Rated 5 Stars"An excellent game" 2009-10-13
The banana seems sturdy enough, the tiles are a lovely quality, and the directions are super easy, but the fun is all in the game. My husband and I play Scrabble a lot, but it can take sooo long. This game is much faster, easier, and more fun because everyone plays at once rather than waiting - sometimes endlessly - for another player to make the "right" Scrabble move. Highly recommended.

I did order this game from Amazon, but it took more than six weeks to arrive.

Hunter Auberville 44-Inch Five-Light Dark Cherry/Medium Oak-Blades-Ceiling Fan, New Bronze #20413Hunter Auberville 44-Inch Five-Light Dark Cherry/Medium Oak-Blades-Ceiling Fan, New Bronze #20413
Rated 2 Stars"Disappointing" 2009-05-21
The fan itself looks just fine - exactly what you'd expect from a Hunter fan. The light cover is kinda ugly IMO. While the shape is nice, glass looks like it was spray painted to make it more opaque. Unattractive. My biggest objection, however, is the light output. This fixture only uses two candelabra bulbs, which come in 60 watts and less. In the evenings, I feel like I'm eating by candlelight, which is not the effect I desire. I'm disppointed. So much so that I am considering replacing this fan, which has only been installed for a couple of weeks.

I'll let you read other reviews to decide if you want to try the book. This review is specifically in reference to the audio book, which is read by actor Chad Lowe. My daughters and I listen to audio books daily, and we've listened to some truly gifted readers. The trouble with Hoot is that Chad Lowe reads with the skill that I expect from a non-professional. He brings absolutely nothing extra to the performance of the book. Very disappointing.

I'll let others review the story of Alexa and her friends (which I loved) and review only the audio component. The reading by Aasne Vigesaa was fantastic. I want her to read all my stories to me! Her voice is beautiful, well modulated, and she does a great job at creating just the right voice for the many characters. In addition, the CD was structured better than any I'd listen to. The audio was divided into section every 2 or 3 minutes, so if you had to take the CD out, the next time you played it, it was easy to go right to where you left off.

Perennial Gardening in TexasPerennial Gardening in Texas
Rated 5 Stars"an excellent addition to Texas gardening literature" 2006-08-26
The best new gardening book I've seen in a while. Instead of being a repeat of other high-quality Texas books (Native Texas Plants by Wasowski being the best IMO), a large part of the book is devoted to categorizing the plants by their forms (clumping, trailing, climbing, etc.), their prefered habitat (shade, boggy, etc.), by color, and by their ability to attract bees, birds, and other wildlife to your yard. I found these categorizations to be extremely useful. For further information about the plants, you can then look at the alphabetical listing of all the species mentioned in the book. The pictures in Wasowski's book are better, but the categorizations makes this book more useful for selecting plants for your particular landscape.

Rated 3 Stars"anightmare to assmeble" 2006-02-15
My daughter's enjoyment of the arm farm will surely be diminished by the memories of her mother's bad temper while assmebling it. I had a really hard time getting the center piece together; the water went straight through the farm, soaking my coffee table and pants (directions say that some leakage is possible); there wasn't enough "sand" to fill the container as the instructions directed. It probably took me 30 grouchy minutes to get the farm set up. Also, I knew this was a possibility, but ants did not arrive for 2 months.

Enoyable, but needlessly complicated with an excess of characters. As I was reading the final two chapters, my attention began to drift, simply because the plot was so convuluted that it defied my ability to keep up with the who's who list.

Rated 3 Stars"Butt Out" 2004-06-24
I don't expect MK & A videos to be deeply educational or fabulously PC, but I do expect them to be nice. The song BUTT OUT, sung to their younger sister, caused me to fast forward this video and then to tell my children we weren't going to watch it again. Other than that, it's the same as any of the other videos in terms of quality, storyline, etc.

Rated 1 Stars"A Dud!" 2003-12-02
As others have explained, a federal judge hiding out in the woods for some privacy finds a severly abused girl. For eight (count 'em, 8) days - until her mother comes blazing into the book - he nutures her and cares for her himself, without notifying the authorities, without taking her to the hospital, and apparently without any consideration of the fact that somewhere she has a family going crazy with worry. Of course, during this time, he tends her wounds, washing away any physical evidence that she would be carrying of her attacker. This guy is a judge??? Then, when her mother enters the picture, she *thanks* him for keeping her daugher with him. That's the worst kind of hideous fiction that I can imagine. I generally like Catherine Coulter, but I could not even go on with this book after the first 50 pages or so: The beginning bordered on "fantasy" not "fiction."

The 150 Best Slow Cooker RecipesThe 150 Best Slow Cooker Recipes
Rated 1 Stars"Leave it on the shelf!" 2003-04-04
"Send your crock pot on a world tour," one reviewer wrote. Well, if your crock pot can't behave any better than this, you ought to lock it in the cabinet and never let it out.

I borrowed this book from the library and purchased ingredients for 3 recipes. The Savory Cheddar Cheese Soup was a C-. If it hadn't been for all the salt and msg in the beef consomme, I'm not sure it would have had any flavor at all. Next, I tried Shepherd's Pie with Creamy Corn Filling. It was Ok, as in "strictly OK." It looked nothing like the lovely picture of a potato-topped casserole. Instead, it was a sloppy stew-like mixture. As for the third recipe. . . well, I'm not going to try it at all.

As others have noted, the majority of the preparation is outside of the crockpot. Basically, the crockpot is your cooking device - just like you might prepare everything on the stovetop and then put it in the oven. For example, for the Sheperd's Pie, I (1) browned the meat, (2) separately sauted the onions, garlic, and spices, (3) added beef broth and thicken it with flour, (4) made and seasoned mashed potatoes. Then, I layer it in the crockpot and cooked. Definintely not the "dump and go" system that many crockpot users desire.

I wish I could recommend a better crockpot cookbook. All I can recommend is "this ain't it, honey!"

All the Mamas: A True Love Story for Mothers and Daughters of All Ages by Carol Shough, ISBN 1887714294All the Mamas: A True Love Story for Mothers and Daughters of All Ages by Carol Shough, ISBN 1887714294
Rated 5 Stars"A beautiful book and a great gift" 2001-08-14
This beautiful book about love through the ages is reassuring and affirming. I bought it for my little girl, and I'm giving one to my best friend when her daughter is born next month.

I like this book quite a lot. Each letter has two pictures - one spelled in capitals and one spelled in small case. In fact, I would have given it 5 stars, except that the book uses Giant - too hard for a little one to grasp - and unicorn, which don't exist. Picky, picky I know. Let me assure it, it doesn't stop me (or my daughter) from pulling it off the shelf time and time again.

Rated 5 Stars"Read it again!" 2001-02-08
This is the first book that my 13 month old wants to look at over and over. It's fun because there are a lot of things to point out on every page - flowers, various bugs, acorns and seeds - which helps keep it interesting for the parent, too.

Rated 3 Stars"Sweet concept, so-so execution" 2001-01-24
I want to fully support anything that normalizes or promotes nursing, but I was disappointed in this book. I think the art is pretty awful. (Leopards, I'm sure, would be insulted by their poorly draw depiction.) Some of the text is interesting, such as a description of the baby elephant using it trunk to hug the mother while it nurses. However, other text is just a desription of the picture, such as "a baby lama nurses at sunset." I wish the book had been better done.

The Nursing Mother's Guide to WeaningThe Nursing Mother's Guide to Weaning
Rated 2 Stars"Pretty useless . . . ." 2000-12-08
I though that Kathleen Huggin's book on breastfeeding was terrific, but this one is a bomb. Although some readers will probably think that the first chapter on the cultural and histroical aspects of nursing is a yawner, it was actually my favorite part of the book. (It didn't help me with my weaning concern; I just thought it was interesting.) Like other reviewers, I perceived the book to be more a list of reasons that you might be considering weaning (and ideas to help you get around whatever your reason is) and less information on the actual process of weaning. Personally, I am a proponent of breastfeeding past one year, but I figure if you're reading a book on weaning, it should be about weaning.

Bear's DayBear's Day
Rated 4 Stars"Very sweet" 2000-07-10
This is a very sweet book, with simple illustrations and short, easy rhymes. (For example, "books to read""stringing beads.") It's a great book for the end of the day because it's got a nice, quiet feel to it. Although they're virtually identical, I prefer Cat's Play, perhaps because we own a cat and my baby is crazy for him.

Rated 1 Stars"a yawner (and I don't mean that positively)" 2000-07-10
I hate to be a grouch, but I don't understand what all the fuss is about. The storyline is OK, but the illustrations are COMPLETELY uninspired and uninspiring. We almost never pull this one off the shelf. For a wonderful night time read, I suggest "Time for Bed" by Mem Fox.
