![]() | "Great Blu-Ray" | 2009-07-01 |
| I'm not sure there is any point in saying this is either a great or a boring movie. From the first day it opened in theaters, people were either on one side or the other. I think it takes re-viewings and some thought to appreciate it. If someone wants to just sit down, turn off their brain, and be entertained (nothing wrong with that) this is not the movie for them. If someone wants to appreciate this movie, I have two recommendations. #1-don't watch this on anything other than a widescreen TV (at least 42" but larger is better), prefererably Blu-Ray; this is a very visual movie and a lot is lost if you don't have the correct presentation #2-read the book or listen to the audiobook; the book filled in some gaps that helped me understand the movie. Again, if that is too much trouble, this probably isn't the movie for you. | ||

| Logitech mm50 Portable Speakers for iPod Black | ||
![]() | "Great little speakers" | 2008-04-17 |
| I got this for my daughter's new video iPod and the sound works very well. As someone noted before, it seems odd that they would not make room for the AC adapter/charging unit in the travel case since you would have to take it along for any trip, but that is the only complaint. I would recommend it to you. | ||
| iRobot 5900 Scooba Floor Washing Robotic Hard Surface Cleaner - White and Blue | ||
![]() | "Beware of the Scooba 5900 battery problem" | 2007-09-23 |
| Although my Scooba worked well when it was operating, after around 5 uses the battery failed. This, in itself, was not a problem as things can go wrong with anything. The problem is that I contacted iRobot 6 weeks ago and they have still not shipped me a replacement. They are on back order and iRobot says that it will be another two weeks. I would consider this pretty unacceptable, especially as their website says that they have them in stock. I asked about this and was told that new retail batteries and warrantee exchanges are separate. There has been a very high failure rate with batteries (they even have a dedicated phone menu item for battery problems) so the chances of you spending hundreds of dollars for one of these and then winding up with a doorstop for a couple of months are pretty high. | ||
| The Sopranos - The Complete Seasons 1 - 5 & Season 6, Part 1 (6-Pack) | ||
![]() | "Might want to wait" | 2007-06-14 |
| First, with DVDs you should be very careful of third party or eBay sellers of box sets like this for heavily discounted prices. Some of them are legitimate, but some of them are Chinese knockoffs with DVD9 discs cut down to DVD5 in non-retail packaging. That means they are illegal copies and the quality and completeness of the content (like special features) are lacking. It may be their website and you may have protection from Amazon after the fact, but don't mistake the third-party sellers with buying directly from Amazon.com and don't think that they have the capability to thoroughly screen these sellers before they get on the site. Again, I'm not talking about everyone, just look at the vendor reviews and ask some specific questions and get an answer before you buy. Second, you might want to wait on this one. The model with Six Feet Under was to offer a complete series package consisting of the individual series sets after the end for $379 list (although this is always discounted). About a year later they came out with a Gift set with special packaging with additional sound track CDs (this could be a good one for the Sopranos with their music) for $279 list and readily available for $200. The Sopranos had one additional long season so it will probably be more but that set might be the one to have. It also might be more fun to revisit the complete series a little more in the future. Just my 2 cents. | ||
| OPPO DV-970HD Up-Converting Universal DVD Player - Silver | ||
![]() | "Best DVD Player in this price range" | 2007-03-04 |
| First, the pricing on Amazon is a little misleading (list $199.99, price $149.99). List for this unit is $149.99. Second, the Oppo DV-970HD is worth every penny of the $149.99 list. It will play almost everything you can burn on a CD or DVD. The big plus for me was that you can load video or photo files on a thumb drive, plug it into the front USB port and view them off of that. Other high points: -Very good picture quality -A memory position save button (I believe for up to 40 DVDs) -Included HDMI cable -Volume control through the DVD player -direct 5.1 speaker connections -I know that it doesn't have anything to do with what you buy a DVD player for, but I love that it came wrapped in a rich looking cloth bag. -If you go to AVS Forum and the standalone DVD player section, you will find a whole thread dedicated to this one player-a big plus if you need help setting up or adjusting anything. I only have a 42" Panasonic EDTV (when I was in the market, 50" screens and HDTV were almost $800-900 more and I only watch DVDs) so I really can't judge the upconverting capabilities, but the home theater forums also speak highly of this player for watching 480i DVDs on up to 1080i sets. This was one of those times when I was looking for something and all the reviews,user comments, and my budget pointed to a single item, this was the one, and I have not been disappointed. Very highly recommended. Note: Don't bother looking for these in a bricks & morter store. I went into a home theater business and asked for an Oppo player and the salesman said that he hadn't even heard of Oppo until someone was in a half hour before me and asked for the same brand. | ||
| Peerless ST650P Tilting Wall Mount for 32" to 50" Flat Panel Displays | ||
![]() | "Great Plasma Wall Mount" | 2007-02-12 |
| I uploaded a picture of the actual mount you will receive if you order this from Amazon. I think that what Amazon is selling/shipping is a later version as I could not find anything among current models on the Peerless website that look like the Amazon picture. The current version looks like a simpler, but stronger mount as you are hooking up the TV closer to the wall. The earlier version might make it easier to shift the TV horizontally as it moves on a round bar, but that shouldn't be a big deal as I doubt I will be moving it much after the initial installation. I prefer a stronger mounting arrangement when it comes to a $2000 TV anyway. Like others, I found the mount easy to install with the included hardware and the recommended tools. I used a socket on the wall mount screws for the last 3/4" or so as they are pretty long and my drill stalled out. I was able to do it myself with a 42" plasma, but another person would have been nice; someone else would be mandatory for anything bigger. I'm very happy with the product and having my plasma on the wall as it really seemed to "open" up the room vs using the bottom mount and putting it on a table. The tilt feature gives a good viewing angle. Update-Amazon now has a current picture of the mount that you will receive if you buy this. | ||
| Cuisinart 15 Piece Cutlery Set | ||
![]() | "Great knife set!" | 2006-11-10 |
| I needed to replace my trusty and old set of Chicago Cutlery knives. These looked good and the silver and black would go with our kitchen. I like that the handles and the blade flow into each other making them easy to clean and without crevises between a wood handle and metal to catch food. It took a little while to get used to how light they are, so be prepared for that. Seem to stay sharp much longer than my old set. For some reason, I think I liked a wooden block better than the plastic with this set, but not a big deal. Overall, I'm very happy with these. | ||
| Samsung X495 Prepaid Phone (T-Mobile) | ||
![]() | "Very durable" | 2006-09-10 |
| I didn't have much to add to the other reviews but I did want to say that my wife accidently ran the X495 through a complete cycle in a washing machine. After drying it out with a hair dryer and letting it sit for a couple of hours we recharged it and it worked like new. I've had other phones that were dropped in water for a couple of seconds and didn't come out this well. I've noticed other reviews cover being dropped with no effect also. Probably a good phone for someone who is rough with these. | ||
| Sennheiser CX 300 In-Ear Headphones - Silver | ||
![]() | "Great earbuds" | 2006-08-25 |
| I wanted to post this in case anyone like me was wondering if they were better than the Sony MDR-EX71SLs and EX51LPs (that I had been using for years). I had thought the only alternatives were the $100+ ear canal units (the ones you cram in half-way to your brain) and tried the CX300S based on the reviews, the $40 price, and the fact the the fit was similar to the Sony's. First, let me say that I am not an audiophile; I've always been happy with average sound and have never been able to detect the finer points like others. These earbuds are definitely better than the Sony's and I could immediately notice the improvement-clarity, treble, bass, everything. I probably won't be able to use the Sonys for music anymore after these. I recommend the Sennheiser 300S's highly. | ||
| Black & Decker CHV1400 14.4-Volt Cyclonic DustBuster - white and green | ||
![]() | "Indispensable" | 2006-06-07 |
| We have a parrot, two cats, a dog, and a 12 year old and use this every day for seed, litter, hair, food crumbs, pencil shavings, etc. It may only last 12-15 minutes on a charge but that is enough for me to hit the trouble areas on the spot without hauling out the big vacuum. Even when I use a broom for the bigger areas on the hardwood floors, it is easier to use this to pick up the piles instead of chasing them all over with a dustpan. I use the crevise tool on my vacuum to clean the "accordian" filter and haven't had to replace it yet after a year. Highly recommended. | ||
