| Brother MFC-465cn Color Inkjet Multi-Function Center with Networking | ||
![]() | "Empty color ink halts all productivity - even black & white prints" | 2009-07-30 |
| There are two fundamentally irritating things about this device. Number one, printing over the network requires the printer to be powered on. This means that if you are in another room, you have to first get up and walk over to the printer and turn it on, then walk back to the PC to print your documents, and finally return to the printer again and scoop up your stuff. This really stinks if the printer is located on another floor of the house. I had a cheap HP printer that turned itself on whenever a print job was assigned to it. This printer with all its bell & whistles cannot. Number two; the printer will stop whatever it is doing whenever a single ink cartridge is empty. Even if you are printing black & white or grayscale, if magenta is empty, you are out of luck. This recently put my wife in a bind when she was up all night printing for her class and a color went out. We had back-up black ink in a drawer, but forget it. No more printing for an important project until we took an emergency trip to Staples the next morning. Terrible, especially when Brother ink cartridges are not sold everywhere. I offer a quote from the Brother trouble-shooting webpage: Q: Can I print using only the black ink cartridge when the Color cartridges have run out? A: No, your Brother machine is designed to stop ALL printing operations when any of the ink cartridges are empty. This is to ensure the life of the print head and maintain premium print quality. If the unit were to continue printing, print jobs and cleaning cycles would suck air from the empty cartridge and damage the print head. The only way to continue printing is to replace the empty ink cartridge(s). It is unfortunate and inconvenient that I need to purchase expensive color ink cartridges for my primary purpose of printing black & white text documents. | ||
![]() | Sony PlayStation 3 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 Pack | |
![]() | "This system has a lot of features." | 2009-07-07 |
| When deciding about what blu-ray player to buy, the Playsation 3 was an obvious choice to me because this particular version is backwards compatible with my PS1 and PS2 games. I have limited space, so the idea of retiring my Playstation 2 without losing games sounded great. After using the Playstation 3 for a little over a year now, the console has been great. Ive never been able to enjoy a console quite like the Playstation 3. Here are some of the things I like about it: - This console has really become my media center. Ive enjoyed playing back (with the separate remote) a huge portion of my music library, wedding photos, and honeymoon photos, onto this thing. Using either one of the USB ports or one of many card readers to load media onto the Playstation 3 is a breeze. - Im enjoying playing for free online - something I was accustomed to only on my PC, which is seeing age. - The Playstation Network is easy to browse for free game demos and videos. The majority of my hard drive is full of demos right now. - The bluetooth controller is great and is the same feel-good shape of the PS2 controller. - Being able to play my old library of games was great. I think the backwards compatibility of the PS2 is what helped sell a lot of those consoles and give the Xbox a run for its money. To me, Sony is thanking its loyal customers by having this feature. Unlike, for example, when the Super Nintendo would not play regular Nintendo games. They could have made the cartidges a similar shape and chose not to. I wanted both a Blu-Ray player and a gaming system to play gems like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The price is acceptable because I would have purchased two separate pieces of hardware and probably paid more if the technology was not already included in the PS3. Throw in a game like Metal Gear 4 and this is a solid buy. | ||
| SanDisk 1 GB Cruzer Micro with U3 | ||
![]() | "Great tool, great price" | 2008-11-14 |
| I love this product. The retractable design is slick looking and fun to use. The device is protected enough to have stood through constantly being thrown into a book bag along with keys, coins, etc. The U3 software is there to protect your data in case you leave the flash drive sitting out somewhere, although you can opt not to use it and/or remove it altogether if you want to take the chance. For the price of flash now, this item should be a staple for any student or office worker because the price/storage ratio is perfect. While there are other Sandisk flash drives out there now that can hold 16G or more, the little 1G is more than enough for all my stuff. | ||

| Sid Meier's Civilization IV | ||
![]() | "One of the best games ever!" | 2008-08-02 |
| I purchased this game when it first game out, having anticipated its release. I was first impressed with the quite thick game manual. While useful, new players will not require reading through the entire thing as the game is fairly easy to jump into and start playing around. I can only describe the game to newcomers that the play style is similar to that of a Sim-City type game. The new mechanics added in not only each civilization (America, Germany, etc), but also each ruler (Roosevelt, Washington, Otto Von Bismark, etc) grant bonuses and change how the game will unfold. The beauty of the game is that it is never the same each time you play it. Not to mention, I have a blast playing this game over a direct IP connection with a friend where we play cooperatively at first then proceed to conquer each other at the end. The Civilization games were always very addicting and this may be one of the hardest games to tear yourself away from. You will always want to play for a few more turns, and then something else interesting will happen. Before you know it, the clock reads 5:00am! As a side note, I really appreciated the Civilopedia included in the game. Between turns or whenever, you can read a bit of real-world history on any of the technologies, civilization, super buildings, units, and wonders. And they have Leonard Nimoy as the narrator for the game. I plan to never get rid of this timeless game. | ||
| XIII - Windows | ||
![]() | "Not a bad bargain title. 3&1/2 stars." | 2005-12-22 |
| For a bargain basement price, XIII is a great action packed shooter. Based on a comic book, this game has a unique "cell shaded" appearance that looks and plays just like the player is acting out a comic book. Your screen will pop up little picture-in-picture slow motion images of your foes taking a knife to the head or otherwise stealth fully taken out. Often you will see mini action sequences play out in the little screen that may alert you to baddies around, show conversations while your main field of vision is focused on what is going on in front of you, or even show close-ups of your enemies falling to their death so you will definitely appreciate that comic book feel. The cell shaded look is also very well done and easy to look at, as it is based off of the Unreal 2 graphics engine. While those graphics are slightly outdated by today's standards, for what its worth, the cell shaded characters and world look quite unique. The story involves you as a nameless character who wakes up with only some vague memories and XIII tattooed on your arm, but is otherwise plagued with amnesia. You are rescued by a life guard and soon ambushed by murderous thugs who seem to be looking specifically for you. The games story takes you along a path to find out who you are and why these thugs and armed men want you dead. Later, you will be directly involved with ending whatever evil plans they have and blowing a lot of them up in the process. The game is rather linear, but you will have the choice to use stealth to eliminate your opponents or run in there guns blazing and picking up health packs. As you regain your memory, you will also start to regain knowledge of super abilities you once had. This usually involves you talking to then fighting a boss you recognize and having access to an innate ability on the next level. These abilities range from one hit knockout hand chops, steady hand sniping, super fast lock picking, med kit prowess, and other skills. The best is probably the silent walk skill because before you obtain that, all enemies can hear you walking up behind them which makes the one hit handchop knockout skill worthless until you can get behind the enemy to use it. The game will encourage stealth by letting you creep up and snag guards from behind and either use them as hostages to keep from getting shot at and the ability to drag bodies around and hide them. Guards will patrol areas and find your bodies and raise alarms, so hiding them is key. You will get your standard shooter line-up of weapons to dispose upon your many enemies who are mostly nameless thugs or renegade military types. Most of the weapons feel very underpowered with the exception of the cross bow. The cross bow is like a sniper rifle that makes zero noise and almost always kills with one hit, especially if you can hit someone in the head or neck. The sniper rifle isnt much more powerful and causes alarms to sound. Enemies will react to other weapons as if you were spraying them with a garden hose. They will stand there getting pumped with lead, pouring blood on the floor and aimlessly firing back at you before eventually falling down in a heap even if you are shooting them with an AK-47. That is unless you pick up a throwing knife and throw that into their face. You will get a one-hit kill for that and can knock them out if you break a chair or brick over someones head. The game was fun to play and is worth playing twice or maybe 1 1/2 times just to see some of the mystery you may have missed. Otherwise the game play is more or less standard shooter fare with an interesting look and David Duchovney's voice. It would have felt more satisfying to play if the weapons felt like they packed more of a punch or affected the enemies more. I don't need more damage, just more of an indication that my enemies are taking my hits or reacting to getting shot. You will use the crossbow the most and love it. On the plus side, it does have some multiplayer deathmatch and a few other options to play with however there are no servers anymore. Feel free to enjoy the bots the game offers. They are always average in their level of AI, but if you turn up the difficulty they are more accurate and jump around more. This game scores on many levels while missing on a few things. The save system is lacking. The cutscenese were not skippable. The game is linear. It has limited replayability if you dont care about botmatch. The ending contains a clifhanger. | ||

![]() | "You will surely want to continue the whole trilogy." | 2004-04-03 |
| This book was everything I expected. I was really looking for a humorous sci-fi action packed trip and I was not disappointed at all. Reading this book was similar to the experience I got from the movie Men In Black. The Guide is similar in the way it depicts the univers as simply a zany place to be, full of action and swashbuckling adventure interspersed with a funny undertone. Ive read books before that followed this sort of humourous angle, but mostly turned out to be silly. The Hitchhiker's Guide may not have the most developed characters, but it has a unique charm that draws you into the action and keeps you there with a laugh and leaves you with a cliffhanger ending. The best time to read this book is right after you've just read something overly serious, epic, boring, or studious. Another book I would recommend that has this same similar sci-fi/humor relationship is a book by Piers Anthony called Prostho Plus. Pick up this book, but consider investing in the novel that encompasses all three books in the trilogy. Surely, if you only read this one, you will want more. | ||

![]() | "Just a pile of distortion and the same creepy vocals" | 2003-11-11 |
| I have been a fan of VAC for some time. Their last few albums have been great. This latest CD seems very difficult to listen to as it just sounds like they went overboard with the distortion. The combined exhausting vocals that try so hard to be dark and scary, but are so overdone, end up sounding like static no matter what volume or settings I listen to it at. Shamefully, only one or two songs on this CD stood out to me, compared to their earlier works that all sounded pretty good. The rest just fades away into a noisy hodgepodge of screeching garbage. The vocals are unintelligible, which isn't such a big deal (who pays attention to the words anyway with this music) but the echo effect and guttural ranting gets old way too fast. Add so much distorted noise that you can barely appreciate what music lies beneath the mess, you get a CD that sounds damaged when in fact it is just the noise you just paid for. | ||

![]() | "Mulitplayer is the basis of this game" | 2003-10-05 |
| I cant stress that enough. The single player campaign is just filler for what is offered when you play online. I havent even played 5 whole missions in single player even though i have owned this game for months. The sinlge player game is fun, but can be tedious when trying to coordinate a mission plan that wont kill your team AI. They tend to get themselves shot when you arent managing them directly. The multiplayer part of this game is so addictive, its insane. THis is some of the best cooperative play I have ever experienced. Of course a deathmatch or team-deathmatch style is offered, cooperative is my favorite. There are other game types as well, including hostage resues, bomb disarmings, and escorts where the other team has to prevent a pilots escape and sometimes YOU are the pilot. All in all, taking out terrorists with online pals is the most rewarding. The game has an excellent interface that automatically downloads new maps, textures, and sounds when you join a new server that is playing a new map. Its so easy to use. If youre not into multiplayer or have a bad internet connection, perhaps this title isnt for you. If you think you will really enjoy the single player game or have tried the multiplayer demo and loved it, get this game. Take out some tangos with some friends online. Dont have any friends online? You end up making pals when you join the same couple servers every day and keep seeing the same people. Its very social and ther are rarely any creeps playing cooperatively. I would have given a 4 and a half because the single player isnt quite as engrossing as the mulitplayer. | ||

![]() | "Could have been so much better" | 2003-09-21 |
| This game was simply a waste of potential. I am glad I rented this game first,because after completion, I had no further desire to play it again. This game portrays the vampire sub-culture in a very cool way. The story was entertaining, but the voice acting is where the game really shines. I sometimes want to play the game again just because of the great dialog. UInfortunately the gameplay is terrible. You fight with the same couple moves EACH time you get into a battle. Punch, punch, grab, throw. Unless you have a weapon then expect chop, chop, big chop. The only thing that adds diversity in the monotonous fighting is the few vampire ablilities you can use. Even then, its still going to be the same silly fight after you use one of your abilities. They would be better off making a really intriging movie from this series, because the game itself offers nothing but linear gameplay and tedious fighting, puntuated with wonderful dialog and great voice acting. Keep the directors and actors, fire the game developing team. | ||
| Deus Ex | ||
![]() | "A timeless classic" | 2003-08-04 |
| Deus Ex won game of the year so many times, its not even funny anymore. This game is several years old and is still ground-breaking in many ways. In fact, Deus Ex is by far better than many of the more modern First Person Shooter games that are being released or have been released after Deus Ex. I say this because, although the graphics are dated they still look good, but the gameplay is incredible. The story is engrossing. The game is long and will occupy plenty of game hours, more so than some of the new games that are being churned out. There are multiple endings coupled with some great, non-linear gameplay. There are Role playing elements involved in which you can basically grow and gain higher skills. There are often mulitple ways to accomplish any given goal, which gives the game added replay value. Pros: lengthy gmae offers many game hours to play multiple endings and non linear play adds replay value story is engossing music puts you in the characters boots Multiplayer was aadded by a great developer team for free CONS: | ||

| I am a college student and recieved this printer for Christmas. I have been satisfied with the quality of the prints, but even more so with the speed of the printing. Pages fly through this printer and come out looking pretty good. It generates less noise than some other printers I have seen. I have nothing but good things to say about the easy installation and flawless performance. | ||

![]() | "review was inaccurate" | 2003-04-28 |
| I recently purchased this first person shooter expecting more of the same run and gun type of action found in dozens of other games. (I lied. I played the demo to death while waiting for this.) After playing the playstation 2 version, I didnt expect much. When I finally played the PC version I was literally blown away. When I seen the depth of the game I knew I had to buy it. The demo was the most used program on my computer for months. Now the full game is in my posession and I love it. The PC version is actually a completely different game. The missions are different as is the character you play. Obviously the game in general is far better than the console version. True, the game has no blood or gratuitous amounts of fleshy, dripping, guts, but the game has style. You will learn that other games with gallons of bright red liquid gushing from enemies when you shoot them is rediculous anyway. There are other means of telling when youve scored a hit like sound and slick model animations. Also, the graphics are great. You can hide out in rubble or lush leafy bushes. The sound is the best. You can tell where your enemies are by listening for them (you may need a better sound card to support the enviromental audio, but they arent that pricey). I swear that in multiplayer, I have hunted my friends down by listening to thier boots jogging on the ground. You can always tell where stuff in the game is by litening to it. You may have to creep with some stealth sometimes, but it all adds to the game. The review stated that the multiplayer is average at best. The reviewer clearly has to be talking about another game. This was a mistake, because in my opinion, MOHAA has the best mutliplayer. It adds the intelectual factor of Ravenshield with a faster paced game. All of the maps are wonderfully thought out. Even the smallest, forgotten nooks and crannies, that seem like developers accidents are purposely put in the level for the advantage of whomever hides in there. There are little spots under rubble or in bushes. There are so many places to hide out and yet there is never a break in the action. The maps can be kind of large, but can be played with few or many people. The game tpyes are fun and have much variety. You will love the sinlge player Omaha beach invasion and you get to recreate that online. The multiplayer is not sub-standard. In fact, it has to be the most fun FPS deathmatch or teambased game ive played. This game is so well done, it make many of the games out today look like garbage. The funny thing is: I dont even like EA Games after being dissapointed with several of their other titles. Buy this game. If there is anything you will get out of it for sure, it is a sense of appreciation for the most horroble war of all time. You will feel the emotion in this game. You will feel like you are part of the raw battles of WWII, making adifference. After playing this game you will run out and watch Saving Private Ryan. You may also feel the need to research some history on the war. It makes you feel. Check it out. | ||

![]() | "Frustratingly bad AI, but all else is fair and good" | 2003-04-20 |
| This game frustrates me. Games are not supposed to do that. I like a challenge but I have noticed that the poor intelligence of the individual units, combined with the horribly clunky interface makes for a frustratingly frantic click-fest. The units will make poor decisions on when they attack the enemy for example; you might order your fleet of tanks to move to a location, but when they get attacked, the tanks will usually ignore them and wait for you to tell them what to do. In long games with many tasks to handle at once, this gets annoying, and you will end up losing whole armies because your units wont fight back on their own, instead they sit their idle. In some cases, your supply gatherers will be under fire, but instead of retreating, they continue their routes and ultimately explode. The worst thing is that the game wont warn you when your units are attacked or taking damage, only your buildings. You only know that you are attacked when you lose a unit. By that time you are toast anyway. You have to keep an eye on an impossibly small area map that will give you one small red radar "blip" when you are attacked. If you fail to see that, you fail to come out without casualties. Giving commands to units is like pulling teeth. You cannot have units patrol an area like you can in the Starcraft or Warcraft games. You can only have units guard and area, in which case they will simply sit idle and take fire, only returning fire when the enemy is within range. This is laughable. Setting waypoints for units is also clunky. One more thing really irritated me. My buddy had a stealth unit in my base setting demolition charges on my buildings. One by one they exploded, but I had no idea that my base was being destroyed because I was too busy micromanaging my dopey units somewhere else. I didnt even know what was going on until I tried to select my jets, but they were not selecting. Thats when I looked over to the airbase to see why and realized that my base was 80% ashes and debris. There were no warnings or anything. Its that lack of game polish that is making me sell this game. Otherwise the graphics, sound, and overall funfactor are all good. Its fun to play on the LAN, but still frustrating. I know my way around this game well and still yell at the screen, telling my stupid units to move. It is this fact that takes away from the strategic element and turns this game into a finger aching click-fest. Whoever can build the most units in a given time will win, hands down. I enjoy anything from Blizzard much more. If this game simply used Blizzards RTS interface, it would really shine, but since your options are limited and so is the intelligence of your units, you are out of luck and expect to be screaming at your monitor more that once. Three and a half stars is accurate | ||

![]() | "Made no sense" | 2003-04-20 |
| This book made no sense to me when I read it. I dug into the book knowing it was mostly going to be hallucinogenic ramblings and stuff, but there was no real plot to speak of. The writing was all over the place, sometimes telling a vague story of how law enforcement was after them for drug trafficking and then suddenly drifting into random nonsense and bloated symbolism. I kept wishing the author would come out of the stoned stupor the whole book felt like it was written in and actually continue with the half-way interesting escape from the law plot, but it kept making less and less sense that I could not ever see picking it up again to give it a second try. | ||

| I was really getting an itch to play this game after seeing it in a magazine article. Being a big fan of the old contra games, I tried to find it for rent before I made a purchase. Unfortunately, no place had it available so I bought it on Amazon.com for a modest price(less than most retail). It was fun, but and very chalenging. The graphics, sound, everything were good. The only thing that was missing was the need to play it again. I wish I would have rented this. After a week you will be sorry you didnt purchase something else that will stay in your playstation longer. | ||

![]() | "This game is to this day still one of my favorites!" | 2003-03-24 |
| This is a game that is fun anytime. I found the single player game a total blast o rama. It is non stop action. Ive played so many first person shooters and this game set the standard for sure. The develpers and producers have since release tons of official extras for this game to double the replay value. They have added downloadable map packs with new music, character models, voices, and freshness! Even with all the new fancy games out, I still end up playing this all the time. My freinds all love it too and that is where the game really shines: mulitplayer. Take this game online. If you dont have the featured map(there are zillions made by fans) then the game downloads it for you right before you start blasting! It's fool proof. 100% action I already bought two copies back in the day for full price, which I never do. It was that good and worth it to buy it again after losing the fisrt copy. Like I said, I never pay full retail for games, but this one was an excellent exception. | ||

| This game is very addicting. I played this through before I checked out the mulitplayer option on Battle.net. That was a whole new experience. There are people trading items from the game, fighting together, killing each other. Its fantastic! Then I bought the expansion pack and realized how well my money was spent. The expansion was soo worth the money giving you better screen resolution, TONS of new items and options, two new character classes, a new HUGE chapter, and some more cinematics. BLizzard didnt skimp when it came to developing what players wanted- MORE DIABLO!! They certainly stuffed the expansion with goodies. BLizzard never lets you down. | ||
| Tenchu Stealth Assassins | ||
![]() | "I bought this game twice!" | 2003-02-09 |
| I actually did purchase this game two times. I lent it out some years ago and never got it back. I recently noticed that the price is very modest so I picked it up again. Why? This game is an older generation game (PS1), but it is better than some PS2 games I have played that only advertise graphics but have poor gameplay or short game time. Tenchu is a satisfying game that lets you creep around, slice necks from behind, and hide out on rooftops. You will avenge the death of a crooked merchant, rescue a captive nijna, save a princess, destroy a fiendish cult, stop the spanish pirates, and fight a big boss with a bigger sword. Of course there are those who opppose this type of activity and thus will try to stop you. Its lots of fun running around, hiding, killing from the unseen. Its better while doing it while the great game soundtrack is playing. This game has very catchy music that brings you you right in. The graphics, like I said, are mediocre, but that wont make or break a game anyway. Gameplay makes the game and this game has plently. Plenty of enemies to defeat, two selectable characters, a bunch of ninja items to utilize, and the percect amount of levels. What isnt so good about the game? Each ninja only has a small amount of stealth kills to use. There are plenty of regular attacks to be diverse but only 3 stealthy kills. One kill is rarely used due to the fact that you have to be iun front of you r enemy to use it which is dangerous because he will see you. You usually do the neck slice (yawn). Another downside is that many of the ninja items you acuire will be useless. Since you can only carry 4, you will take ninja stars, bombs, paralyzing rice cakes, and the grapling hook. The others are junk or rare objects recieved as bonuses for completing the missions on a master ninja score. Again the graphics are dated. The enemy AI is a pretty stupid. You can run past an ememy warrior and duck behind a bush or tree and he wont know where you went. He will look around himself quick and resume his patrols, "Where are you!?" Its still a load of fun and can be a challenge at first to get a perfect rating and unlock secret items. Replay value is pretty darn good. You might get tired of it after beating it with both ninjas, but you will get a taste for it some time later. This game will not sit in a closet. Many PS2 games sit in my closet, but this dated PS1 game is in my PS2 right now. | ||
| Grand Theft Auto III - PlayStation 2 (PS2) | ||
![]() | "A good reason to think about owning a PS2." | 2002-12-02 |
| Fans of the original Grand Theft auto and Grand Theft auto:2 and the gamplay that surrounded those games will be dissapointed and delighted. The top-down, helicpoter viewpoint from the first two games has been revolutionized and revamped with stunning three dimentional graphics. This is truly a go anywhere, do anything game. You will find yourself roaming around the expansive city just exploring and sightseeing. When you get the urge to, you can comit a few crimes and get involved in high-speed chases that offer edge-of-your-seat action. The story of the game is there, but it's only purpose is to give you a reason for violent activity. It does it's job well, though and pulls the gamer through a wonderfully rendered and intelligent enviroment with special missions and various things to accomplish. | ||
| Baldur's Gate Original Saga with Tales of the Sword Coast Expansion Pack | ||
![]() | "This game smoked my social life!" | 2002-08-18 |
| I recently purchased this game with the expansion at the store for 20 bucks. For that price I couldnt go wrong, what with all the great reviews about it. I had a few problems after the installation with some "assertion errors" but the online troubleshooting sites helped me out. It turns out that the problem was mine, not the game's. Anyway, at first, I wasnt sure how much I would really like this game. I thought it might have the tendancy to drag on. Actually, I have put some time into it and now I am so engulfed with this game that I have been staying up until wee hours in the morning with it. Theres is always something to do, somewhere to explore, people to help out or kill. Theres so much going on that I have yet to even come close to the city of Baldurs Gate! Ive been content with traveling elsewhere. Thats part of the beauty of the game. The fact that it doesnt force you to do anything in any order or, like most games, force you to go to area A, find object B, kill Boss C, proceed to area Z, etc. I like the fact that I know there is trouble to the south in the mines, but I feel like hanging out in the hills, looking for an insane mage. Ill get to the mines later. Everytime this game is played it will be different depending on your choices. While im waiting for Baldurs gate2 to be shipped with the expansion, I might as well roll up a totally different character, play the game in a new sequence, and recruit the NPCs that I told to get lost the last time around. Ill take Brage to the Garrison of the Flaming Fist so they chop off his head and give me the bounty instead of giving him shelter in the church. In short, the game is fun. It has been making me decide to stay in on nights that I should have gone out with friends. I was disappointed that it had no paper manual, but 20 bucks for this game is well spent. The manual is on disk one anyway. | ||
