![]() | "One of Bette's Best" | 2009-10-07 |
| First things first:
The transfer is crisp and clean overall and the special features (which I usually don't bother with)are fun and interesting. Bette's heyday in the 30's and 40's in which she did her best work in my opinion (She was called "The 5th Warner Brother" and was the undisputed Queen of The Lot. Here, she's at once,willful,high-strung,and at the last,heroic. But what she is here is watchable and it should be no surprise to someone unfamiliar with her work (if such a one exists!) why she was so successful | ||

| All About Eve | ||
![]() | "A Tour de Force On All Counts" | 2009-09-13 |
| "All About Eve" is a fascinating look behind the scenes of what it can take(and sometimes what it can do) to people who live inside show business. While it's about Broadway on the surface, it's also a film about Hollywood and what it takes to be the best in the business (And what happens when youth fades and it's time to move over). The cast is super and the dialogue! Of course,people don't really talk like that(if they ever did)but wouldn't it be fun if we could all be so clever? Davis shines a Margo Channing,the 40ish diva who's about to be stabbed in the back by the poor innocent(read wolf in sheep's clothing)she takes in and trusts. This is a must have DVD,not only because the transfer makes it sparkle,but because...well...it's a damn good movie! | ||
| The Mask of Zorro (Special Edition) | ||
![]() | "A1 Swashbuckler, the way they bused to make 'em!" | 2009-09-13 |
| "The Mask of Zorro" is a rousing,sometimes poignant actioner.full of great performances and, as the title I wrote says,"They don't make 'em like that anymore". Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins,a young ruffian who aspires to heroism and his somewhat reluctant mentor respectively,have wonderful chemistry but the delight and surprise of the is the lovely Catherina Zeta Jones as the spunky,beautiful heroine who can hold her own in a swordfight(and look pretty dandy doing it!) The film is texture and the fight scenes are well choreographed as are the "smaller" moments in the film that give it it's heart. Give this one a look, especially if,like me, you love a good old fashioned adventure film! | ||

![]() | "A Movie Star Is Born" | 2009-03-23 |
| Without a doubt, one of the most smashing film debuts of all time. Barbra sparkles in her first film and hardly shows any awkwardness in front of the camera (easy enough since she'd already played the role) and she looks amazing. Her poise and confidence plus Fannie's belief in her destiny,make this enjoyable on every level. She's also a superb comedienne as witnessed int the "Bride" number which literally brings The Zeigfeild Follies to a screeching halt(much to the chagrin of The Great Zeigfield himself.) The "Don't Rain On My Parade" number was greeted with applause when I saw it in a theater,as did many of the other numbers. A great show! "Funny Lady" is a bit of a dissappointment only in that some of the roles were miscast(James Caan,though good-looking,was no Billy Rose,who was not)but then neither was Nick Arnstein and Omar Sharif is on board to play him again. There's not as much music in this one although what there is,is great(Marvin Hamlish developed someoriginal works) and Ben Vereen has a cameo as well. A better bet all around than buying them seperately | ||

| He had me at "It's Not Unusual" and yup, I thought he was Black! Not only was he NOT Black,he's from bloody Wales. Was there ever (Dusty Springfield notwithstanding)a better example that Soul is Soul and it ranscends race? | ||

![]() | "Why Can't You Give Me The Respect I'm Entitled To!!!" | 2008-04-25 |
| I sat in a movie theater watching in wide-eyed wonder at the image of Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford and I knew I was in for a treat! And Boy,did Faye deliver! She was always a bit over the top with directors that didn't know how to handle her(much like Crawford herself) but I wasn't ready for the spectacle I was about to witness! And I howled with laughter and loved her for it! Yes, Crawford would not likely be voted,"Mother Of The Year" but the image of Faye,dressed in black and her face covered in cold cream and a slash of red lipstick is nothing less than a camp nightmare as she stalks about,ripping clothes from the dreaded wire hangers,he face a Kabuki mask of torment! Faye took her place as a Camp Maddonna with this performance and,if you dare,watch it more than once,even twice. Diana Scarwid is much better in the role of Christina than people give her credit for. Faye plays Joan like high opera and Diana wisely underplays,giving her line reading a gravity that other actresses would have been too cowed to attempt. And, now,The Special Collector's Edition! This is a must-have for so many reasons! | ||
