Rated 3 Stars"Interesting but Frustrating Read Due to Poor Editing" 2009-06-26
I like this book in that you can pick it up, read a little, put it donw and come back weeks later and not need a refresher course when you pick it up again.

That being said, the book is horribly disorganized. The chapters are well marked so that you would THINK you could easily find the exact topic you want, but barely does the chapter begin than it meanders off into a completely different topic. For example, the chapter entitled "The Drawing Room" talked about the drawing room for exactly 2.5 paragraphs. The next sentence told of how important it was for the man doing business in the drawing room to have a well-dressed wife..... form there the chapter spent about 20 pages talking about women's dress and at the end of the chapter the drawing room was mentioned again for only a couple of paragraphs. The majority of the book is that way, which left me frustrated because I was reading the chapter because I was interested in that particular aspect of the Victorian Home, so I did not really concenterate on what I was reading (the off-topic) because the whole time I was thinking how frustrated I was and wanting to get to the subject I was interested in!

Before I begin my review of the product, I want to share something I think UpDown fans will chuckle at:

The other day I was watching an UpDown episode, the one where Miss Elizabeth joins the suffragettes and Rose is sent to Holloway prison. In one scene, one of the other jailed suffragettes attacks Rose, who falls against the wall. I noticed how the wall moved (quite a bit) and looked to be made out of cardboard!

The 25 year Anniversary Special is very well done and very interesting.

Now for the review:

Years ago I wanted to purchase the complete DVD set of "I, Claudius". I had the series on VHS already but wanted DVDs for my mother. I read the reviews how it was poor quality. I did not spend the $150 for the set. I was very appreciative to the reviewers who saved me that money.

Going by my above-mentioned personal experience, I would assume that some reading this have the series on VHS and want to upgrade to DVD. My advice is: DON'T. These DVDs were not remastered at all; I don't care what the description says. The DVD set is no better than the VHS. The beginning intro (the music and cartoons from Punch magazine) is cut off in several episodes. There are numerous episodes where the tape (thus the DVD) jumped and the picture is momentarily distorted. Images are fuzzy and the colors are off.

My last advice is if you can wait, wait a couple of years when it is the 40th anniversary of the series. No doubt remastered digital DVDs will be produced at that time as most films are on anniversaries.

Rated 5 Stars"EXCELLENT PRODUCT -- I WAS ALERTED AT LEAST A MINUTE PRIOR TO THE CITY'S SIREN SYSTEM" 2007-06-12
I was able to test this product last week when a series of storms rolled through our area in the middle of the night.

At 2:33 a.m. my partner and I were catapulted from deep sleep by the alarm going off full blast (my fault; I set the "alarm" on high, but "medium" and "low" are other options, as well as having a voice alert you). The alarm went off a minute before the sirens actually sounded, which, as we all know, has meant the difference between life and death during some tornadoes that developed so quickly and hit before the city's sirens could be sounded. Of course if your significant other is as groggy as mine was (I had jab his biceps and in a final attempt push him out of bed), you'll need to take extra measures.

I like the size of the unit; it is not too small, nor too big. I am also becomming a bit of a weather geek, as with the press of a button I am able to hear weather forecasts continually; no more waiting for "Your forecast on the 8s"/evening news on tv/after news updates on the radio.

This model allows one to set alerts for individual counties. You can also set the alerts for the type of warning (tornado watch, thunderstorm warning, etc.)A little light will also go on to show you advisories, so you do not have to have an alarm sound just for that. I also like the Amber alert option, which of course notifies of child abductions.

I highly recommend this as a gift to friends and family; you'll worry less.

Rated 5 Stars"If You Know How to Use an X-Acto Knife, You Can Use This For Your Video iPod" 2006-09-21
Yesterday I received a birthday FedEx from my sweetheart; a video iPod! (Satchmo's "St. Louis Blues" never sounded so good)! I am also excited to be able to listen to my "News from Lake Wobegon" at my leisure.

I bought the screen shield right away as well as the iGlove (I highly recommend both; especially the screen shield, it completely disappears).

My best friend had bought the iSnug for full price and she loves it. I read the user's post who said it does not fit his video iPod because of the location of the headphone groove in the iSnug. I went out and bought it anyway and used an X-Acto knife to cut the groove for the headphones.

This set also comes with a foam insert for the iPod mini (both inserts are removeable) but instead of throwing it out, I placed it right on top of my iPod (in effect, "sandwiching" my iPod between both foam inserts); I have double the protection and it zips up with no effort. If you put the iGlove over your video iPod, your iPod will NOT fit into the foam insert unless you again use the X-Acto knife and cut out a larger "frame" (or remove the iGlove, obviously).

This movie is so wonderful - the sets, the color, the costumes. The music was beautiful and whenever I watch this I wish I could jump in and join in the feast and the theatrical plays the March sisters put on.

This movie is right up there with "Beaches" and "Gone with the Wind" as far as tearjerkers go.

The characters are wonderful - I especially like Beth, Laurie and Laurie's grandfather, and Professor Behr. Claire Danes as Beth I liked very much; the scene where Laurie's grandfather gives her the piano was so touching, I sobbed.

I can't make it through the scene where Laurie declares his love for Jo without about ten tissues; my heart aches for him in this scene.

I agree with most of the other reviews that Samantha Mathis as the older Amy was all wrong for this film - she was stilted and very cold and Bale's Laurie was the complete opposite.

I like to watch this movie at Christmastime too - it would make a great gift for an 8-12 year old girl.

... and therefore I was not disppointed. While the book is missing a lot of the warmth of its prequel, it has some moments, such as Frank returning to Ireland from America the first time and overcome with emotion, weeps at the first sight of the Emerald Isle as his airplane approaches the coast.

The hilarious moments are not missing either, such as being mistaken for a homosexual with a lemon meringue pie in the restroom of a movie theatre, mistaking a bathmat for a bath towel, and wondering who washes the Pope's underwear and deciding it must be some blind nuns in the basement of the Vatican.

The book had some real dark parts and also, Frank seemed to at times, turn into a perverted, drunken and unfaithful user jerk, which made me not like him as much. Despite this, I found his determination to get a good job and build a career very inspiring. His selflessness with regards to the welfare of his family made him was interesting; he never seemed to forget where he came from.

I highly recommend "The McCourts of Limerick" on VHS.

I first listened to this book on audio. I would recommend listening to this version if you are battling insomnia. The narrator's voice is very soothing (DO NOT listen to this book while driving, it is a bit TOO hypnotic). I felt it matched the scenery and mood of the book.

I agree with the one review that said the original murder should have been the whole story. The characters in the modern story very very one dimensional and there was nothing about them that I could relate to. The characters in the murder story were much more realistic and seemed to be more like real people.

The book was much like the Zodiac in the book, it bobbed up and down on waves and I felt seasick from trying to keep the two storylines straight. It seemed like every other parapgraph it was murder story/modern story and so on. Had I truly seen the common thread in these two storylines, it would have been easier to keep the two straight.

I too guessed at the end and it was the last pages that I thought the story became very interesting.

Frank McCourt beautifully narrates his masterpeice of work.

I have read reviews which rated the book as "awful" because it was too depresssing. Apparently they skimmed right passed the wonderful humor in this book that had me roaring with laughter, or the lyrical style, charm and warmth Mr. McCourt brings forth.

The abridged version of the audio does in fact sound kind of depressing because a lot of the humor from the book is missing and it takes away from the novel (you have to admire someone who had such a childhood and yet has such humor in retelling it).

No one could have narrated this book better than Mr. McCourt; he has a wonderful brogue and he tells stories of his mischief as a boy as if he were still that little mischievous boy. He narrates his book like the the quintessential grandfather telling stories in a chair in front of the hearth.

Not even Richard Burton narrates better than Frank McCourt.

The sequel to this book, 'TIS, has also been narrated by Mr. McCourt onto audio.
