Having previously been very happy with a Tivoli radio in California, I needed another for my place here on Kaua`i. Since I am well over 100 miles from the big stations on Oahu, and 10 miles and a mountain range from everything local, I needed something good to actually work. I was not disappointed.

The FM reception is superb even with the included short wire antenna, and with the addition of an outside antenna, the reception is astounding, better than my car radio. I can hear the tiny 250 watt Hawaii Public Radio translator from 115 miles away on Oahu, and many of the commercial stations despite 90 miles of open ocean and a mountain in the way.

For the AM side, it is wonderful for the two semi-local stations (on the other side of the island), but I added a Terk AM Advantange antenna and I have no problem listening to the AM stations on Oahu and even Maui, over 190 miles away. It's easy to hear Japan, Indo-China and even Australia at night as well, even though I would rather not, as they tend to interfere with the local signals. I never thought this would be a problem, although I'm not complaining really, it's just very sensitive and selective.

As others have said, the FM frequency response is quite good for such a small speaker, the highs sparkle and the bass is alive and almost too good. It is a big sounding little box. The on/off switch that goes to AM and then FM is a minor thing, and does not bother me. I like the old-style slide rule dial (I'm old fashioned, I guess), as I can literally "tune in" a station. It does not drift, so the lack of digital lock is not a problem.

So, if you live in a rural place as I do, this radio will not let you down, and if you live in town, it picks up everything with little effort.

This one is a keeper.

Back in the 70's and 80's, I listened to a really great radio station, WSGS in Hazard, Kentucky. From my home in Flat Gap, Virginia, and anywhere in the region, it was well known that if you wanted real country music, you simply had to turn on WSGS. 100,000 watts of pure, monophonic country music. I'm not talking about the big hats of Nashville, or the gussied up ladies who pose as country singers these days. No, it was the real thing, including local and regional bluegrass, gospel, hiccup preachers, Loretta Lynn, Lefty Frizzel, Merle Haggard, Bill Monroe, Grandpa Jones, and countless others.
When I listen to this Pattly Loveless release, I think she must have been listening too. It sounds just like the typical afternoon group of selections on old WSGS. Only better, because Patty is from our time, and seems to have that old time, mountain shout-it-out style much like many of those who came before. She reminds me a bit of Wilma Lee Cooper. What a voice!
If you have never heard of these early country artists, and you like the way Patty does it up here, it would be good to go back and see where she learned all this great music from. This is the real thing.

I bought a pair of these for a local radio station. We installed them last fall (November 2004) and they run 24/7. The station uses these machines for overnight automation. We use the no delay feature for switching back and forth between machines, and it results in a very smooth and quick transition between songs.
So far, they have been flawless. We burn our own CDR's, and these machines are rack-mounted and powered by a UPS so there are no power surges or dropouts to mess things up.
After reading the other reviews, I am a bit worried that they may not hold up, but so far, they are working just fine. For us, the key is very clean CD's. Since we burn our own with high quality blanks, it has worked out fine for us.
