Amazon Gold: A Ben Candidi Mystery by Dirk Wyle, ISBN 1568250959Amazon Gold: A Ben Candidi Mystery by Dirk Wyle, ISBN 1568250959
Rated 5 Stars"Fun and interesting" 2003-11-17
Interesting (and not too far fetched) plot, intriguing characters, good writing, realistic science, and an interesting tour of the Amazon area. My only nitpick is that because the novel is written entirely in the first person (from the point of view of the main character), the plot is a bit convoluted (the author can't just tell the readers about the controversy about the advantages and disadvantages of the modernization of the Yanomama people, but instead takes the main character to a conference about it).

Samsung ML 2151N Laser PrinterSamsung ML 2151N Laser Printer
Rated 4 Stars"Great printer. But zero instructions for network install." 2003-11-07
This is an amazing deal! Holds 500 sheets. Duplex (two sided) printing. Windows and Mac. Prints quickly. High quality. Can automatically print two pages on one. My only minor complaint is that it is a bit noisier than I expected when printing. But this is minor, because it is completely silent when at rest.

The only problem is getting it installed. I imagine that hooking up a parallel or USB cable will be easy. But if you wanted to do that, you'd buy the cheaper 2150 model. If you pay extra for the "N" model, you want to hook it up via an ethernet cable so any computer on your network can print to it. Good luck. I am reasonable facile (but hardly an expert) with network terminology and configuration (I know what TCPIP and DHCP and IP mean), and it took me several hours. I still am not sure why it started working, and really don't know enough to troubleshoot future problems. I suspect I'll be spending more time in the future repeating these steps.

Samsung provides zero help in installing on the network. The network manual has only two pages (in each language). And that tells you how to insert a CD and run the installation program. But then what? How to configure the network? TCPIP? They offer a printer driver, plus two network utilities, each with several options. What do they mean? Which should you use? Which gets installed first? Is it important to reboot? How to troubleshoot? You are on your own. Not a word about this in any of the manuals. Zero guidance on the web site. This is a very new printer, but Samsung's site also offers zero guidance for earlier N printer models.

Only buy this printer if you are very familiar with network configuration, or can get someone else to do it for you. Even then, expect to spend several frustrating hours fussing with settings.

Note the problem is not that the manual is badly translated. There simply is no explanation, zero, of how to configure the printer on the network. And the problem is not that my system is unusual. In fact, it is quite standard: computers running Windows XP home edition connected via Cat5 cables to a Linksys router.

Rated 5 Stars"Well written, exciting, and describes the high of climbing" 2003-05-12
This is a well-written page turner, and more. I always appreciate thrillers best when they let me learn about a different place or time. I've never been a climber, and don't want to be, but I enjoyed the way this book helped me understand the joy and rapture of a climbing life.

Rated 4 Stars"Plot makes no sense" 2003-03-28
It was a very enjoyable read, but looking back, the plot makes no sense at all.

--Spoiler alert. I give away some plot details below --
It turns out that the magician/criminal does most of his awful stuff as a way to distract the cops from the crime he really wants to commit. But if he just did that crime, the cops would never have been on his tail, so he would have had need to distract.

The Accidental Zillionaire : Demystifying Paul AllenThe Accidental Zillionaire : Demystifying Paul Allen
Rated 3 Stars"Who is Paul Allen?" 2003-03-04
Paul Allen is a fascinating guy, and this is his only biography. So it is worth reading. This is a well written, though a bit repetitive, short book that won't take long to read. The book retells what he has done, but without a lot of perspective.

Having finished the book, I have only partial answers to the two key questions:

1. What kind of guy is he? This is an unauthorized biography, so the author never got to know Paul Allen. The book gives plenty of anecdotes that hint at what he is like. But I still don't have a sense of who he is.

2. What has he accomplished? The book retells his life, but without perspective. It doesn't really attempt to answer the big question: If Paul Allen had simply kept his Microsoft shares, how would the technology revolution have been different? To what extent is he simply an observer, and to what extent is he a driving force?

How accurate is the book? I knew Paul back in high school (haven't seen him since) and the description of those years is fine. I can't judge the accuracy of the rest of the book, but it bothers me that the author says Paul lived off his Microsoft dividends, when in fact Microsoft has never (until very recently) issued dividends. I wonder how many other details are wrong.

The KingmakerThe Kingmaker
Rated 5 Stars"It's funny." 2003-02-26
In addition to being a great thriller, this book is quite humerous in places. And it is really well written, unlike so many thrillers. A great read. The entire book is written from the point of view of Drummond. I always find that first-person thrillers and mysteries are better than the others.

Liberty: A Jake Grafton NovelLiberty: A Jake Grafton Novel
Rated 1 Stars"Not believable. Not thrilling." 2003-02-22
I usually enjoy this kind of book (but have not read prior books by this author), but not this one. The plot is not believable. The characters are boring. The author appears to have made zero effort to research the background information (medical details, physics of nuclear bomb detection, computer security, etc.) so it all seems lame. It's not even well written. It is supposed to be a page-turner, but it seems like a chore to read. It is supposed to be a thriller, but after reading half, I really don't care what happens next. I won't bother to finish it.

Statistical Rules of Thumb (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics)Statistical Rules of Thumb (Wiley Series in Probability and Statistics)
Rated 5 Stars"Superb!" 2002-09-27
What a great idea. Rather than write a comprehensive text, Dr. VanBelle writes about a large number of statistical topics, focussing on areas that are confusing, or frequently misunderstood. Some of his "rules of thumbs" are approximate formulae for doing quick (but approximate) analyses. Most are more general advice, based on decades of consulting. Topics range from designing studies to making graphs, but most are about data analysis. Something for everyone in a well-written book.

Tumbling After : Pedaling Like Crazy After Life Goes DownhillTumbling After : Pedaling Like Crazy After Life Goes Downhill
Rated 5 Stars"Captivating." 2002-05-17
I was totally captivated by this book, which will stay with me. Susan's Parker life was turned upside down when her husband had a bad accident which paralyzed him from the shoulders down. This book is vignettes of her life since. Her writing reminds me of funny adventure travel writers like Tim Cahill, Pico Iyer, Bill Bryson and Doug Lansky. Her journey is not to a foreign land, but might as well be. Her description of how she built and found a new life is captivating, funny and moving.

Medical School Is Murder: A Ben Candidi MysteryMedical School Is Murder: A Ben Candidi Mystery
Rated 5 Stars"A well-written, funny, informative page-turner" 2002-04-25
I really enjoyed this mystery. It is well written (entirely in the first-person) and quite funny. I am a former university scientist and enjoyed his accurate (but exaggerated) depiction of university politics, as well as his clear and accurate explanations of biological principles. A reader without a scientific background will learn a bit of science, and about the way university science gets done. While this book has no pretense of being literature, it is a real novel with believable characters you care about.

In summary, this mystery is suspenseful and funny, while describing a world you may not know much about, through characters you care about. What more could you want? Highly recommended.

Pharmacology Is MurderPharmacology Is Murder
Rated 4 Stars"Enjoyable, plausible, interesting intro to academic life" 2001-04-10
When I read a mystery novel, I hope for: 1. Clever plot, good writing, and an enjoyable waste of time. 2. To learn about a place or time I don't know much about. 3. Interesting characters, a bit of real literature

I bought this book to read on an airplane, and it kept me enjoyed. I already know about life in a Pharmacology dept., so I didn't learn anything new. But I think someone who doesn't know much about academic life would enjoy learning about Pharmacology (and wouldn't be mislead). I didn't expect this book to be literature, but in fact the characters are well written and deep, way more than the average mystery novel.

I look forward to reading the sequel.

Primer of Applied Regression & Analysis of VariancePrimer of Applied Regression & Analysis of Variance
Rated 5 Stars"The best second book of statistics for biologists." 2000-11-13
Once you've learned the basic principles of statistics, how can a biologist learn more advanced techniques? Many books focus on math rather than on understanding concepts. Other books are too narrow -- discussing only a single method. And books that focus on multiple regression and ANOVA tend to have examples from psychology and social sciences. Glantz and Slinker do a great job of explaining the principles of multiple regression, analysis of variance, and analysis of covariance. The focus is not on mathematical proofs, but rather on making sense of the results in the context of biological and medical research.

This book also has excellent chapters on linear regression, nonlinear regression (curve fitting) and logistic and proportional hazards regression (regression when the outcome is an either-or binary variable).

New to the second edition are a chapter on analysis of covariance, more extensive discussions of multiple comparisons methods, and a discussion of Cox proportional hazards regression for analyses of survival data.

The title is a bit misleading. This is not a "primer" of statistics. But once you've learned the basic principles of statistics, this is THE book for biologists to learn about various kinds of ANOVAS and regressions.
