| Koss KSC75 Portable Stereophone Sport Headphones | ||
![]() | "Fantastic sound in a small package at a great price" | 2009-10-06 |
| I own a set of Koss PortaPro headphones, which are arguably the best-sounding portable headphones on the market. Despite their portability, they have become my favorite "at home" headphones as well.
Recently I decided that I wanted something smaller and even more portable than the PortaPros, for when I'm taking walks, on the train, etc. I hate "ear bud" style headphones, and wanted something without a head band. After doing some research, I found the Koss KSC75 portable 'phones. I wasn't sure how good they would be, considering how low the price was, but figured I'd give them a shot anyway. What a pleasant surprise! These small, lightweight headphones sound nearly as good as my PortaPros, and are even more comfortable. Best of all, I can wear these while wearing a hat or a baseball cap, which wasn't really possible with the PortaPros. They're also a bit more inconspicuous than the PortaPros, which are kind of difficult to conceal. I'm so happy that I found these, and I would highly recommend them to anyone who wants a small, light, comfortable headphone at a great price!
| Culligan FM-15DIY Faucet Mount Water Filtration System (FM-15A) | ||
![]() | "Finally, a good quality faucet-mount water filter" | 2009-09-28 |
| I've been using a Brita filter pitcher for the past seven years. It still works fine, but I've gotten tired of having to constantly replace the filters, and it seems like the new filters aren't doing quite as good a job as the old ones, so I decided to look into a faucet filter. I immediately ruled out the ones made by Brita and PUR after reading all the bad reviews.
When I came across this filter from Culligan and saw the high number of favorable reviews, I decided to give it a try. I've had the Culligan FM-15A for a couple of weeks and so far, so good! It does a nice job of making my water taste better. It doesn't taste quite as lovely as a cold bottle of Poland Spring, but it does taste as good as, or slightly better than, the water I used to get from my Brita pitcher. Installation was simple and took about five minutes. The only tricky part was trying to figure out which adapter to use in my internally-threaded faucet. After that, it was smooth sailing. The instructions say that the filter core is good for two months or 200 gallons. Since I live alone and certainly don't drink 200 gallons of water every two months (I probably drink a gallon a day at the very most, which would be 60 gallons every two months), I wasn't exactly sure when I should replace the filter. I sent an e-mail to Culligan and received a reply the next day. They stated the most important factor is how much water has passed through the filter. So, if you're like me, you can get away with replacing the filter every six months or so. On the other hand, if you have a big family that consumes more than 200 gallons every two months, you may need to replace it sooner than that. I would suggest measuring your drinking water usage for a couple of days, and then sitting down with a calculator to figure out how often you should replace your filter. I'm absolutely thrilled that I'll only have to replace mine every six months! One final note: the product description on this page (as of the day I'm writing this review) says that the product has a five year warranty; however, the product I received has only a two year warranty. Five would have been nice, but two is still better than one. Hopefully Amazon will update the description accordingly.
| Pine Tar Soap - 4.25 oz. - Bar | ||
![]() | "Not a bad soap, if you can get past the smell..." | 2009-07-07 |
| Let me start by saying that I KNEW this soap had a very unique smell, described by other reviewers as being similar to a campfire. I thought that would be fine, since I love camping and campfires. Unfortunately, the soap I received smells nothing like a campfire; rather, it smells like a pile of burning tires. Or like burning garbage. (Having grown up in the country, I know what both of those things smell like.) Anyway, despite the awful smell, I tried using this soap several times. Contrary to what is written on the packaging, it did not lather white; the lather was more of a brownish-yellow. Fortunately it didn't seem to leave any discoloration on my skin. But the main reason that I won't be using this soap again is because the smell stayed on my skin for a very long time... 8+ hours. I could have lived with the brown lather and the nasty smell IF the smell had not stayed on my skin... but there is no way I'm going to go out in public smelling like a trash fire. Not gonna happen! I really, really wanted to like this soap. I've been searching for something that would help with acne and seb derm, and this soap seems to get a lot of good reviews from folks with those conditions. I'm wondering if the manufacturer changed the formula or something, because the soap I received is just nasty and is not like the soap described in the other reviews. Anyway, give it a try, but be prepared to smell like ashes and cinders. | ||
| Brikka 4-Cup Coffee Pot | ||
![]() | "Bought 3 Brikkas, all three were defective" | 2007-08-24 |
| This isn't much of a review, but I wanted to let people know that there may be several batches of defective Brikkas floating around on the market. So far I've gone through three of them and all three were defective -- very poorly machined, sharp jagged edges, gaskets that don't fit, loose safety valves, etc. Maybe I'll try again at some point in the future once the defective batches have disappeared. Hopefully Bialetti's quality control will improve by then. On the bright side, Amazon makes it very easy to return defective merchandise. Kudos for that. | ||
| ALLSOP 56500 CD Lens Cleaner | ||
![]() | "Brought my skippy CD player back to life" | 2006-05-14 |
| This product really does make a difference. I had an older CD player that was doing a lot of skipping, and sometimes it would not function at all. I ran the cleaning disc through it once, and now it's working just fine. Great item to have around even if you only need to use it once a year... certainly beats having to buy a new CD or DVD player! | ||
| New Skin Liquid | ||
![]() | "Ouch!" | 2005-08-13 |
| This stuff stings like crazy. It smells worse than rubber cement. It takes 10-15 minutes for it to dry, and you can't do anything until it's dry. Within a few hours is starts to peel off, and if you try to peel it off completely, it reopens your wound. Awful, awful stuff. | ||

| Vornado 610W Performer Air Circulator - Whitestone | ||
![]() | "Expensive, but perhaps worth the price" | 2005-06-11 |
| I was very hesitant to shell out sixty bucks for a small table fan, but after going through five traditional fans of varying sizes and prices, and having to return all of them because they were either too loud or too flimsy (or both), I caved in and bought this Vornado.
The amount of air this fan is capable of moving is impressive considering its size. It isn't quite as powerful as the Vornado lookalike (made by Honeywell) that I bought and then returned, but it's definitely a lot quieter. It's also smaller and can be taken apart for cleaning -- something I can't say about the lookalike. The fact that this fan is made in the USA and has a lifetime warranty are certainly good selling points. Still, I just wish it wasn't so expensive.

| HONEYWELL ENVIRACAIRE HF810 Turbo High-Velocity Table Fan | ||
![]() | "Not a Vornado, but gets the job done" | 2005-06-07 |
| This fan is neither as powerful nor as quiet as the Vornado fan it tries to imitate, but compared to some of the other fans on the market today, the Honeywell Mega Turbo is pretty darn good. It moves an impressive amount of air, is solidly constructed, and comes with a reassuring 5-year warranty.
UPDATE: I just discovered that this fan cannot be taken apart for cleaning. I would change the rating to two stars if I could.
| Kensington 72121 Optical Mouse Elite USB/PS2 | ||
![]() | "A truly high-quality mouse" | 2005-06-07 |
| I have nothing but good things to say about this mouse. Kensington is legendary for the quality of its mice and trackballs, and this mouse continues that tradition, despite its low price. The 5-year warranty is very reassuring, and Kensington tech support is unbeatable (in the unlikely event that you need it). This mouse is very comfortable for both right-handed and left-handed users. It is extremely accurate and precise, and works flawlessly with Macs as well as Windows PCs. The MouseWorks software is arguably the best mouse driver ever written. My only complaint, and a minor one at that, is that I wish it came in an all-black version, rather than black & silver. Other than that, I would heartily recommend it to anybody who wants a premium quality mouse at a reasonable price. | ||
| Wind Tunnel with Remote Control | ||
![]() | "anything but quiet" | 2005-06-05 |
| This fan is anything but "whisper quiet." In fact, when this fan is on the low setting, it is louder than my air conditioner on high. I don't mind noise and I can sleep through just about anything, but I couldn't sleep with this fan, even on low. Nevertheless, it does generate a very good amount of air, and if noise is not a primary concern, it might be the perfect fan for you. It is made in the USA and seems to be of "average" quality and construction (which isn't saying much, considering the quality of most fans these days). It comes with a remote control and has a built-in timer; both are very useful features. | ||
| 24" Flat Screen Trinitron WEGA TV KV-24FS120 | ||
![]() | "If you can't afford HDTV, check this out" | 2005-02-05 |
| If you can't afford HDTV but want the highest quality possible from conventional analog television, take a look at this Sony. The picture quality is superb, with clean, lifelife colors that aren't overblown or oversaturated like so many other TVs. I haven't experienced any geometry problems with my unit. The audio quality isn't amazing, but is above average. The remote control is easy to use, and the menus are simple and intuitive. I really like the size of this TV -- the cabinet isn't a whole lot deeper than my previous 19" TV, and the screen isn't so big that it looks ridiculous in my small apartment. I'm very glad I paid a little more money for a TV that offers a lot more in terms of quality. | ||
| Samsung TX-P2036 20" Flat Screen Television | ||
![]() | "speaker issues" | 2005-02-02 |
| I bought one of these two days ago, and unfortunately I'm having the same speaker problems described by the previous reviewer. The right speaker stopped working, and would occasionally make buzzing/static noises. I also noticed an extremely loud and irritating "hum" when I plugged my headphones into the headphone jack. I'm very disappointed, because this TV was wonderful for the first 48 hours -- gorgeous picture quality, amazing sound (for a TV anyway -- not as good as my stereo system, but better than the other TVs I looked at, including Sony). Looks like Samsung may have a lemon with this model. I hope they can fix it, because the design and features of this TV are really nice, and the fact that it's $50 less than a comparable Sony -- and with better audio quality -- is a big selling point. | ||

![]() | "works really well" | 2004-10-20 |
| I love this stuff. This is the first natural deodorant that actually works for me. The others didn't work at all, or didn't work well enough. This one keeps me dry and odor-free for 8-10 hours. The fragrance is mild and is suitable for a man or a woman. I've found that I have to use a lot of it, though. If I put on just one coat of it, it doesn't work. I need to really slather it on. | ||

| Bodum Eileen 3-Piece Coffee Press Gift Set - Stainless Steel | ||
![]() | "the best way to make coffee" | 2004-08-25 |
| Now that I've discovered how incredibly quick, easy and enjoyable it is to make coffee with a French press, there's no way I'll ever go back to an automatic drip coffee maker ever again. This French press from Bodum is incredibly attractive (the photo online doesn't do it justice). It will make a great addition to your kitchen, and it makes an interesting conversation piece as well. The best part, of course, is the delicious coffee you can make with it. All you need is boiling water. Wait five minutes, and then your coffee is ready. Compared to an automatic drip coffee maker, coffee made using a French press is smoother, more flavorful, richer, and just more enjoyable in every way. This particular set from Bodum is particularly nice because it comes with two matching coffee cups. I love it! | ||
| Koss PortaPro Traditional Collapsible DJ Headphones with Carry Case | ||
![]() | "the best lightweight headphones money can buy" | 2004-08-25 |
| I adore these headphones. They are definitely the best portable/lightweight headphones I have used. Amazing frequency response across the entire range. Very comfortable, even if you're wearing glasses. The lifetime warranty is a big plus too. | ||
| HP PSC 1350 All-in-One Printer, Scanner, Copier | ||
![]() | "Great printer; not a very good scanner" | 2004-02-06 |
| The HP PSC 1350 is an excellent color inkjet printer. Text and images are clear and vibrant. Unfortunately, the built-in flatbed scanner leaves much to be desired. Colors come out looking "washed out" or inaccurate. The images are blurry, and if you apply the built-in sharpening, the edges become jagged. Nevertheless, the scanner is good enough for making quick black & white copies like you would with a Xerox machine. Just don't expect it to be good enough for photographs. Get a real scanner for that. | ||
| Maine Atlas and Gazetteer (Maine Atlas & Gazetteer) | ||
![]() | "Maine Bible" | 2003-12-27 |
| The Maine Atlas & Gazetteer by DeLorme should also be known as "The Maine Bible." Every Mainer should own one. All too often I've tried those web sites that are supposed to give you driving directions, and inevitably they give me an error message saying "that location was not found" when I try to get directions to places in rural Maine. You'll never have to worry about that with the Gazetteer. Every Maine city, town, village or plantation is listed in this book, no matter how obscure it is. | ||
