No exposed gear shift cables to accidentally activate brakes.

Only one flaw - while in lowest gear (largest rear cog) if you try to push chain to a larger rear cog (that doesn't exist) the mechanism will drop chain to smaller cog, a higher gear. This will only happen when you are struggling on a steep hill...

Rated 2 Stars"Untested software, very poor choice of display fonts" 2009-08-18
Wow, I'm usually pleased with Garmin products, but this is a real stinker.

On Mac Training Center the device is unable to load ride data into computer due to profile conflicts. The software keeps asking which profile to use and upload fails. No progress bar or percentage to help you know when to give up. The ride data and laps are all visible on the 705, but never make onto computer.

The square blocky fonts from the 70s are out of place, their legibility (of lack there of) is really evident if you set the device to display just a couple of data fields.

For the size and cost of this product the screen should be 20% larger.

Designed/programmed by people that have never ridden with a cycling computer. Unit fails to poll the speed sensor until after the satellite signal has been lost for many seconds. Consequently auto stop doesn't work. Every time the unit drops satellite reception the software assumes you've stopped, but you're actually going 30 mph on the drops of your bars with your head creating a reception shadow. Accurate determination of stopped/moving is a basic function of any cycling computer and this unit fails.

Lap history viewed on the unit fails to show ascent/descent totals. You must plug into computer to see those numbers.

The buttons are confusing and poorly labeled. The unit does not effectively display start/stop status and you'll lose miles of data because you pressed the stop button instead of the lap button. The button labels are too small and are all white.

The PC Training Center software is incapable of loading waypoints (favorites) to the unit. This and other basic GPS functions are inexplicably absent.

Giottos 5-section P-pod with Tilt Head and Quick Release PlateGiottos 5-section P-pod with Tilt Head and Quick Release Plate
Rated 2 Stars"Finger crusher" 2007-05-04
The good:
Built in quick release and tilting head.
The bad:
Heavy.
Tilting head doesn't provide sufficient friction to prevent heavy lens from flopping forward. Quick release thumb screw protrudes in line with tilt axis. When your heavy lens flops forward the thumb screw will crush your finger between the screw and the body of the monopod.
Remedies:
Keep thumb screw at back of monopod.
Drill and tap a new hole for thumb screw 90 degrees from original hole.

Sanyo VCP-AL49 49mm Lens Adapter for the Xacti HD1 & HD1A CamcorderSanyo VCP-AL49 49mm Lens Adapter for the Xacti HD1 & HD1A Camcorder
Rated 3 Stars"unfortunately required" 2007-04-17
Since the Sanyo Xacti cameras have no lens threads this is required addition for adding a protective or polarizing filter. It may make the front of camera too large for your belt loop case.

Works well with Hama 49mm Snap-on Rectangular Plastic Wide Angle Lens Hood with Cap, available from B&HPhoto.

This accessory isn't required for and can't be used with Sanyo wide or tele adapters.

I wasted a couple hours of life on this JUNK.

Decides for itself when you want to change inputs.

If you push the button, 50% of time it fails to correctly hold new signal after user button press, swapping you back to other machine. The other half of the time it never finds the new signal and swaps you back to the first machine.

Buy anything else!

Delta obviously doesn't test their tools. Mine broke after less than two hours of run time.

Top of motor pulley slips off bushing, resulting wobble breaks snap ring. You'll spend many hours cussing it.

Replacing the snap ring won't fix it. I ran a screw through pulley into bushing. This fix is chronicled with photos by another Amazon shopper. Will probably end up replacing #@!!% snap ring with cotter pin.

Just figuring out how to depress the spring to install a new snap ring took me a couple of hours. Finally assembled lever system using some bar clamps and carefully sized hole in wood.

GRIFFIN TECHNOLOGY RadioSHARK USB 2.0 Radio for MacGRIFFIN TECHNOLOGY RadioSHARK USB 2.0 Radio for Mac
Rated 1 Stars"Poor Reception" 2005-11-20
POOR RECEPTION

I've never owned a radio with reception this poor.

I'm using Radio Shark on Mac Mini with version 2 beta software. I live in a major market with dozens of radio stations. NONE come in clearly. ALL have static. I've tried plugging many cords into antenna jack. I've tried USB extension cables to change the location of shark. Only the 100,000 clear channel FM station can sometimes be received without static.

It does record on a schedule. ACC Recordings land in iTunes and transfer to iPod without human intervention. Unfortunately the software can't record MP3 format. There are several utilities available to transcode the recordings to MP3.

My next step is to crack the case and solder on a real antenna jack. Hopefully a real antenna in my attic will help.

Rated 4 Stars"Stout and Precise" 2004-12-06
Large and sturdy, but consequently heavy. May make your tripod too long for its case. Great for exact framing of stationary subjects. Is quickly adjustable once you learn which knob to turn. Use this and your long telephoto will never flop over and whack into a tripod leg again.

Rated 2 Stars"No good for video" 2004-12-06
Pros
Innovative leveling mechanism.
High build quality.

Cons
Legs torque and spring back, telephoto pans require constant hand pressure to maintain framing. Remove your hand at end of pan and camera will move back slightly. This is a design limitation. While this style of tripod is suitable for still photography it is bad for video.

Included 700RC2 head is flawed.
The head clamps onto a quick release plate mounted on the bottom of your camera. The plate is nice and makes a secure connection to the camera without tools/coins.
Unfortunately the head's clamping lever cannot fully rotate when your camera is on the head. Only very thin camcorders will work with this plate/head design. My Beachtech box impedes the lever.

Belkin F8E461 Media Reader for iPod with Dock ConnectorBelkin F8E461 Media Reader for iPod with Dock Connector
Rated 1 Stars"Too Slow" 2003-11-06
From the Belkin Web Site:
The Media Reader for iPod is optimized for the majority of digital camera users, shooting images of 1-3MB in size. The transfer speed of the Media Reader, with most media brands/types and using iPod software version 2.1, is 300-320KBps.  This results in a transfer time of between five and six minutes for a full 128MB card.

Funny that they used the word "Optimized". My USB 1.1 Zio reader and G4 Powerbook transfers twice as fast. My PC card adapter transfers five times faster.

Great camera with large LCD screen. Takes great pictures
in bright light. Not bad in low light with slow shutter.

Problems
No shutter speed control above 1/30.
No pass through of RCA/Svid to IEEE 1394 for capture use.
No line level audio input while taping.
Focus controls right next to microphone.
Zoom control fragile.
Camera forgets last mode when shut off.
No histogram of exposure.

Rated 4 Stars"Better choice than current Jaguar" 2003-01-06
If you want to get some work done erase the forty thousand plus OSX files off your hard drive and install OS 9.2.2. There simply is no reason to let the Unix-Aqua-Next hack job hurt your productivity any more. Sure you won't be able to run a few iSofts, but none of them are complete solutions and all are riddled with oversights and nasty user interfaces.

This software works on all Macs currently sold by Apple. Unfortunately Apple is threatening to release Macs that will not run anything below 10.3. That and the huge Apple price premium should be enough to discourage the few remaining Mac loyalists into jumping ship.

SonicBlue sells a lot of promises with their boxes. Few of the claimed features actually work well enough to use. Do yourself some Googling of usenet posts before wasting your cash. These boxes crash way too often to be considered a household entertainment appliance.

The show trading gimmick isn't a new Napster. Once you get a show from your friend, you can't send it on. This is a limit adopted by Replay for their Hollywood buddies.

The ICP web site says two free DVDs are available, designated by different stickers. I don't know which is being included here. My locally purchased CD came with the concert DVD. Footage suffers from being out of focus, poor lighting, camera shake, tripod shake, bad two track audio. Is obvious why they had to give it away. No features or menus usually available on DVDs. While the audio is poor it is sufficient to expose the very poor live musical quality of the concert.

If you own all other ICP discs, sure buy this one too. Otherwise this should be your last choice. Amazing Jeckle Brothers, Great Milenko, and Tunnel of Love are much better values than this CD. I like other ICP music, but this CD was a huge let down.

Logitech Driving Force Wheel for PS2 - 963257-040Logitech Driving Force Wheel for PS2 - 963257-040
Rated 1 Stars"Really bad and why" 2002-09-22
Tried this "steering" wheel with Grand Tursimo 3 A-Spec on a Sony Playstation2.

Bad:
I immediately disabled the Force Feedback feature. The feel is really, really bad, no where close to a real car with or without power steering.

Worse:
There is a significant lag in time before the game reacts to steering inputs from the wheel. The result is drunken weaving at low speed and alternate guard rail crashes at higher speeds. If my real RX-7 worked like this I would die before I got to the end of my street.

This steering wheel would be unacceptable at one tenth the price.

I own the 8x40 version of these fine binoculars. The image quality is better than many much more expensive units. If you don't want to spring for the extra cost of image stablization, the 8x40 Ultima binoculars are an excellent choice.

PRO
Decent low light capability.
Good compromise size if you can only own one pair.
Excellent optics - Fully Multicoated with BAK-4 Prisms.
Classic design for enhanced stereo effect.
Convienient center focus wheel.
Short close focus distance.
Easy to hand hold for extended periods of time.

CON
Poor strap on case.
Not waterproof, a limitation of the center focus design not a flaw with this model.

Apex AD-1500 DVD PlayerApex AD-1500 DVD Player
Rated 5 Stars"Easy to alter" 2002-07-28
Certain serial number ranges of this player can be modified with a CD image available on the net. Burn yourself a copy, stick in the player and bingo, the PROM of the machine is altered. The player will be Region Free and have no Macrovision copy protection.

So far mine has had no problems with VCD, SVCD, DVD, CD, or MP3. Variable Bit Rate MP3s play fine. Using ISO 9660 MP3 CDRs, the player shows the disk file structure and allows several modes of play. The menus aren't fancy in appearance, and unfortunately MP3 File tags are not used.

MP3 PLAY MODES
FOLDER : Plays all MP3s in one directory in alphabetical order then stops.
FOLDER : Plays all MP3s in one directory in alphabetical order over and over until user hits stop.
SINGLE : Plays one MP3 file and stops.
REP - ONE : Plays one MP3 over and over until user hits stop.
SHUFFLE : Plays each MP3 in one directory once in random order then stops.

If you group your files in directories by artist you'll be able to easily find what you're looking for. Files can only be played in alphabetical or random order. Numbering your tracks will alphabetize them into proper album order, but will waste two of the allowed eight ISO file name characters. Shuffle will randomly play files from one directory but not entire disk. There is no provision for shuffle repeat, after each tune plays once the player will stop. The inability to play all MP3s in shuffle mode regardless of directory is a serious flaw and will make you choose between burning disks good for navigation by artist, or best for playing random tunes.

The remote is hard to use and player build quality is [poor], but what did you expect for the price?

One surprising feature is the ability to compress the audio output into a dynamic range closer to that of a human. You'll be able watch a movie
without constantly riding the volume control.

Rated 5 Stars"Tivo will dramatically change how you use TV" 2002-07-16
Any Tivo is a huge improvement over regular television.

This unit can easily be upgraded for more capacity. I added an additional 80 gig drive without a hitch.

Pausing live television is great. I haven't used my VCR in over a year. Tapes are a joke in comparison.

Easy onscreen menus guide the set up of recording preferences.

The Season Pass feature will record every episode for you!

Tru-Grip CT36C 36Tru-Grip CT36C 36" Clamp-N-Tool Guide
Rated 4 Stars"Fast and Easy" 2002-02-18
Ingenious design makes temporary fencing fast and easy.

Drawbacks:
Guide can slip sideways while engaging lever.

Unclamping snap can hurt fingers.

Design and build tolerances don't not allow for ultimate accuracy. The fixed lever end does securely locate the guide, however, the sliding stop end will move 1-2mm. This play cannot be prevented by simply increasing the clamping force. It is caused by slop between the sliding plastic end stop and the aluminum bar.

Conclusion
Good enough for many carpentry jobs, but not acceptable for fine furniture construction.

Canon PowerShot S300 2MP Digital ELPH Camera Kit w/ 3x Optical ZoomCanon PowerShot S300 2MP Digital ELPH Camera Kit w/ 3x Optical Zoom
Rated 4 Stars"Small size, good pictures, software bugs." 2002-02-04
I bought this camera based on size and 3x zoom. The image quality was better than I expected.

You will need several accesories. I bought four extra batteries, two 128 & one 256Meg compact flash cards, a padded neck strap, and a little CaseLogic nylon case to hold everything.

Pros:
Small Size
Great Image quality
Camera software speed
USB cabled remote control
JPEG compression very clean, artifacts hard to find even at highest compression setting.

Cons / Missing Features:
Camera does not draw power from USB cable.
Battery life is short.
Autofocus delay makes candid shots impossible.
Small lens aperature makes action shots difficult in all but brightest of light
No IR remote
Movie length limited to internal memory not flash card size.
Camera does not hold "motor drive" setting through power cycling.
Creation dates of files all set to 1979.
Supplied Image Browser software sets file modification date to date file downloaded, not date picture taken. There is no provision to have camera name files with embedded date format like 2002_02_12_14_56 00002.
Many button pushes go unrecognized. You must watch screen carefully to make sure correct mode is selected. Simply counting button pushes may get you self timer instead of "motor drive".
Supplied 8meg card is useless because of small capacity.
The batteries are very expensive and the supplied charger only charges one at a time.
Automatic white balance setting does poor job, can't even recognize daylight. You must manually select correct setting, or risk nasty blue cast to outdoor photos.
Tripod socket not centered on lens opening.
No provision to turn off digital zoom.
No optical viewfinder indication of digital zoom range access.
Zoom non functional during movie capture.

Macintosh users shouldn't suffer with the included image browser software. Try Cameraid and GraphicConverter instead.
