| Obviously these headphones are not like the Bose ones, but they do a good job. They work in three ways: - They fit closely to the ears, cutting out high frequencies - They suppress mid-low frequencies actively - They raise the mid/low frequency spectrum of the music. Being aimed at "mechanical noise", they get rid of most of the server-fan noise in my office and reduce also a bit talking/typing (talking becomes inaudiable with medium-level music). The main con is that the increased mid/low frequencies can get annoying - so I simply adjust the equalizer of my mp3 player. The joint that make them foldable might get annoying, depending on how you wear them and on how mych cushioning is provided by your hair. Also for some people the leather cushioning might get a bit hot on the ears, but they only "fit on" and don't "hug" the ears. Overall the music quality is ok, and they're a good investment if you don't look for perfection or you don't want to spend >$100. | ||
| A First Course in String Theory | ||
![]() | "Only for curious undergraduates..." | 2005-11-03 |
| This book was the textbook for my "first year graduate" course. The purpose that it serves very well is outlining many major issues/concepts in String Theory to a reader who has no background in field theory, GR and related fields. It should be fairly easy to follow for an advanced undergraduate who is curious about this field and who is willing to plow through 500 pages for this. However, for someone who is building knowledge to do research in string theory or wants to "use" string theory for related fields, it is fairly useless, as it supplies neither deep understanding or the problems nor the sufficient "toolkit". Then, I'm afraid you can't take a shortcut. If you want to "use" string theory or do research on parts of it without the detailed understanding of the full theory then Becker, Becker, Schwarz might be the best source. If you seriously want to do research in string theory itself, then don't waste your time on Zwiebach, but sit down and study GR, advanced (conformal) field theory and group theory and work through Polchinski or GSW in detail. | ||
| Briel Lido Pump Espresso Machine - PARENT | ||
![]() | "Yes... I love my little power baby!" | 2005-08-24 |
| When you open the box you think "That's it?" because it is very small and has that late 80's design. But then, once you've set it up and got the coffee grinding right you realize what a perfect pressure/temperature setting that little machine has and how perfect the espresso is. A very delicious way of sustaining you coffee addiction and of embarassing yourself when you lick the ever-lasting crema out of the cup. After just a few cups you will get bored by the flat "dish water", in comparison, that the commercial-grade machines at work or at starbucks produce. And from the money that you save compared to the bigger fancy-looking ones you can buy a decent coffee grinder and explore some nice coffees, not only the standard italian roast. Just beware from where you buy, that you don't get a re-conditioned one or even a damaged return (had some bad experience). | ||
