Rated 5 Stars"AKG K240's - No major complaints." 2009-04-26
I've got a small project studio and needed a pair of decent headphones for monitoring. I didn't spend too much time investigating the different makes/models...I knew AKG had a pretty good reputation and I expected the K240's would be a definite upgrade over the consumer-grade cans I was using.

Now, I'm not Daddy Warbucks, so $100 was a fairly substantial investment for me for just a pair of headphones, but I'm satisfied with them. They seem to represent the sounds nice and clear...I'm not going to get into what the frequency range is or anything like that because I'm honestly not that technical.

The headphones seem to block out the majority of the noise in the household. The only minor complaint that I have is that prolonged wearing of these headphones seems to bother my ears. I don't think I have huge dumbo-like ears, but maybe I do!

In my opinion, these are a worthwhile investment although I must also say that I have no other pro-grade headphones in which to compare these with. If you're like me and you were using a pair of $10-30 headphones that you bought at Walmart...you should be happy with the K240's.

Rated 4 Stars"What the bleep?" 2009-02-18
I remember first being exposed to many of the ideas in this book when a friend sent me a copy of "What the bleep do we know!?" Dr. Goswami actually appears on the film and covers many of the core ideas that are presented in the book.

The book goes considerably farther down the rabbit hole. Goswami does a decent job at explaning quantum physics to people who don't understand quantum physics. There were still a few areas that I had difficulty understanding.

Goswami then does his best to tie philosophy, mysticism and religion to quantum physics, suggesting that the brain operates on the quantum level.
Is it true? I can't say that it is true or false, it is merely the belief of Dr. Goswami.

This is another book that I would recommend to anyone who is trying to solve the puzzle of life and death.

This is yet another one of the books that was required for my Arts & Humanities class "The Horror Story"...I must say that I'm quite glad that I was introduced to this novel.

This book houses some of the greatest horror stories since the genre came into existence. I have a new appreciation for Edgar Allen Poe. Algernon Blackwood is an AMAZING writer, quite possibly my new favorite. There is even a story written by O. Henry!

This book could easily be considered a bible among those who are horror-genre fans. I can't say much else about this book other than IN MY OPINION it is worth the money you will spend on it and the time you will spend reading it.

Rated 3 Stars"Required reading for an Arts & Humanities Class" 2007-12-17
This book was used as a text in an Arts & Humanities course that I took in the fall semester "The Horror Story". The class was great...this book wasn't.

Most of the stories in 999: Twenty-nine Original Tales of Horror are far from original. Many of the authors seem to borrow and re-use the same worn out ideas which results in predictable endings. Too many times I found myself knowing what was going to happen before it happened.

We weren't expected to read every story in this book, as some of the tales are not appropriate for the classroom. I did however; take the time to read some of these on my own.

The story that sticks out most in my mind is "The Grave"...

If you are a true horror-genre fanatic, you may enjoy this book much more than I did.

I purchased this book with plans of rebuilding a TH350 transmission. I read through the book and it is quite thorough. It was recommended to me by several other gentlemen who had undertaken rebuilding this tranny and had successfully accomplished the task (by using the book).

This is one of those types of things when you have more time than money and can't afford to put the transmission in a shop for it to be rebuilt. You are going to need a few specialized tools or access to them to get this done.

Nutrient Timing: The Future of Sports NutritionNutrient Timing: The Future of Sports Nutrition
Rated 5 Stars"A must have!" 2006-09-18

I'll admit it...diet and nutrition is not my strong suit. I am pretty diligent about drinking a high glycemic index + protein drink following my workouts...but I never really understood why.

Well this book gets into the nitty-gritty about nutrients and how to time them.

There are areas in the book that are difficult to grasp (at least for me...I'm a real bonehead). This makes for a tough read at times.

I really did my best to strip it down and take out the parts that were useful and apply them. I loaned the book to my training partner and I haven't seen it since!

He's been applying the advice in the book and amazingly, he's maintained his bodyweight over the summer...he has a tough time keeping his weight on because his daily work is physically demanding and he's out in the sun ALL DAY LONG. For a 45 year old guy to make strength gains and maintain his bodyweight...I find it pretty amazing.

Definitely worth the $10 or so...

Rated 5 Stars"Great little machine." 2004-07-08
I've had my hobart 125 for about a year...never welded before purchasing it. WIth a little practice, I've been fairly successful in welding on replacement panels on my project truck. I spent the additional money to buy the gas regulator and solenoid kit...as well as a gas bottle. The gas makes a real difference.

To anyone looking to buy a small machine, I'd stay away from the El' Cheapo welders you see at Walmart and such. Buying a Hobart guarantees that the machine can be serviced locally. The Hobart/Miller company is really great about their service and support. I spent quite a bit of time on their online Forums and the employees and Miller / Hobart have always been very helpful.

I'm doing a partial rebuild on my 454. I picked up this book because I know next to nothing about rebuilding motors. This book gives a pretty thorough walk-through, beginning with removing the block, stripping it down, taking it to the machine shop and reassembling it.

There's good information in the book. My main gripe is the author assumes you'll be reusing most of the same components that you started with. I had planned to put a hotter cam in the motor and I know I need to check the clearance between valves and piston...none of this is covered. He just says slap the heads back on.

This is another book that will probably be nice to have around if you're a beginner.

System of a Down - ToxicitySystem of a Down - Toxicity
Rated 5 Stars"One of the best bands..." 2004-07-08
I've been involved with music all of my life. Since I can remember, my father blazed Sabbath and Ozzy from the stereo. I remember the big-hair bands of the 80's and the grunge bands of the 90's. Exceptional bands have always been far and few between.

People like the Oz-man, who actually orchestrate their music. Not only do the lyrics mean something, but the music has more than 3 chords.

SOAD brings just that to the table. The music is thick...very thick. It's stuff kids can still bang their heads to, but for the real listeners, you can hear some stuff going on. The lyrics...at first glance might seem like your average B.S. not so. Theres a real message to what's being said. Plus I love the switch-up between melodies. good stuff.

The Haynes Welding ManualThe Haynes Welding Manual
Rated 3 Stars"Looking for something more..." 2004-02-04
Guess I am cynical. I just got through writing a review of Finch's welding manual and I still don't have anything great to say about the Haynes Manual.

The Haynes manual is probably better than the Finch book. It gets into a little more detail with the processes and provides useful insight into thing. Shows defective welds etc.

Again, I'd recommend going to one of the welder manufacturer sites like Hobart, Miller or Lincoln and buying a learning set on the process you want to master.

Rated 4 Stars"I own a Hobart Handler 125" 2003-06-30
I'm in the process of trying to restore a 1957 Chevy Pickup truck. I purchased a Hobart Handler 125 from Sears without the MIG package for a very reasonable price.

Although I don't have much experience with welders, my opinion of this machine is pretty high. ...

I've gone through one spool of wire so far, and I haven't encountered any problems whatsoever.

If you're a beginner, this is a very good investment. I'm rather partial to Miller and Hobart products after having dealt with their customer service people...the guys at miller really know their stuff and they are VERY helpful. I cannot comment on Lincoln...but I know when I am ready for a bigger welder, I'll be buying something that is either Blue or White. =)

Metal Fabricator's HandbookMetal Fabricator's Handbook
Rated 3 Stars"Fairly Decent" 2003-06-19
While the Metal Fabricator's Handbook provided some insight into working with metal, it didn't provide as much information as I had expected.

Ron does a good job of detailing the tools you will need to work with metal, but does not spend much time actually showing you what to do.

Most of the projects were presented in a general way, he didn't touch much on the specifics of how to do complete the tasks. It was more like watching a 30 minute show on how to fabricate many parts associated with a race car. Surely you cannot expect to be able to take this information and build a race car.

All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the trade. Even if you manage to learn one thing from this book, it's one thing you didn't know prior to reading it.

Big-Block Chevy Performance: Modifications and Parts Combinations for High Performance Street, Racing, Marine and Off-Road UseBig-Block Chevy Performance: Modifications and Parts Combinations for High Performance Street, Racing, Marine and Off-Road Use
Rated 3 Stars"Fair at best" 2003-06-19
This is a very good book for a beginner, who is mainly interested in using GM/Chevy manufactured parts to build their motor.

I was a little disappointed that the author did not cover more after market parts, and give more examples to building a sound motor.

The author wrote in such a way where you feel like you are in middle school learning about motors.

In summary, fair book, fair price, decent amount of information but not alot on after market parts. More theory, less practical examples.
