| Photosecrets San Francisco and Northern California: The Best Sights and How to Photograph Them (Photosecrets (Series).) | ||
![]() | "A tour guide is all this is..." | 2009-08-06 |
| Having ordered this based on the rave reviews, I have to agree with the one star reviewer. This is more of a general "tour guide" book with bits of history and information, than a photo tip one. One has to comb through it to find the photo secrets. I can only suggest noting the specific places you want to see and writing them down before heading out as it is a rather heavy and difficult to read book due to its page design. Sadly disappointed and will be returning it. | ||
| Lodge Logic 13-1/4-Inch Pre-Seasoned Skillet | ||
![]() | "Back to Basics" | 2009-07-17 |
| I have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars for pots and pans over the years. Several years ago, I returned to this old basic and use it more than any other skillet I own. I've gotten both the plain regular unseasoned and the pre-seasoned Logic pans and dutch oven. After several uses of the Logic pans, the pre-seasoned finish comes off anyway after a few uses, so the key is to season these iron pans yourself. It's not difficult at all. Cover inside and exterior with a very thin coat of oil and "bake" in the oven. The only care thereafter requires only hot water, a scrubbing brush to remove cooked-on bits, and drying over heat on the stovetop. Now and then I'll re-season the interior with a thin coating of oil. It is perfect now as is and will serve me many years to come. | ||

| Moka Express - 3-Cup | ||
![]() | "A few tips from my experience" | 2009-05-16 |
| Am very happy with my 6-cup stove top moka espresso maker. Included instructions are a little hard to understand. It states not to tamp the grounds down. True, the ground coffee swell to fill the filter/funnel/grounds container so you don't need to fill it to the top. You'd only waste coffee and get a cup of mud. Fill the bottom "tank" with water to the ridge line below the valve. Keep the flame just to the bottom diameter of the water receptacle or you risk burning the handle off. 6-cup maker takes a little more than 5 minutes for the espresso to fill the pot. It's done when the percolating stops. Hold the top down as its light weight lid swings open and you get hit with a blast of hot steam. I get a good strong cup with a bit more than half filled coffee. Then I top it off with a few ounces of hot hot water Americano style. | ||

| Fast, quiet and works as advertised. The only thing that bugs me royally is its bright always-on orange light. For this, minus one star. Especially distracting in a darkened room to watch video. Otherwise, overall am pleased with its operation which I'm using for Mac OSX Time Machine. | ||

| Can't ask for an easier to use menu interface. Great pictures. Umpteen picture taking modes. Everything is automatic, meaning there is no manual aperture or exposure settings. Having just gotten this recently, I was surprised the easy the shooting mode dial turns... maybe too easy. in fact, I wonder if it's loose... anybody owning same, please comment. | ||

| Aperture 1.5 was great, but do yourself a favor and buy 2.0 instead. A much improved work of art and less expensive to boot. | ||

| Being an Asian-American born in the US, sometimes we need something to understand Asian cooking and foodstuffs ourselves! I consider Bruce Cost the ultimate Asian food expert considering he's not Asian! Everything is explained in an easy to understand manner and is authentic as any Asian food reference. His Big Bowl cookbook is also excellent. | ||

| Previously I had rated these on the great sound. But having had two pairs of these go bad in one ear or the other in as many years, I am forced to reduce the star rating. These just are not made to last very long and I was very careful with the 2nd pair after the first ones bugged out. This applies to the black ones, I would imagine the white ones are similar. I will not be replacing them with another of the same. | ||
| Zojirushi Mr. Bento Stainless-Steel lined Lunch Jar Lunch Box | ||
![]() | "Better than any lunch box" | 2008-03-04 |
| Amazon.com has this for a good price - there are similar but smaller sets on the market for much more money. You'll more than make up the cost on meals out several times a week by packing your own and everyone knows leftovers taste better the next day! If you are like me and don't like the idea of microwaving your food every day, this keeps food warm until lunch or dinner if preheated before packing. According to instructions, let food cool a bit before capping, and the bowls are microwavable if you prefer to heat up food later. The drawstring bag with zippered side for easy access, adjustable shoulder strap and handle is a great addition along with a stainless steel "spork." I was more than impressed with this. Zojirushi makes and is known for their high quality products and you'll use this set for a very long time. | ||
| Nordic Ware 3-Piece Toaster Oven Grill and Bake Set | ||
![]() | "The Best Compact pans but..." | 2008-02-24 |
| These are the best sized and heavier weight pans for compact counter top ovens, but the finish comes off after several uses. This has been a common complaint, but Nordicware hasn't done anything about it. I continue to use them at my own peril... (is that pepper or pan flakes?) | ||
| Personal Paper Trimmer 12" | ||
![]() | "Great All-around trimmer until..." | 2007-09-21 |
| This is my 2nd Fiskars trimmer in about 15+ years. I didn't hesitate buying a Fiskars replacement. I accidently dropped the thing and lost the orange blade unit. I inserted the replacement blade and it just does not cut the same; not even making contact without several swipes. By that time, I'm not getting a clean edge. The blade unit can only go into the track in one way so I don't get why it's not cutting. Time to look for another more sturdy model... | ||

| Would rather recommend their beautiful magazine and/or PDF publications which come out irregularly. Every issue is a treat. Take caution however; sadly their customer service treats subscription problems with contempt. | ||

![]() | "Can't go wrong with Sandisk" | 2007-03-31 |
| Excellent product, no problems. FYI, Macintosh users, the U3 is not for us and is an irritant as it shows up regardless and there does not appear to be a way to get rid of it. For that I give it 2 stars. Otherwise, it's A-OK. | ||

![]() | "Very Pleased with Canon + Ink Cartridges" | 2006-07-03 |
| Could have sworn this area was for reviews, not venting how one ordered the wrong cartridges. Anyway, I have not had any problems with these ink refills, the resulting print colors are great, the photos are adequate considering my particular Canon i550 printer is not a photo printer. They last fairly long too, compared to my previous Epson printer. | ||
| Apple 512 MB iPod Shuffle MP3 Player M9724LL/A | ||
![]() | "Conveniently Small and Bare Bones" | 2005-02-12 |
| If you absolutely need to look for a particular song you want to hear, then this is not for you. I have a 4G iPod (with view window) and I never even look at it except to find a playlist. Then I put the thing away and zone out. With a Shuffle, you set up your playlist and load. You can play through the list or random play your music. Of course there are always people who stare at their big iPods all the while, looking for specific songs to play, rotating the wheel all over the place and burning up precious energy. Set up your playlists the way you want to hear your songs on iTunes on your computer, load and you'll be good to go! Woof, the lights and buttons and switch takes some getting use to... If you're wondering whether to get the 512 or the 1gig... I don't know if I'd ever listen to 1 gig of music in one sitting before the juice runs out... Believe me, you can get an awful lot of music onto a 512. However if you're also thinking of using the device for file transfers, then the 1 gig would serve both purposes well. A very excellent 2nd iPod for traveling light. And also easy to lose! | ||
| Various Artists - Euphoria: Deeper Shades Of | ||
![]() | "Only 3 words for this... Fab U Lous" | 2004-09-10 |
| This is the my favorite of all the Euphoria collections I own. It runs thin, like liquid gold all through your brain. Who needs drugs?! I don't usually like vocals in electronica compilations, but it all works so well here with expert mix of beat and bass. DJ Jay Burnett lays down tracks like only a genius can. If you're not sure which Euphoria to buy, get this one. I guarantee you will know bliss when you hear it. | ||
| Kensington Studio Mouse Designed for Mac - 64322 | ||
![]() | "Slick Compliment to the G4" | 2003-04-19 |
| Like many others, I waited for this mouse based on the marketing hype. It is quite nice to look at, but the real test is on actual use. The appearance, shape and feel is very nice, it is tapered and almost flat which is ergonomically great for small hands, however I find its squared-off base digs in after long use. I still prefer this over other brand name mice particularly those with "humped" backs which make my hand quite tired. This is my preferred mouse of the many I tried for fit and use. I have no absolutely no problems with Mouseworks and its use in OS X (Jaguar) the current version is available on Kensington.com. The "scrolling" takes some getting use to; it is not a wheel but a touch pad. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because for the amount of money, Kensington could at least have put a better cord on it. Its sticky casing catches on anything in its way, the edge of the keyboard tray for instance. I'm forever pulling the mouse back which is maddening especially when performing detailed mousing in Photoshop. The cheap cord makes for a great case for the wireless Studio Mouse. If only it was affordable. | ||
| UPG-V ADOBE INDESIGN 2.0 MAC | ||
![]() | "Must Have" | 2002-10-28 |
| If you're running OS X, InDesign is a must have for page layout. A very short learning curve particularly if you're familiar with other Adobe design softwares. Since Quark is taking their sweet time coming to the OS X table, I went ahead and tried InDesign and must say I was totally impressed. | ||
| Graphic Design Cookbook: Mix & Match Recipes for Faster, Better Layouts | ||
![]() | "Must Have for all Designers" | 2001-07-01 |
| There is nothing to read (well, except for the introduction), just thousands of "mix & match" line drawings for layout ideas. This recipe book has been around for a while, but you'd never know it. All the ideas are both classic yet fresh. The least amount of money you'll ever spend for gazillions of ideas. A must have in every design library. | ||
