I found "She's Come Undone" after reading Lamb's other work I Know This Much Is True: A Novel (P.S.), which blew me away and left me wanting to read more from Lamb.

"She's Come Undone" is a great book, I personally didn't like it as much as "I Know This Much is True" but it was a fun, very interesting read. I think most people that have ever read a Wally Lamb novel know that his worst book is probably better then many others "best" book. If I had read this novel first, I think it would have impacted me alot more, simply because Lamb's writing really rings true and pulls you into the story.

Any men out there that think this is a book strictly written for women, your wrong. Dolores Price is the type of character that at first I hated, then I felt sorry for her, then I was disappointed with her and finally she ended up being someone who could easily be a friend.

Great writing, great story and unforgettable characters from Wally Lamb as usual! I'm looking forward to reading The Hour I First Believed very soon.

Highly recommended!

Enjoy~

Shutter Island: A NovelShutter Island: A Novel
Rated 5 Stars"What carnage we'll achieve...." 2009-11-04
Dennis Lehane is has written alot of great novels, unfortunately to this point I hadn't read any of them. I enjoyed both movies that were made so far based off his books Mystic River (Widescreen Edition) & Gone Baby Gone. For my 1st Lehane experience, I chose to read this stand alone thriller "Shutter Island"!

"Shutter Island" is a thriller in every sense, it has mystery, alot of suspense, action and is constantly making you think. Of the 450 some reviews here at Amazon, the book has a four star average, now thats quality.

The book won't scare you silly, but it will raise the hair on the back of your neck once or twice. Their is alot of dialogue throughout the book between the main character U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner Chuck Aule. Lehane threw in alot of humor throughout and it ends up being relaxing to read. The twist ending was great and alot of reviewers claim to have seen it coming, maybe they did, I didn't and either way its so far twisted no one could possibly know it exactly.

I devoured this book in a day or two and I'm definitely looking forward to the movie with Leo DiCaprio & Mark Ruffalo due out in early 2010. Dennis Lehane is a great author, if you haven't already done so, pick up one of his books soon.

Highly, highly recommended!

Enjoy~

Rated 5 Stars"Superb, masterful writing..." 2009-11-04
Christopher Coake's debut collection is nothing less than exceptional!

"We're in Trouble" is easily one of the top three best books of short stories I have ever read. The book has seven magnificent stories, all covering different subjects and each one leaves an impression.

This book will literally grab you from the start, with the first story "We're in Trouble - A Suite", which has three parts to it, with each story being different and not related to the others.

Part I - (Back Down to Earth) is a moving, heart breaking story about a boy and his dog

Part II - (All Babies Come from Heaven) will take your breath away, a couple that wants to have a child is torn by tragedy

Part III - (We've Come to This) is a the story about an old man who is terminally ill and is ready to say goodbye

The rest of the collection -

Cross Country - a superb tale about what a little boy thinks he saw and then the telling of what actually happened

Solos - the story of a daring solo mountain climber whose family is always in peril, waiting for the next bit of information on his success / failure / death

In the Event - a gripping story about a couple who aren't quite sure about their own relationship, their lives are changed forever when their best friends are killed and leave their son in their care

A Single Awe - a woman who once wasn't sure her college boyfriend was the right man, ends up marrying him after he becomes a hero and looks back at her choices

Abandon - two young lovers want to get away and retreat to a secluded cabin right before a brutal surprise snow storm blows in and leaves them trapped

All Through the House - a story about a sheriff who tells the story of his best friend who commits a horrific murder suicide on his family and how, why & what led up to that point

This collection doesn't have alot of reviews, but it does have a perfect 5 star average rating. Reading the other reviews myself, it's very easy to see that I'm not alone in stating that this book blew me away and stayed with me several days after I finished it.

Highly, highly recommended short stories! ** (other highly recommended short story collections are - Controlled Burn: Stories of Prison, Crime, and Men, Poachers: Stories and The Hotel Eden: Stories).

Enjoy~

Wow, I'm glad I finally discovered Wally Lamb!

"I Know This Much Is True" is a great book. At a mammoth 897 pages, reading the book itself is a journey, as is the story of twins, Dominick & Thomas Birdsey.

Very rewarding throughout, it puts you right there in the characters lives. Wally Lamb masterfully draws you in with each character and real life drama that is never sugar coated. Anyone can relate to someone in this book in your real life.

In my opinion, any book that can make you feel, really truly feel for the characters, is a masterpiece. Lamb's characters will have you on their side one minute and then you will be against them the next.

As another reviewer stated, this is one of those books that becomes part of your life for a while. For me that is absolutely true, I looked forwarding to reading it every night for the two weeks it took me to finish.

A very, very well crafted plot and alot of surprises and unexpected outcomes in the end. As your reading this book, you'll naturally make alot of assumptions and have your own idea of whats going to happen next or at the end and Wally Lamb will leave you dumbfounded every time.

A wonderful book, I know this much is true!

After finishing "I Know This Much Is True", I'm looking forward to reading Wally's other novels, "She's Come Undone" & "The Hour I First Believed

Read on the reviews anywhere for "Jesus' Son" - stories by Denis Johnson and you'll see the same things: amazing, life changing, a masterpiece. So I finally took the plunge!

"Jesus' Son" is eleven short tales about drug addicts, low lifes and other miscreants. I thought the stories were good, not great. The writing is unique and as one reviewer blurb on the book says, "its like reading ticker tape from the subconscious" and thats a dead on description.

Somewhere along the way, I read that Chuck Palahniuk said that "Jesus' Son" is one of his favorite books and that he often refers back to it when writing his own novels.

The stories I really enjoyed-

Car Crash While Hitchhiking
Out on Bail
Work
Emergency
Steady Hands at Seattle General
Beverly Home

Not your normal short stories by any means, but very good!

an almost perfect collection of short stories...

"The Hotel Eden" was my first reading by Ron Carlson and I found him only due strictly to the fact that I read a rave review for his new book, "The Signal" and wound up getting this one instead.

I love short stories and I have read several in the last few months, this book is right at the top as far as pure originality and stories that put you through the range of emotions. Ron Carlson could probably write about anything and make it so magical and interesting you couldn't put it down.

The book has twelve stories, all of which really, really impressed me. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of Mr. Carlson's short stories soon.

this outstanding collection includes:

Keith - a great story about unexpected, unusual friendship
(amazing story that has now been made into a movie)

The Prisoner of Bluestone - a man, a gas station and his ex wife (one of my favorites in the book, hard to describe without giving anything away)

Oxygen - a college student who takes a summer job as an oxygen delivery man, learns alot more about himself and the world

Dr. Slime - a man teamed up w/ his brothers actress girlfriend, are on a mission to find out where he's getting the money he's bringing home, why he's so bruised up and why their are so many pills over the house (one of those stories that doesn't quite make sense, then at a certain point, gives you that wonderful ah ha moment)

A Note On The Type - a criminal on the run, learns about respect in an unusual way

The Chromium Hook - a spooky, yet very well crafted tale told by several different characters

The House Goes Up - a woman has an all too flawless plan to make things go her way, everytime w/ men

What We Wanted To Do - they have a plan and its a good plan, but so far its just not working

The Hotel Eden - a young couple in London meet a new friend, who has all the wildest stories, all the right answers and knows all the right people/places, but who is he really

Zanduce At Second - a professional baseball player has killed eleven people now, by way of foul ball

Nightcap - a man has a fling, an unusual fling

Down The Green River - a man and an old friend and her son take a journey down the river in a raft, only to face a hole in the raft and nudists

I highly recommend this collection to anyone that likes short stories and great writing!

A great, great movie that I haven't thought about in ten years!

I own alot of DVDs and alot of old VHS tapes, I had "Out of Sight" buried at the bottom and decided to watch it for the second time ever (since I bought it (99').

George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Steve Zahn, Don Cheadle, Ving Rhames, Samuel L. Jackson, Luis Guzman (Waiting), Catherine Keener (40 Year Old Virgin), Michael Keaton, Dennis Farina, Isiah Washington and Albert Brooks all star in "Out of Sight"!

Great writing, great acting!

"Out of Sight" is based off the book written by Elmore Leonard, all the movies based off his books are good - "Killshot", "3:10 to Yuma", "Get Shorty" and "Be Cool"!

Enjoy this one, you won't be disappointed!

Rated 5 Stars"An Outstanding Collection......" 2009-04-18
Outstanding collection of short stories!

"Poachers" is the kind of short story collection that gets you hooked and sets a high standard for other books of short stories! I found this book by chance and I'm really glad I did!

The book has eleven stories in all, the last story being the title story "Poachers", which the author calls a novella.

The first story in the book "Intro. / Hunting Years" is actually a true story of the author's childhood hunting days in South Alabama. It's a great story and sets you up for the rest of the book.

My favorites=

Grit - a thriller, a showdown between the foreman & an employee who is also his bookie at a minerals plant

Triathlon - story of two friends, one who settled down and one who never will

The Ballad of Duane Juarez - if your going to use an alias, Duane Jaurez is as good as any, a brother is house sitting for a sibling and has no plans to let him down

Dinosaurs - a story of the love between a father and son

Instinct - a serial killers first time out

Alaska - two friends have big dreams and even bigger imaginations

Poachers - an excellent story about three brothers who poach the river for a living, no game warden can stop them, everyone in town is either afraid or feels sorry for them, time to call in the legend Frank David

(my descriptions by no means do the stories enough justice, I'm just trying to give you a taste without giving away anything revelant)

A great read with great writing, no story was too long or too short, a wonderful collection!

"Poachers" was Tom Franklins first book, he has two other novels, I plan to read his new book "Smonk: A Novel" soon....

First BloodFirst Blood
Rated 5 Stars"They drew first blood, not me...." 2009-04-12
"First Blood" is one of my favorite movies, has been since I was a kid! Sylvester Stallone played a great John Rambo and I don't think any actor could have done it better, but thats the movie version...

"First Blood" by David Morrell is a great book and after reading it for the first time, I can tell you the movie is very, very loosely based off the novel.

Morrell's main character (Rambo) and the movie Rambo are really nothing alike. In the book, he is referred to as Rambo or the kid, there is no mention ever of his first name being John. The book takes place in Kentucky, not the Pacific Northwest and in the book Rambo does'nt carry 14' survival knife. In the movie version Rambo only kills one person that you know for sure (accidentally, when he throws the rock at the helicopter and the deputy falls out), in the book, his death toll is in double digits by the end. Alot of the great, famous lines from the movie "they drew first blood, not me", are not in the book. Colonel Trautman nevers talks to Rambo once in the book, whereas in the movies they are friends.

The book really explains both characters points of view well, breaking down Sheriff Teasle and Rambo to the point where you really dont know who to root for towards the end of the book. Both men are war heros, both refuse to give up or back down.

A really good chase novel from start to finish, keeps you on the edge of your seat!

A must read for all "Rambo" fans and anyone who likes a great action novel, I really enjoyed this book~

** WARNING **
At the beginning of the paperback version of "First Blood", there is a section called (Rambo & Me) written by the author in 2000. The author explains how he came up with the idea for "First Blood" and talks about the book, compared to the movie. About three pages in, Morrell tells you the ENDING OF THE BOOK?????, the ending is different than the movie and should be a surprise. I read the (Rambo & Me) section and was completely disappointed to read the ending before I read the first page and I'm still baffled and why the author chose to do this. Beware!

FilthFilth
Rated 5 Stars"D.S. Bruce Robertson...." 2009-03-26
Wow, the book definitely lives up to it's title "Filth"!

Detective Sgt. Bruce Robertson is one despicable bastard!

He takes drugs, abuses his police power, is addicted to pornography, takes bribes, masterbates compulsively, is a sex fiend, has a nasty bit of eczema below the belt & has a tapeworm in his gut!

D.S. Robertson is a filthy human being, he back stabs his friends & co-workers, tells extremely harmful and deceitful lies to women to sleep with them and he stinks "literally"!

Once you get used to the Scottish slang used throughout this book, it really takes off. Bruce's misadventures are a laugh and his bad attitude is relentless.

The tapeworm in Bruce's gut talks occasionally throughout the book, it may sound odd, but it genius! The tapeworm tells the story of how Bruce grew to be the "Filth" that he is.

The book keeps a good pace throughout, but really delivers in the last 3/4 of the story.

The ending was perfect, easily one of the finest endings to any story I've read in awhile!

Everything's Eventual : 14 Dark TalesEverything's Eventual : 14 Dark Tales
Rated 5 Stars"Riding the Bullet..." 2009-03-14
A great collection of Stephen King's short stories!

Unlike alot of reviewers, I haven't read alot of Stephen King, I've never read one of his novels yet and other then a few of his short stories in magazines over the years, this was my 1st King book.

I'm a big fan of the movies, "Stand By Me", "The Shawshank Redemption", "Hearts in Atlantis" and "1408". I figured if King wrote all these great movies as (short stories) first, maybe I should be reading his other work.

"Everything's Eventual" has 14 (dark) tales as you can cleary see from the cover of the book. My favorites where:

The Man in the Black Suit - a little boy out fishing has a run in with the devil himself

In the Deathroom - an American in a foreign country is about to be tortured and killed

Everything's Eventual - Dinky Earnshaw has a special power, now he's using it for good, or not?

The Road Virus Heads North - a man buys a painting at a garage sale that seems to change everytime he looks at it

Riding the Bullet - everyone has to ride the bullet, but its a question of now or later

1408 - not one of my favorites in this book, just really basic when compared to the movie, probably much better if you haven't seen the movie already

Before every story in the book Stephen King talks about how he found / came up with the idea for the each one. It's simple, but I reallly enjoyed reading those.

Looking forward to reading more of King's short stories~

"The Illustrated Man" is one book that I have been wanting to read for quite awhile. If you've ever heard anyone talk about Ray Bradbury's books like their "amazing", don't judge it, until you have read his stuff. The guy IS "amazing"!

The fact that all these stories were written before 1952 is really "amazing"!

Ray Bradbury's obession with space, astronauts, Mars, peoples overall greed, laziness & reliance on computers/technology in the future were rampant throughout all the stories, but he makes it work well, as usual.

Personally I'm not a big fan of science fiction or space stories, but these stories draw in you easily.

The book has 18 individual stories, the prologue, the very last story in the book, which is titled "The Illustrated Man" and the epilogue are only three times the (illustrated man) is mentioned.

The stories are all individuals, they don't run together to make one final story or anything.

A few of the stories are so, so, but there were several that after reading them, I was left thinking, WOW!, they are:

Kaleidoscope
The Other Foot (5 star quality)
The Man (5 star quality)
The Long Rain
The Fox and the Forest
Marionettes, Inc.
The City (5 star quality)
Zero Hour

I really don't know how Ray Bradbury slept peacefully with all these stories and all the other stuff he wrote swirling around in his mind.

The only other Bradbury book I have read is "Fahrenheit 451", which was also really thought provoking and good.

Looking forward to reading more of Ray Bradbury's novels when I get the chance......

great book, great story

i've seen the movie way too many times to be surprised by anything in the book, but i've always wanted read it

to think the book is far fetched or impossible is stupidity, the book is right on the money, thats what makes it so scary, in todays world, a plane load of schoolboys stranded on a island would do much, much worse to each other for survival and control

The Master SniperThe Master Sniper
Rated 5 Stars"der Meisterschutze (The Master Sniper)........." 2008-12-15
A very good action book, especially if you like WWII stories & snipers!

The story starts a little slow, flipping back and worth between the German sniper Repp and the American officer Leets and his British counterpart Outhwaithe, but kicks into high gear and never lets up a few chapters in.

This novel was Stephen Hunter's 1st book, written in 1980. For a 1st novel, its excellent.

The story / plot of this book is amazing, once you find out what Repp's mission is, it will blow you away, this book should have been a movie long, long ago.

The Germans have a new weapon "Vampir (Vampire)", a highly sophisticated nightvision apparatus that attaches to a rifle, allowing the shooter to work at night and "Vampir" shoots a special 100 % lead round that makes very little sound when fired. Their is only one "Vampir" and the Germans have got their best man for the job, a German named Repp "der Meisterschutze (The Master Sniper)" as fellow Germans and the Jews know him. Germany is losing the war and its almost over, but Repp has one more mission to complete, a mission that could change the world.

An American officer named Leets has a hunch that something big is about to happen, he just doesnt know what or who it is, yet!

Good action, great characters and great storytelling from Stephen Hunter!

"Dirty White Boys" by Stephen Hunter was entertaining, I think "The Master Sniper" was a little better. Can't wait to read "Point of Impact" next!

Great book!

I've seen this movie several times over before I figured out that it was a book first. Finally I got around to reading it. Even though I read several other reviews saying how the book was just like the script of the movie. WRONG! The movie is excellent, but its still a movie. The book had so much more outstanding dialogue between the characters and lengthy but very good character descriptions.

Monty Brogan is an unforgettable character, his girlfriend Naturelle and ragged pit bull Doyle are also good.

Loved the New York City descriptions, although I have never been there, Benioff made it easy to picture it.

Benioff is my favorite author, his third book "City of Thieves" is one of my all time favorites. If you liked "The 25th Hour", do yourself a favor and check out "City of Thieves" & "When the Nines Roll Over" aslo by Benioff!

Outstanding book!

Power animals, split personality disorders, soap, fighting, mayhem, support groups, tainted food, castration, the book has a little bit of everything.........

I unfortunately saw the movie, at least 5 times before getting around to reading this book. If you haven't seen the movie yet, STOP, read the book first!

I've read two other books by Chuck Palahniuk, this one is the best so far!

"Fight Club" is excellent, the characters, the dialogue. It's all amazing!

There are so many good lines in this book, its hard to describe, but here are my favorites-

"If your a male, and you're Christian and living in America, your father is your model for God. And sometimes you find your father in your career."

"Tyler Durden the great, who was perfect for one moment, and who said that a moment is the most you could ever expect from perfection."

"How everything you ever love will reject you or die. Everything you ever create will be thrown away. Everything you're proud of will end up as trash. I am Ozymandias, king of kings."

There are 8 simple rules for "Fight Club"=

1.You don't talk about fight club.
2.You don't talk about fight club.
3.When someone says stop, or goes limp, even if he's just faking it, the fight is over.
4.Only two guys to a fight.
5.One fight at a time.
6.They fight without shirts or shoes.
7.The fights go on as long as they have to.
8.If this is your first night at fight club, you have to fight.

The movie adaption of this book, follows the novel pretty close! Ed Norton and Brad Pitt could'nt have done a better job!

Highly recommended to everyone and especially Palahniuk fans that may never have read (Chuck's 1st book)!

First of all, this is a very dark book, creepy and depressing throughout!

The book centers around a lonesome man by the name of Lester Ballard, he's a little bit (Hannibal Lecter) and a little bit (Ed Gein). Lester finds a dead girls body, instead of telling someone, he takes her home. After the first one, Lester can't stop!

The story in "Child of God" takes awhile to really get going, but the last half of the book is a page turner!

Highly recommended to all McCarthy fans!

Amazingly this McCarthy book was written in 1973! Wow!

Great short read that takes you to a dark, dark place!

Amazing book about the beginning of the war in Iraq.

The book follows the Marine Corps 1st Recon company as they blindly enter war in Iraq, literally not knowing exactly what their mission is or what to really expect.

I served in the Marine Corps with an infantry battalion, I got out right before the invasion of Iraq. The author Evan Wright, captures what it is to be a Marine and the camaraderie of the Corps perfectly. Wright's descriptions and Marine terms are right on, he did an amazing job with this book.

1st Recon did an outstanding job over there on the frontlines, considering the chaos among the battalion and some poor leadership they were faced with. They rose to every occasion, admitted their mistakes when they happened and seemed to learn from them.

The book portrays several officers as buffoons and I don't doubt that, but the book also commends other officers. Having served in the Marine Corps, I saw my share of officers that didnt have a clue and but I knew many, many more that were the epitome of what a good Marine is and were highly respected and looked up to by all.

Every Marine, every rank should read this book. Just to get a feel of the level of stress they went through, the tough decisions they made at all different levels of rank. There is no training in the world that could have prepared these Marines for what they went through and saw over there.

Great book, great reading!

Highly recommended!

"21" is a good movie!

Don't listen to the bad reviews here. Wow, so many of them. Apparently they are out to pick movies apart and point out all the minor flaws.

"21" is based off the book, "Bringing Down the House" by Ben Mezrich. Yes, it is a true story. No, the movie obviously doesnt follow the book exactly. They want to make money like everyone else. The movie is all "hollywood" with cons, set ups, snappy lines and hot chicks! Yes, alot of the movie is made up, who cares, its a movie and a good one.

I've read the first 100 pages of "Bringing Down the House", its similar to the movie, but not as much fun. In the book, the teacher and most if not all the students are Asian! The book couldnt keep my attention, but the movie is alot of fun.

Dont pass up "21" based on the bad reviews, Kevin Spacey is great, Laurence Fishburne is well Laurence Fishburne and Jim Sturgess is excellent!

I was eager to read "Blood Meridian", like most I heard it was a classic and profound read full of violence and gore. It was, but I found the reading in the 1st 100 pages tedious and slow going.

I really enjoyed the book as a whole, but found many of the descriptions long winded!

The violence and outright lunacy of the scalp hunters is what kept me reading. The main character is "The Kid", who for 14 years old is a tough one. Several other great characters in the book, "The Judge", wow, McCarthy could write a book just about him.

This was only my 2nd McCarthy book, the other being "The Road", which blew me away. If you like McCarthy, you'll probably enjoy "Blood Meridian", but the blood and violence level is very, very high if your not comfortable with it.

Personally I'm looking forward to reading "Outer Dark" next and then "Child of God", hoping to get back to the McCarthy I adored after reading "The Road"!

When you finish this book, if you feel like you have some unanswered questions, look up "Blood Meridian" on Wikipedia.com and you'll find a long analysis about the characters and the ending! I know I did.
