EA Sports Active Personal Trainer [Wii]EA Sports Active Personal Trainer [Wii]
Rated 5 Stars"Fun, Motivating, and a Good Workout" 2009-10-25
I'm glad I gave this product a shot. I have been using it for a week now, and I must say that the workouts make me sore in a good way. I can tell they are effective. I think I may get a more challenging band for certain upper body exercises, but the lower body workout is solid.

Unlike the Wii Fit, Active has a human trainer who guides you PIP, while you watch your avatar workout. There are also some pretty useful video demonstrations for each exercise. There are enough different exercises that you don't get bored. I'm doing the 30-day Challenge, and I like how it alternates muscle groups so you can work out everyday, but you're working different muscles. It's like having a personal trainer, in many ways. I love the trainer, actually. She sounds like she's planned special work-outs for me and she makes them sound so fun that I get excited about working out.

Here's an example of how this game makes a boring but effective move fun. Jump-ups from a squatting position are hard, exhausting, tedious, and make me want to throw in the towel after about 3 jumps, but with Wii Active, I'm not just squatting and jumping, I'm in-line skating (squats make you go faster) and jumping off ramps (jump up with a controlled finish). It's so much fun to watch my avatar on the screen that I forget that I'm doing squat-jumps. I actually look forward to them. I know they still work because I'm sore the next day in all the right places.

I don't love all the exercises, but you aren't doing each one for too long, so I can hang in there for 12 reps.

I generally work out at the gym, but with Wii Active I can get a gym quality workout at home in less time, plus no driving or gym attitude. If you have a Wii Balance Board, you can use it for activities such as kick boxing and inline skating lunges. I'm sure there are more, but the game paces you so you are constantly getting to try new moves.

I think you could probably cheat on some of the moves by manipulating the sensors, but why would you want to?

The book's authors keep their sassy _sex_in_the_city_ tone throughout, but unless you're a denizon on manhatten, I'm not sure how useful this book can actually be. Maybe I'm not glamourous enough for this book. I suppose it did make me strive for more glamour in my life, but when I set the book down and realized my fully suburban existence, the book came up short with truly translatable wisdom. A cute gift for a gal just leaving college. At 28, I was far too aged for this one.
