| Madonna - Into the Groove [UK] | ||
![]() | "Classic Madonna Song" | 2002-12-05 |
| Simply one of the best songs from the decade we know as the 1980's, Madonna's "Into the Groove" first played on airwaves in the summer of 1985 when she made her big Hollywood screen debut in the cult classic "Desperately Seeking Susan." The song, which was played twice in the film (scene at club where Madonna meets Gary Glass and the end credits) became one of that decades best anthems. Now for the first time many Madonna fans in the USA can listen to the original version, which is not available on any of her albums ("You Can Dance" has a terrible remixed version and "The Immaculate Collection" has a short, radio edit version. This imported maxi-single also contains another of Madonna's earliest hits "Everybody" as well as "Shoo-Be-Do" which is a song found on her "Like a Virgin" album. My main reason in getting this single was for "Into the Groove," because it provides me great memories of it playing from my radio during the long hot summers in New York City. Nostalgic to an extent, "Into the Groove" still remains a classic Madonna song. | ||
| Magic 8 Ball: The Simpsons | ||
![]() | "New Version on Toy Classic" | 2002-12-05 |
| With a different look and sayings, the "Magic 8 Ball: The Simpsons" is a new twist on an old classic. Instead of being black and giving simple answers like "yes" and "possibly," this version captures many of the popular sayings said by the large cast of characters from the Simpsons. From Homer Simpson's "D'Oh!" to Ned Flanders' "Okeley Dokeley," this toy gives the user over twenty catch phrases from the popular series. Although it's a great toy and sturdily made, my only problem with the toy is that it takes a while for the saying to appear on the screen. I had to shake it several times before getting anything to appears on the ball's screen. Besides this downside, the "Magic 8 Ball: The Simpsons" is a great gift for any Simpsons' fan. | ||
| Britney Spears - I'm a Slave 4 U [Import CD] | ||
![]() | "A New Millennium, a New Britney" | 2002-11-30 |
| As the first single from her third solo album, "Britney," Britney Spears returned to the airwaves with this single that not only caters to the listening preferences of young teens, but also to an urban/dance crowd. Utilizing strong beats and having somewhat of an urban, yet rap-free feeling, "I'm A Slave 4 U" is one of Britney's best singles ever. Gone are the days of singing about adolescent love and other themes cornered by the numerous teen acts out there. This single introduces a new Britney, one in the same caliber as Cristina Aguilera, where she wished to express the she is no longer a little girl. The video for this song validates this, as we see Britney as a now sultry, determined woman willing to explore her carnal desires. This song also marks a first for Britney as it became one of her few songs to successfully cross over to urban audiences (who loathe boy bands and teenage vixens). After it was remixed by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, urban audiences accepted Britney as a member of the genre and their has been no regrets. "I'm A Slave 4 U" definitely marks a turning point in Britney's career. I only wish that top name remixers such as Thunderpuss, Hex Hector, and/or Johnny Vicious had done remixed versions of this great song. Regardlessly, it's a great song that breaks the music mold set already in place by numerous, and usually talentless teenage solo artists and boy bands. | ||
| Marc Anthony - The Concert from Madison Square Garden | ||
![]() | "The Latin Frank Sinatra!" | 2002-11-30 |
| Simply one of the most gifted singers of our modern era, Puerto Rican singer Marc Anthony has become the bonafide star he rightfully deserves to be. Every artist's dream is to play an arena as big and famous as New York City's Madison Square Garden, and just like a wish granted, this New York bred singer got his wish. The former RMM recording star (now signed with Sony Discos) is amazing as he captivates his audience in this special that was televised live on HBO in 2000. Singing some of his classics in Spanish and new hits in English, Marc truly is a glowing presence on stage as his fans, both male and female, are energized and moved by his gift of song. This DVD captures the intensity that Marc Anthony can only provide onstage. Whether you're a fan or an avid listener to salsa music and/or Spanish ballads, "Marc Anthony - The Concert from Madison Square Garden" is a must see. Gifted, blessed, and talented are the words I can use to describe this artist and this performance. | ||
| Nelly - Hot in Herre [Australian CD] | ||
![]() | "Nelly Returns to the Waves" | 2002-11-17 |
| St. Louis rapper Nelly hits the airwaves with the first single from his new album "Nellyville." The song is very catchy and was one of the summer of 2002's biggest hits. Not many rap artists can produce catchy songs due to the high level of un-originality that market has (e.g., sampling Broadway musicals, Duran Duran songs, etc..) but Nelly has proven that with this song that not only can he get his groove on, but that he can produce a single with high potential for market crossover success. Regardless of his feud with other old-school rap artists such as KRS-1, Nelly's appeal lies in his ability to adapt to the times, something that many rappers have not been able to do. Only a handful artists such as Busta Rhymes, Queen Latifah, and Ice Cube have mastered the art of keeping with rap's evolution, and so far Nelly has. Overall, "Hot in Here" is a great summer anthem sure to keep anyone moving. Regardless of the song's critics it remains one of 2002's best jams. | ||
| CB4 - The Movie | ||
![]() | "MC Gusto Rules!" | 2002-10-29 |
| While on a hiatus from his long stint on Saturday Night Live, comedian Chris Rock took time to write and star in this film spoofing the world of gangster rap and hip hop. Directed by Tamra Davis ("Billy Madison"; "Half Baked"), "CB4" stars Chris Rock as Albert Brown, a young African-American guy living in Locash, California who dreams of making it big as a major rap star. With his friends, Euripides (Allen Payne of "Jason's Lyric") and Stabmaster Arson (Deezer D), Albert sets his sights on landing a contract with mega produced Trustus Jones. However, trouble comes along when Gusto (played by Eddie Murphy's brother, Charlie Murphy), the owner of the most popular club is arrested in a drug transaction that Albert witnessed (Gusto believes he was an informer). With Gusto out for revenge on Albert, Albert decides to take advantage of Gusto's name and personality and create the biggest, baddest rap group of all time-- CB4 (short for Cell Block 4). Throughout the film, the band faces challenges to their freedom of speech, problems in their love lives, band disunity, and a reconnection with their African roots. With a variety of jokes primarily targeted for urban minorities, CB4 will have you rolling on the floor laughing. Also starring in the film is the late Phil Hartman who plays a California conservative politician bent on destroying CB4. Khandi Alexander (television's "Talk Radio," which also had Hartman as a cast member) is hysterical as the hip hop groupie Sissy who is a "businesswoman" due to her get rich scheme of capturing rap stars in embarrassing Polaroid shots and blackmailing them. Chris Rock has sure come a long way from his days on Saturday Night Live. "CB4" was his first starring role, and after watching this film you'll see why he is one of the funniest comics alive today. "CB4" is to rap music as "This is Spinal Tap" was to rock. It's funny to the last minute. | ||
| Kylie Minogue - Fever [Import Bonus VCD] | ||
![]() | "One Name Says it All....Kylie" | 2002-07-23 |
| Known as the "Wonder from Down Under," Kylie Minogue has always been one of modern music's greatest enigmas. The multitalented Australian singer/actress has achieved great success everywhere in the English-speaking world with the exception of Canada and the United States. In the latter, Minogue was only able to generate one top 40 hit when she recorded a cover of the popular 1960s song, "The Locomotion," back in the late 1980s, After that her entry into the American music scene fizzled as new waves of music started to take over the nation's airwaves. Regardless of her brief success in the United States, Kylie continued to make herself a name throughout the Commonwealth as she produced one hit album after another. Starring in such films as "Street Fighter" and "Biodome," Kylie continued to expand into other markets, somewhat like Jennifer Lopez has done in our present time. However, music has always been Kylie's first love and with the release of "Fever," Kylie has shown that she is the comeback kid of the new millennium. "Fever" comes at a time when the music industry has been sucked dry of all original talent. With an excess of unnecessary R&B groups and boy bands, with "Fever" Kylie has ventured back into a musical genre that has been making somewhat of a comeback lately....disco. Produced by former hitmaker Cathy Dennis, who scored several dance hits in the early 1990s such as "Come on and Get My Love" and "Just Another Dream," Kylie has shelved any beliefs that her music will only sell in Oceania and the United Kingdom. The first hit single from this album, "Can't Get You Out of My Head," was the number one song in over twenty countries when first released. With a catchy beat and creative use of electronica, this song brought Kylie the fame she rightfully deserves. Similar to the style that the Australian group, Madison Avenue, brought to dance music a few years ago, Kylie continues the trend of re-popularizing disco music in a time that listeners can use more dance and less rap. Songs like "More, More, More" and "In Your Eyes" transport the listener to a time when dance was king and rap was just talk on the streets. Similar to her previous album, "Light Years," Kylie has proven that she is a bonafide diva in her own right. With a variety of musical styles such as "In Your Eyes" (trancelike dance single) to "Dancefloor" (fun, early eighties feeling), "Fever" is definitely Kylie's best work to date. This Japanese release differs from most imported versions in that one will find additional tracks and some of Kylie's music videos on a companion disc not found on most foreign releases (althought the quality of the video portion is fair when played on a DVD player due to pixiliation). Regardlessly, "Fever" ranks as one of the best, most entertaining albums released in 2001. | ||
| Desire Unlimited: The Cinema of Pedro Almodovar | ||
![]() | "All About Almodovar" | 2002-06-06 |
| Simply the greatest Spanish film director since Luis Bunuel, Pedro Almodovar reigns as one of the best filmmakers in the world. Somewhat a cross between John Waters and Gus Van Sant, Pedro's films have won acclaim throughout the world, especially at major film festivals such as Cannes and Venice. "Desire Unlimited" by Paul Julian Smith covers all of Almodovar's films from his first major film "Pepi, Luci, Bom, y Otras Chicas del Monton" to his Academy-Award winning film, "Todo Sobre Mi Madre." Summarizing each film in its' own chapter, Smith gives the reader a summary of the plot and commentary on the film's characters, storyline, and locations to further educate readers more about Almodovar's methods. Smith does a great job in discussing each film, especially due to his citations of commentary and critiques from various periodicals throughout the world. Beautifully designed, this book is not only a treat to Almodovar fans worldwide, but also it is a must have for any serious film student/buff who wants to know the forces of creativity from a non-American director. While American directors are often subjected to edits and story rewrites due to big studio contracts and concerns, Almodovar and his film company, El Deseo, do not have to answer to anyone, giving him total control over his films. Truly a genius, Almodovar gets the respect he deserves in this book. I highly recommend this book to all who love Almodovar's unique, campy style. It makes great reading any day of the year. | ||

| Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up | ||
![]() | "Don't Believe the Hype" | 2002-04-21 |
| One of the best bands to be signed on Madonna's Maverick label, Prodigy produced a smash hit song and plenty of controversy when "Smack My Bitch Up" was released in the United States in 1997. The song which was used in a major scene in the film "Charlie's Angels" incorporates eletronica, rock, and Middle Eastern music in providing the listener with a throbbing, enjoyable tune. This maxi-single contains several versions of the song, however I am still a big fan of the original album version. The other remixes are okay. However, with the political correctiveness that runs the world today, many feminists and anti-domestic violence advocates caused a stir in the media saying that this song was sexist and degrading. With media news hounds interviewing such people and groups as Denise Brown (sister of murder victim Nicole Brown Simpson) and N.O.W., many rush to criticize Prodigy when in fact the title totally means something else in British slang (a similar case was when the film "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" was released in the USA; the term "shag" doesn't mean anything offensive in the USA, however the film was retitled for release in the United Kingdom, because the term "shag" is used as an expletive in that country's lingo). Overall, "Smack My Bitch Up" was one of 1997's best songs. Madonna is one smart business woman if she is able to sign this great band on her label before anyone else could. What a great band and song! | ||
| The Best of The Chris Rock Show - Volume 2 | ||
![]() | "Chris Rock Rocks!" | 2002-04-19 |
| Being one of the top standup comics in the world, Chris Rock has proven that he is not another Richard Pryor or Eddie Murphy when it comes to raunchy comedy. Unlike those latter comedians, Rock's appeal with urban and suburban America has made him a popular not only due to his previous work on Saturday Night Live, but due to his stint as host of his weekly cable television show, HBO's "The Chris Rock Show." "The Best of the Chris Rock Show, Volume 2" is another hysterical compilation of incredibly funny skits and jokes that Rock and other talented writers on his show have given television audiences in the past few years. Using fake recreations, commercial spoofs, and the talents of the ultra-funny Wanda Sykes, this collection will have you on the floor laughing. Some of the funniest skits on this DVD include "Selvina Delvina," featuring Wanda impersonating a possessive singer who only sings about her man and the "Make You Wait Hair Salon" where Wanda and Chris play the owners of a Harlem salon where waiting is a necessity and the service is slow. Another funny sketch is "Halle Berry 911" where Rock does a William Shatner-type role as host of a reality-based show (spoof of the show "Rescue 911"). The sketch which shows Berry as a menace to drivers was actually inspired by two automobile accidents she was involved in and ran away from the scene of the accident. I don't think the Oscar-winning actress will find this mockery of her driving skills amusing, but Rock sure does a hysterical job. The "Baby 1 Credit" and the comical driving safety sketch are also added bonuses on this DVD. This DVD, which comes with bonus material of Rock's version of HBO's "Taxicab Confessions" is also great, although most of the material on this disc is the same as Volume 1. Overall, this DVD is one of the best comedy DVDs to come out in a long time. It's much more funnier than his "Pootie Tang" movie and worth every cent. Born with a gift for comedy, Rock is definitely one Saturday Night Live Alum who hasn't lost his touch. This DVD is a must have for anyone into outrageous, mouth dropping comedy sketches. Highly Recommended! | ||

![]() | "Beautiful Portrait of the Great Isle" | 2002-04-05 |
| Although off limits to American tourist for over four decades already, Cuba has always fascinated American travelers since the early 1900s. The island, which has some the Caribbean's most beautiful beaches and friendliest people has seen tough economic times due to the unjust economic embargo placed by the United States after the Cuban Revolution of 1959. The "Insight Guide to Cuba" is a beautiful, informative guide to this island nation. As an American planning on visiting the island in the future (it is not illegal to visit Cuba for Americans; U.S. law prohibits Americans from spending money there) I wanted to have an idea on how the island appeared like in photographs, and read more about the history of its' people, cities, towns, and sites. This book perfectly captures the island's spirit in beautiful color photographs and well-researched articles that cover everything about the island. Although it is not resourceful when it comes to resourceful information such as emergency numbers, addresses, etc., ... like a Lonely Planet guide, this guide is a must have for anyone who appreciates the island's beauty in photographs. Handy, well researched and compiled, the "Insight Guide to Cuba" rates a ten in my travel book collection. I stare at the book's photographs and almost feel that I am on the island. Until I get there, this book will do. | ||
| The Declaration of Independence (Bantam Classic) | ||
![]() | "The Foundations of America in One Book" | 2002-02-11 |
| Compact, thorough, and informative, the Bantam Classics edition of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States is a great book to have around. For students or anyone wanting to understand the factors that led to the writing of both of these important documents, this edition discusses the reasons that led Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and other important politicians in the newly created United States to draw up such charters. Editor Pauline Maier does a good job of covering the background of events that led to the Declaration and Constitution. Being compact in size, I see this book as being helpful for most high school students or prospective candidates for American citizenship because it can be carried in a pocket, purse, or coat pocket, and can be pulled out whenever necessary. The book's price is also a great incentive to buy a copy, because it won't blow a hole in your budget. Overall, a great book at a great price! | ||
| Muscle Mechanics | ||
![]() | "All the Right Moves" | 2002-01-26 |
| If you feel totally clueless whenever you step into the strength-training section of a gym, then "Muscle Mechanics" is the book for you. For many bodybuilding and fitness novices, learning the proper form or way to lift, pull, or push bars, pulleys, or other gadgets that are commonly found on a gym floor can be a task itself. Without the assistance of a personal trainer, which can be an expensive investment, weight training can be very difficult, if not hard for most. Unlike many other books on the market, "Muscle Mechanics" is a perfect companion to those who want to really get into the move of things. Using photographs, and easy-to-read type, the book surpasses many professionally written books by top name fitness gurus because. In plain English, this book is similar to a "Dummies" or "Complete Idiot's" guide to weight-resistance exercises. Although I am much more of a pro when it comes to training, this book was helpful in helping me learn several exercises that I was not performing correctly. Overall, the book's design, setup, and price are all added pluses when it came to me in purchasing it. So, if you're looking for a simple, yet thorough book on weight training, this book is the right choice. | ||
| Naming New York: Manhattan Places and How They Got Their Names | ||
![]() | "Cool Book for New York-Philes" | 2002-01-24 |
| Ever wondered how Hell's Kitchen got it's name or why Bowling Green is called that? Well, finally there is a book that can answer these and many other place name questions. "Naming New York: Manhattan Places and How They Got Their Names" by Sanna Feirstein, and published by the respectable folks at New York University Press is a great, well organized book that discusses how most places in the borough of Manhattan got their names. Chapters, which are divided by areas on the island such as Upper East Side, Inwood, and Harlem, discusses the origin of many street, park, and neighborhood names. The author, who briefly gives the origin of the place name in a simple sentence or two, apparently has done some deep research at a local library or archive in order to amass such an extensive list of information. With a great cover design and feel, the book captured my attention at a local bookstore. Overall, the book is a must for anyone who loves the City that Never Sleeps. It's a great book for a great price, which today can be a rarity. | ||

![]() | "Handy, Durable Map for your Visit to Puerto Rico" | 2002-01-18 |
| Compact, durable, and handy are the three words that come to mind when I purchased this map for my trip to Puerto Rico. Produced by the staff of Insight Guides, this laminated map comes in a handy, foldable format, that allows the user to carry around in such places as a purse and pocket. Besides covering the island, there is a small inset map of the capital city of San Juan, and relevant information on things visitors should know when on the island (e.g., currency used, language, voltage standards, etc.). Just like the popular Insight Guides travel guide series, the "Insight Map Puerto Rico: Fleximap Plus Travel Information" is a great resource to have when visiting this beautiful island. I highly recommend! | ||
| Latin Boys Go To Hell | ||
![]() | "Cute Latin Boys, Not Enough Substance" | 2001-04-27 |
| Filmed on a shoestring budget throughout New York City, "Latin Boys Go To Hell" is the story of Justin, a young gay Mexican photo assistant (Irwin Ossa) residing in Brooklyn. Justin, who dreams of finding the perfect man hasn't had much looking for the right man at clubs. While there is a hot Latin model (played by the hot Mike Ruiz who appears on the cover) who is trying to get have a quick fling with him, Justin still doesn't know what he is looking for until he discovers the his cousin from Chicago (John Bryant Davila) is moving in for a while. During his stay, Justin begins to develop feelings for his cousin, however his cousin has his eyes set on Andrea (Jenifer Lee Simard). The film, which is a good short film, really doesn't capture the essence that makes many independent films successes at festivals such as Sundance. The quality of the film is really dark, sometimes grainy, and the acting is average. While the cast is pretty good, the standout performance in this film was by Alexis Artiles, who plays the jealous, possessive, crazy boyfriend of Carlos, the hot Latin model who is after Justin. His performance as a "telenovela" (Spanish-language soap operas) addicted boyfriend who revolves his life around the events that occur on "Dos Vidas," a telenovela that he is hooked on. The film, which is unrated, has some pretty strong imagery and scenes that should not be viewed by minors and/or people uncomfortable with gay sexuality, male nudity, and gore. Director Troyano does an okay job of telling this tale of gay Latin males living in the Big Apple, however I don't know why she decided to have this story revolve around a Mexican character living in New York, when in reality the Mexican community in New York is very small when compared to the city's Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Colombian communities. The club scenes don't appear that authentic, and it looks like most of the scenes where filmed at such night clubs as Krash and La Nueva Escuelita during the day. The film has elements of Pedro Almodovar's style, however due to its limited budget, the film's quality loses the elements that made Almodovar's films unique (e.g., color, sound, music, designs, etc..). Overall, I give this film three stars due to my respect for independent filmmakers and especially for the burgeoning Latin boom in recent films. | ||

![]() | "EBTG Returns with this "Missing" Follow-up" | 2001-02-19 |
| After the worldwide success of their hit single "Missing", Everything but the Girl returned back to the world of dance music in 1997 with this single. Using the highly-talented skills of Todd Terry, who made an acoustic song into on eof the 1990's most memorable club tracks, "Wrong" captures some of the impact "Missing" had to a certain extent. This CD single contains the following versions: (1) EBTG Original Mix - 4:36 (2) Todd Terry Remix Edit - 3:55 (3) Deep Dish Remix Edit - 4:20 (4) Todd Terry Remix - 6:48 (5) Everything but the Drums - 4:25 (6) Tee's Beats - 2:25 (7) Deep Dish Remix - 11:30 (8) Deep Dish Dub - 11:43 While all the versions are great the two that stand out from the crowd are the "Todd Terry Remix" and the "Deep Dish Remix." This track, which appears on their "Walking Wounded" LP had a great video and a great video as well, and although it wasn't big as "Missing" it showed that EBTG were taking full advantage of Todd's skills when working on future products, allowing them to enter a new thriving market of dance artists. | ||
| El secreto de Selena: la reveladora historia detrás de su trágica muerte | ||
![]() | "Excellent Expose on the Slain Tejano Superstar" | 2000-12-08 |
| Well-researched, yet a bit long at times, "El Secreto de Selena" ("Selena's Secret"), is an interesting thought-provoking expose on the reasons that led to the singer's death by her fan club manager. Puerto Rican news anchor, Maria Celeste Arraras, who is one of the most respected women in her field, decided to write this book based on interviews with several people, most importantly Yolanda Saldivar, Selena's murderer. First of all, let's clear things. Selena wasn't a saint, nor am I. To reach sainthood you have to have perform miracles and go through a process. With the media's power influence, Selena's "canonization" was unnecessary in many ways. Arraras' book, which begins with her discovering about Selena's death at the studios where she films her television show, "Primer Impacto" and moves on to her heading to Corpus Christi, Texas to cover her funeral and the media frenzy that followed is well-written in every sense of the word. Arraras continues with her campaign to punish shock jock Howard Stern for his spoof of Selena's final moments (a chapter that I found unnecessary) and her later investigation of Selena's final days. There are many questions that are answered in this book: Why was Selena spending so much time with her plastic surgeon in Mexico? Why did the Quintanilla family did not disclose the Selena had been to a clothing factory with her "male friend" so many times within a few months (a fact proven by official Mexican documents)? Where was Selena's husband and what was the status of their marriage? Why did Selena choose Mexico to be the production country where her clothing line would be produced? Arraras' book answers all these questions and more. The book makes you ponder about many things, especially the belief that Saldivar was an "obsessed lesbian" in love with Selena? After reading this book I came to think that being the only book on the market about the hidden truths that led to Selena's death, why didn't the Quintanilla family sue Arraras for slander? Why to this date they haven't sue Arraras only tells that the author did her homework in an un-biased manner, and she didn't succumb to the mob mentality that ruled Corpus Christi during Saldivar's trial. While I feel that Saldivar is guilty as sin, the other players in this book have remained out of the public spotlight ever since its' publication. Why? Read this book, analyze the facts and separate them from the fiction, and then you'll discover "Selena's Secret." One of the best expose books I have read in years. Highly recommended! | ||
| David Newman - Heathers: Original Soundtrack | ||
![]() | "Great Film Score for a Cult Classic" | 2000-12-06 |
| Composed by David Newman, the original motion picture soundtrack to "Heathers" is probably one of his best ever. Newman, who comes from the same talented family that gave us Randy Newman (his brother), composed the score to Heathers, probably not knowing how memorable that film would become with teen audiences. His score which includes elements that are suspenseful ("Forest Chase"), mischief ("Into The Cafeteria"), and eeriness ("J. D.'s Bomb") is a film score classic. His decision to use a harmonica in certain scenes gives the film both a feeling of darkness and the unknown as the main characters begin to eliminate the school's most popular (yet hated) students. If you were a fan of the film, then the soundtrack is a must have. My only disappointment was that the album's producers decided not to include the tracks by Doris Day (the opening song "Que Sera Sera"), the closing song (Sly & the Family Stone's version of "Que Sera Sera") and the most popular song in the film, "Teenage Suicide: Don't Do It!". Regardlessly, this is one of the best film scores released in the last decade. | ||

Rich in color, the ink cartridge gives you a good buy for your money. If you a person who doesn't use your MFC on a daily basis, then the cartridge will last you for a long time. However, if you're a person who constantly uses, then the cartridge;s supply won't last too long. That is the only negative thing about this product. Besides one minor fault, Brother's MFC/Fax accessories are one of the market's best buys in quality and performance. I recommend purchasing a few of these cartridges whenever your purchase them online so that you can have some on reserve just in case your cartridge runs out of ink. | ||

| CB4 - The Movie | ||
![]() | "M.C. Gusto Rules!" | 2000-10-27 |
| Shut Up & Dance!: The Best Of Freestyle, Volume 2 | ||
![]() | "The Best of Freestyle!" | 2000-10-24 |
| Freestyle was one of the 1980's greatest musical styles, and while many who lived in an area covered with nightclubs became familiar with the many artists that came out of the boom it saw during that decade, others were totally clueless about an up and coming musical force. Originating in the Bronx, freestyle was a blend of dance and Latin rhythm that shook New York's club world from head to toe. Thanks to this musical style, many artists such as George Lamond, TKA, Expose, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Noel, Sweet Sensation, Brenda K. Starr, and Safire were introduced to the world of music. While many scored number one hits, others faded into the darkness, only to see their careers revived as salsa singers during the Latin boom of 1999. "Shut Up and Dance: The Best of Freestyle II" is a collection of some of the best artists on one disc. The compilation starts off with the Miami chart-topping trio of Expose and their hit "Exposed to Love." Expose's success was sealed with their platinum selling dance album, "Exposure" that sealed them as the biggest selling female trio of the 1990's. Other great artists such as George Lamond and his hit "Bad Of The Heart," "Dreamboy / Dreamgirl" by Cynthia And Johnny O, and TKA's "Give Your Love To Me" all showcase the immense talent many of these Puerto Rican artists had in reinventing the club-dance genre in the United States. While Disco ruled the 1970's, and New Wave ruled the 1980's, the late 1980's and early 1990's was definitely freestyle's golden age. Try this album for a great and enjoyable musical experience. Also try Volume I of the series to discover many other artists mentioned above. | ||
| Tales From The Crypt Presents - Demon Knight | ||
![]() | "Billy Zane Rocks!" | 2000-10-20 |
| Funny, scary, and entertaining, "Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight" is the first of a series of films that are derived from the popular HBO series. Unlike the "Creep show" and "Tales From the Darkside" films of the past, "Tales From the Crypt" focuses on one tale of horror and suspense each time, allowing the story to develop into a more entertaining experience. Directed by Ernest Dickerson ("Juice") "Demon Knight" features the immense talents of William Sadler, Jada Pinkett Smith, and the ever versatile, amazing Billy Zane in a horror movie laced with plenty of comedic moments. The story revolves around a key that Sadler is carrying in order to pass on to the next guardian. There are a total of 7 keys, representing a galaxy each. According to Sadler's story, the key contains the blood of Jesus Christ. While dying on the cross at Golgotha, a follower of Christ pour his blood into the key to prevent the conquest of earth and the rest of the universe by Satan and his legion of demons. Until all keys are together can this happen, and with 6 of the keys in the hand of demons, the fate of the universe lies on Pinkett Smith's character, who is the chosen one to carry the key after Sadler. I must praise Billy Zane. He is amazing. He plays the perfect villain, and in this role he is dynamite. His performance is more comedic, and he would make similar villains of the past such as Freddy Krueger very proud. I can understand why Hollywood has typecasted him as a villain in almost all of his films after seeing this film. Zane's intense sex appeal will captivate many viewers, and his range of emotions is incredible. Pinkett Smith who was coming into films fresh from the cancellation of the long-running NBC series "A Different World," is great. As the heroine of the movie she really can kick butt, and her on-screen chemistry with Zane is perfect. In conclusion, this a great film to view if you are in the mood for horror mixed in with a bit of dark humor. The film can be strong at times with the sight of gore and violence, but if it weren't for Billy Zane's performance, I wouldn't have cared to watch this film at all. He is one of the film world's most gifted actors and this film was a showcase of his talent before he became a bigger name when he starred in "James Cameron's Titanic.""Demon Knight" is an excellent example of how to create an entertaining horror film. Skip "Blair Witch" and try this film instead. | ||

![]() | "Latin Rhytnm and Flavor...French Style" | 2000-10-18 |
| Within the past few years, the boom in Latin culture has grown at a tremendous rate that has astonished many throughout the world. What is it of Latin music that stirs passion and rhythm whenever one listens to its' sounds. Well, in France, Latin music has been popular for many, many years. Unlike audiences in the English-speaking world, the French have admired Latin music for many reasons. Linguistic similarities, exoticism, and most importantly rhythm gave Latino artists a major audience that could enjoy their sounds. Compiled by Paris' "Latina Cafe" (which is on the Champs-Elysees), Wagram Records, and Radio Latina 99FM, "Latina Cafe" is an excellent exploration of Latin music on two compact discs. The first disc, which explores the classics of Latin music features such stars as Hector LaVoe, Gilberto Gil, Fulanito, Oscar D'Leon and many more others who lend their talents on this compilation. In my opinion, the highlights of this disc have to be La Lupe's version of the Peggy Lee classic "Fever," which she sings in a heavy Spanish accent. Singing in both English and Spanish, La Lupe was one of Latin music's greatest divas, and her devout gay following have made her an icon due to her ability to use flamboyance and sing with earthly passion and soul. Celia Cruz's "La Vida es Un Carnaval" is the ultimate song that showcases Celia's amazing vocals and passion whenever she sings. If this song that doesn't get you up and moving, then there is something terribly wrong with you. Disc Two explores Spanish & Portuguese music heavily influenced by new age electronica. Unlike today's electronica, the music on this disc is done so to capture the rhythm of the song and not to send you on a trance. Songs like "Maracatu Atomico" by Zuco 103 and "Samba" by Faze Action will send you into a dreamworld where everything Brazilian surrounds your soul. On the Spanish-language side, "Cada Vez" by Negrocan and "Pienso en Ti" will do the same, only with a much more tropical feeling. Disc one has over 68 minutes of music, while disc two has 78 minutes. Since it is imported from France, the packaging along with booklet is written in French. However, this shouldn't rule your purchase of this great compilation out. Try "Latina Cafe" for an excellent and sensational listening experience. When I first heard it playing at a store in Manhattan, it captured me entirely. Listen to it, and it will do the same to you as well. | ||

![]() | "Scenes from the Class Struggle in Polynesia" | 2000-10-02 |
| While it lacks some important facts that were the primary reasons for the destruction of Easter Island's decline, the film "Rapa Nui" makes a modest attempt to try to recreate life on the most isolated piece of land on earth. Called "Rapa Nui" by its' Polynesian inhabitants, the island was named "Easter Island" after being discovered by a Dutch schooner on an Easter Sunday in the 18th century. Produced by Kevin Costner ("Dances With Wolves"), and directed by director Kevin Reynolds ("Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves") "Rapa Nui" stars a young cast and features breathtaking scenery. Jason Scott Lee ("Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story") and Esai Morales ("La Bamba"; "My Family") star as members of rival tribes. When Jason's character falls in love with a woman (Sandrine Holt) from the opposite tribe, troubles, rivalries, and tensions arise as both men attempt to win her love. Filmed entirely on location on Easter Island, the film has a feeling of authencity as we can see the island's famous "moai" statues everywhere. While the birdman race, and the roles several minor characters play in the film can detract from the main story, the film makes an nice attempt to recreate the greatest civilization to arise from Oceania. The island (annexed by Chile during the 19th century) has a blend of Latino/Polynesian cultures where Spanish and Rapa Nuian are spoken, the filmmakers really didn't cover the island's deforestation, which is believed to be the main culprit for the island's collapse. Regardless, the film allowed an anthropology student as myself to get a view and feel of Rapa Nuian culture as it could have been. Seeing it on film is much more better than seeing it in a textbook. Fans of Thor Heyedahl's book "Kon Tiki" will probably like the film, because it explores the theory that Easter Islander's original inhabitants could have come from the South American mainland or from another Polynesian island chain. While there is substantial fact that Easter islander's made contact with their closest island neighbor, Pitcairn Island (famous from the "Bounty" mutiny) which is over 2,000 miles away, I only wish the film could have ended with a conclusion the Lee's and Holt's characters safely made it to terra firma when they set sail from Rapa Nui. Overall, Rapa Nui will appeal to anthropology and history buffs everywhere. Pick up and check out this film instead of watching reruns of "Gilligan's Island" on syndication. | ||
