a way that wasn't just names and dates. I enjoyed how it interleaved some interviews and other approaches to presenting the information.

2nd Chance2nd Chance
Rated 4 Stars"Balanced" 2008-06-28
Picked this up for another trip to Europe and eagerly finished it. I continue to enjoy the interplay of the four women. I do wish that Jill's character was developed just a little more. There were a few pieces that even after finishing confuse me, but perhaps that's part of the mystery. I'm curious to see if the Aaron Winslow character continues in the series.

Rated 4 Stars"Another Cork O'Connor Mystery with a Look at Faith" 2008-06-28
Another Corcoran O'Connor book that I enjoyed. Same good character development and relationships between characters. There was a stronger element of looking at faith in this book, an interesting change.

Purgatory Ridge (Cork O'Connor Mysteries)Purgatory Ridge (Cork O'Connor Mysteries)
Rated 4 Stars"Fast read, Good Characters," 2008-03-09
Another Corcoran O'Connor book and a very good one. The number of characters seemed a little more manageable in this one, in terms of allowing them each to be developed. I liked the strength brought out in women and children in Purgatory Ridge. I also liked some of the twists in the book that I really didn't see coming.

Neither Here nor There: Travels in EuropeNeither Here nor There: Travels in Europe
Rated 3 Stars"<< Walk in the Woods" 2008-02-02
I really did laugh out loud at times. Bryson tells of travels in Europe both of recent times and flashbacks to a trip through Europe when he was younger. I especially enjoyed the parts on places of Europe that I have visited myself. I was a little disappointed there wasn't much time spent in Germany. In this book, Bryson seems to try and get laughs at the expense of people. I had to knock off a star for that.

Boundary Waters (Mysteries & Horror)Boundary Waters (Mysteries & Horror)
Rated 4 Stars"Good Read" 2008-02-02
This is the second book in the Corcoran O'Connor series. I enjoy the character development, not just of Cork and his family, but of the other characters. I had hoped for a little more on Stormy, but with the large number of characters, it would have been difficult to get too deep with all of them.

Rated 3 Stars"A little Predictable" 2007-11-25
This is first in the Corcoran O'Connor series. Since I've read some of the books out of order, I was a little confused or bewildered about how things are different in Cork's life. A good read, good character twists, a little predictable at times which kept it from getting more stars. If you like Hillerman mysteries, you should like this series also.

Four Blind MiceFour Blind Mice
Rated 3 Stars"Good, but with some inconsistencies" 2007-04-07
I picked this up at an airport before an international flight. I've read a few Patterson books recently. This was not quite as good as some of the others. Part of the problem might have been me reading them out of chronological order (this is another Alex Cross book). I didn't really care for the ending. There also seemed to be some technical and story inconsistencies.

A Painted HouseA Painted House
Rated 3 Stars"Great characters, A little slow" 2007-03-10
This book was a Christmas gift. I had set my expectations based on movies from Grisham novels. This was a good read, but didn't have the same suspense as I expected. I really enjoyed the book being written from a seven year old's perspective. The characters were very well developed and unique. I liked that.

Very well done. The character developments and the shift to different ones across episodes kept it fresh.

Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo JimaFlags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima
Rated 4 Stars"So glad I read it" 2005-12-28
A very good read. Reasons I enjoyed it: The mystery of unwraveling the people in the picture; The reality of war; the redefinition of hero; and a son's finding his father.

Ramona: A Story (Signet Classics (Paperback))Ramona: A Story (Signet Classics (Paperback))
Rated 4 Stars"Not my typical book, but enjoyed it" 2005-12-27
I heard about the book while hiking at Seven Falls near Colorado Springs. HHJ was suppose to have gone to the overlook there to write, including parts of Ramona. This intrigued me and so I checked it out. I don't read much non-fiction, so I enjoyed the idea of a history based novel. It was enough of a love story for me to earn points with female friends, but enough of an adventure to keep me interested. One part of the book that I found distracting was the attempt at phonetic spelling of the Tennessee drawl of a few characters. I had the hardest time reading that, which perhaps is an excellent way of HHJ to capture the difficulty of listening to it.
