 | Dark Continent : Europe's Twentieth Century |
 | "Just great history" | 2008-09-23 |
I think this is one of the must reads for anyone who wishes to be properly informed on 20th Century European political/intellectual history. It outlines that the 20th century was a battle between democracy, fascism, and communism, and democracy won. A bit reductionist but a well-written, enjoyable history that stays with you (I've read it twice now). .

 | "Good lord!" | 2008-05-14 |
I just got my 40D. I have an XT. I did a couple of comparison shots - good Lord, what a camera compared to the XT (and from what I have heard the XSi is not that great of a leap up but in megapixels, build quality even down some say). I knew it'd be good but my goodness, I haven't even played with some of the settings yet and out of the box - out of the box - I put it on Manual and played around. Contrasted shots with the XT. CONTRAST - no comparison at all. So this is how all those guys take such great pics, hum...? : )
Get it. You'll love it. You won;t be sorry.

 | Apple 8 GB iPod touch |
 | "It keeps getting better" | 2008-01-21 |
With the release of the new software at MWSF 08 Apple has made the iPod Touch *truly* an iPhone without the phone. I can now email, note, weather, stocks (AAPL, I used to work for Apple). No more Palms for me. If they keep releasing software updates and apps built into the system, then the heaven's are the only limit. I just love mine (if you can't tell!!) and keep it with me always. I wish it had Bluetooth and a memory card slot. Oh well.....

 | MONSTER CABLE HDMI400 Audio/Video Cable for HDTV |
 | "Don't waste money...." | 2008-01-21 |
.. on the Monster hype and high price quality. There are HDMI cables for $15 here at Amazon that do a great job. I have this cable and it's given me nothing but trouble (and the fact that HDMI + cable technology is not consumer ready though they shove it down our throats).

 | Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ,Eugene Drucker ,Lawrence Dutton ,David Finckel ,Philip Setzer - Mozart: String Quartets KV387 and KV421 |
 | "Forget the price..." | 2005-06-05 |
Nothing has topped the Quartet Italiano's full Mozart cycle; and a close listening to both those and this CD reveals where Emerson went wrong. A Mozart quartet is a very gentle, delicate being, and yet the Emersons attack it going not soft and gentle but from quiet to loud in an instant, as if that communicates emotion. You can tell each of them wants to have their part recorded equally as others rather than as a single entity. In a word, they do not treat Mozart with the care he requires. Mozart's anger or angst was sublimated into his music, and his life, and always with an ironic light element to it. Here the Emersons just attack and think loud is identical to passionate, emotional. It is not. Buy the whole set in the Complete Mozart Edition, which I keep going back to even with all the recordings of these quartets I have.
