Rated 4 Stars"A decent introduction to the G.L. Corps" 2009-09-15
I'm a huge fan of WB's renderings of the DC Universe. I was really looking forward to watching this movie but then I saw some bad reviews and became hesitant. When I finally bit the bullet, I was pleasantly surprised. Green Lantern: First Flight is a very good movie. As always, the voice actors are very well cast. Christopher Meloni is great as Hal Jordan and Victor Garber is perfect as Sinestro. The animation is just plain fun to watch.

The storyline was well written with the exception of a few things that bothered me. The use of the words "hell" and "ass" seemed a little awkward. I don't have a problem with the language it just didn't seem to fit for this movie. I guess they tried to throw that in for the PG-13 rating but it just seemed odd to me.

A bigger problem I had with the story was that Hal Jordan had absolutely no trouble learning how to use his ring. In fact, it seemed like he just instinctively knew how to use it. There was no training sequence or anything. He just goes from being Hal Jordan: Test Pilot to Hal Jordan: Green Lantern. Now, I never followed the comic books, so maybe that's how it works, but I recall an episode of Justice League where Green Lantern, John Stewart, has to re-learn how to use his ring and it implied that there is a training program that new recruits have to go through.

Anyway, there's also a bar scene that seems like it's straight out of Star Wars and the Guardians reminded me a little of "the great and powerful Oz" combined with the old men hecklers from The Muppets...at least at the beginning when Jordan first meets them. At any rate, these problems were easily overlooked, on my part, and did not detract from my enjoyment of the film.

On to the special features...On Disc 1, we get a sneak peak at the upcoming Superman/Batman: Public Enemies (Two-Disc Special Edition), which looks promising. There are also previews for DC's other animated movies, which I didn't watch because I've already seen them all. There is also a featurette on a DC Comics event, which I wasn't interested in because I don't follow the comics. On Disc 2, they go into the Green Lantern comic book series with one of its writers. I'm guessing long-time fans of the series will probably enjoy that more than the average viewer.

There are profiles on Sinestro and the Guardians by the same DC writer, which was somewhat interesting. Also included is an episode of the Daffy Duck cartoon, Duck Dodgers "The Green Loontern", in which Daffy accidentally receives a Green Lantern Corps ring. We get two episodes from Justice League Unlimited, "The Once and Future Thing, parts 1&2" (part 2 briefly features Green Lantern, Hal Jordan). I was somewhat disappointed with the special features. None of it really had to do with the movie, itself. All of the info I got on the movie was from the preview included on the Wonder Woman 2009 (Two-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy).

I almost forgot to mention that, inside the DVD case, is a paper containing a code that you can use to download a free digital copy of the movie. I was able to download a copy for my PC and another for a portable device. The PC copy works fine using Windows Media Player. The portable copy also works on my computer but because it is protected, I was unable to transfer it to another device.

Rated 5 Stars"Batman TAS, Vol. 2...Another great addition" 2009-09-07
I'm sort of working my way backwards through the Batman TAS collection. I started with Vol.4, then 3, and I recently got Vol. 2 for my birthday. So far, this is the best volume.

What can I add to the praises of this show that has not already been said? The animation, voice acting, and storylines are, of course, amazing. We get 28 great epidsodes of the series in this volume. Some of my favorites include: "Almost Got 'Im," "The Man Who Killed Batman," "Zatanna," and "Joker's Wild." Batman goes up against villains like The Joker, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Clayface, The Riddler, The Penguin, Catwoman, and several others. Robin/Dick Grayson also makes a few appearances and we get to see his origin story. There's also a hint of Batgirl.

The special features are really good in this volume. There are commentaries on the episodes "Robin's Reckoning, Part 1," "Heart of Steel, Part 2," "Almost Got 'Im," and "Harley and Ivy." There are three featurettes: "Robin Rising," "Gotham's Guardians," and "Voices of the Knight." I found them all very interesting, especially getting to see the voices behind the characters.

This is another great edition from Warner Brothers and DC Comics. I'm looking forward to completing my set with Volume 1.

SanDisk Sansa Fuze 8 GB MP3 PlayerSanDisk Sansa Fuze 8 GB MP3 Player
Rated 4 Stars"Fun little device" 2009-09-03
I received the SandDisk Sansa Fuze 8GB player (in silver) as a birthday gift. I asked for this player, specifically, because of all the great reviews I'd read here on Amazon. So far, I've not been disappointed. I've had it for 5 days, now. I should note that it was not purchased through Amazon and it is refurbished.

First of all, I was surprised at how small the player is. I'd seen pictures comparing it to a credit card but I was still amazed when I opened the package. It feels sturdy enough but looks like it can be easily scratched. I recommend purchasing the Transparent Clear Crystal Snap On Hard Case for SanDisk Sansa Fuze, which will protect it from any scratches and most damage. It even covers the screen. Also, (FYI) the silver Fuze is darker than it appears in the pictures. It's more of a slate gray color. It doesn't bother me but it may be important to some people.

This is my very first Mp3 player and it did not come with a guidebook. Unfortunately, it was not immediately recognized by my computer and I had to do some updating with my Windows Media Player (upgraded to version 11). But, the problems were quickly and easily corrected and I went to work copying my CDs and converting them to Mp3s. I used mainly the 320 Kbps bit rate for the best quality and I fit just under 700 songs with about 1.5GB left on the memory. I still have some CDs left to copy and a lot of songs I'd like to download, so I'll have to buy a memory card.

I had minimal difficulty transfering music from my computer to the Fuze. WMP made it very easy to do. I did have a few problems when I tried deleting music files from my computer, it also deleted them from my Fuze. I had to go back and re-do everything. Fortunately, the files were just in my Recycle Bin and easily replaced. I am afraid to delete anything, now, though I'm sure it can be done because I had successfully done it the day before without losing anything from the Fuze. Another problem came when, for some reason, one song on an album wasn't identified when all the others were. It was listed on my Fuze as "Unknown Title" and after listening to it, I was able to figure out the artist and then find the name of the song. I had to re-copy it and so forth to get the correct title on the Fuze.

I've been using the Sansa headphones (earbuds) that came with the player and the music sounds very good. I also received a portable speaker for the player(similar to DB Portable Foldable Speakers for Mp3 Players - Black). It's a cheap little set-up but will probably be good for travel. Anyway, one problem I noted is that the speakers are hooked up to the player through the headphone jack, which is located on the bottom of the player. This requires me to set the player upsidedown on the little platform. It's more of an annoyance than anything. Eventually, I hope to have a nice speaker set-up that is connected through the actual dock connector port.

Navigation through the menu screens was a little difficult, at first, (keep in mind that this is my first Mp3 player) but it only took a few minutes to work it out. I like that it has a shuffle option. I can just hit Play All and it will shuffle through my entire collection. FINALLY!! I don't have to continuously change out CDs or try to decide which CDs I want to play. But if I do want to just listen to one CD/album or to all the music by one particular artist/group, I can. Music is listed by either individual song titles, by album, by artist, or by genre.

I briefly tried the FM Radio option. The sound came in clear and I usually get bad reception on radios where I live. I have just put one picture on the Fuze, to try it, and it looks good. Of course, the screen is rather small for decent viewing.

I have not tried loading any video or audio books on to my Fuze, yet, nor have I created any play lists but it is something I'm looking forward to trying. I will try to update my review when I have tried them and have used the player a little more.

Batman - The Animated Series, Volume Three (DC Comics Classic Collection)Batman - The Animated Series, Volume Three (DC Comics Classic Collection)
Rated 4 Stars"Batman TAS + The Adventures of Batman & Robin" 2009-08-18
Since it has already been established what a great series this was, I don't feel I need to say much in regards to the quality of the show. I will only state that this is a wonderful program that's suitable for both children and adults. The storylines are interesting and entertaining, the voice actors are always top notch, and the animations are amazing. As a child, I enjoyed this series when it first came out and I'm happy to have it on DVD as an adult.

The description on the back of the DVD box states that this is the final 28 episodes of the series but according to the episode lists on the inside of the fold-out case, there are 29 episodes in this volume. On Disc 3, the episodes start switching from "Batman The Animated Series" to "The Adventures of Batman and Robin," where Robin becomes a more prominent character. As far as I can see there is no major difference between the two, other than the opening theme. The animations, voice acting, and storylines are mostly on par with what we have come to expect from TAS.

In this volume, we get to see some already established villains like The Joker, Poison Ivy, Two Face, The Riddler, etc. Harley Quinn gets a couple of really good episodes ("Harlequinade" & "Harley's Holiday"). We meet some new bad guys, like Ventriloquist/Scarface and Lock-Up. This set also includes several episodes featuring Batman's most powerful enemy, Ra's al Ghul ("The Demon's Quest Parts I&II," "Avatar," & "Showdown," in which the hero Johah Hex makes an appearance).

This volume is sort of bookended by Batgirl. The very fist episode is a two-parter, called "Shadow of the Bat," in which Barbara Gordon makes her first appearance as Batgirl. The final episode, "Batgirl Returns," shows her teaming up with Catwoman to catch a thief. These episodes are fun to watch, especially for us girls.

This volume is a little disappointing in the special features department. We get commentaries on the episodes "Read My Lips," "House and Garden," and "Harlequinade". There is short but interesting documentary called "Gotham's New Knight," featuring the series creators commenting on the addition of Batgirl.

I don't, yet, own Volumes 1 and 2 (I started with 4 and am working my way backwards) so I'm not sure how it compares special features-wise. I've been a little disappointed with vols 3 and 4. I'm hoping 1 and 2 have some more in-depth stuff. Despite that, I'm glad to own this series and am looking forward to completing my collection.

Emma was the first Jane Austen book I've ever read &, originally, I liked it much more than Pride And Prejudice but I've since changed my mind. While I love this book, it's not my favorite anymore.

Emma is such a fun character because she is so sure that what she's doing is right when all the while she's just making a mess of things. The best part about her is that when she sees that she is wrong, she can laugh at herself & learn from her mistakes.

Mr. Knightly is one of my favorite Austen characters. His name says it all, "knightly." He is the perfect gentlemen...possibly moreso than Mr. Darcy, even.

The characters in this book, as in all Jane Austen books, represent both the follies & goodness in human nature, which is what I love about her writing. This is a wonderful book that I highly recommend for anyone new to Jane Austen.

Mansfield Park (Penguin Classics)Mansfield Park (Penguin Classics)
Rated 3 Stars"Jane Austen's Third Novel" 2009-05-16
First of all, the heroine's name is Fanny. I'm sorry but I can't get past the name. I know it was probably a very popular & fashionable name back when the book was published but for me, names are very important, & this is a horrible one.

Other than her name, I like Fanny. She is very quiet & kind, despite being treated exactly like the unwanted relation that she was. She has an enormous amount of patience to put up with all the idiocy that surrounds her. She always does what she believes to be right even when it seems like the whole world is trying to push her in the opposite direction.

Fanny has two love interests. Her first love is her cousin that she's grown up with, almost as brother & sister, which makes it even more weird to our modern world. But I suppose it's not so unusual for their time & it's understandable since she probably didn't know that many young men & no one was as kind to her as Edmund was. He was basically her only friend.

Her second love interest is the charming Henry Crawford, a new neighbor to Mansfield Park. He & his sister have moved to the country from London. They are everything that is fashionable & turn the Bertram family upsidedown. At first he does not really like Fanny, she is just something to help him pass the time while his sister flirts with Edmund. He notices how quiet & reserved she is & his first goal is to make her attach herself to him. As he persists & gets to know her, he actually starts to genuinely care for her (as genuinely as a man like him can care, anyway).

Will Fanny hold on to her love for Edmund or will she fall for the charms of Henry. Will Edmund continue to be blinded by Mary Crawford's beauty & wit? You'll have to read the book to find out...or, I suppose, you could watch one of the films.

This story is somewhat different than Austen's other books. Most Austen fans will say that this is not their favorite & I agree. I do still enjoy it, though, & have read it several times because I just can't get enough of her storytelling.

Batman - Mystery of the BatwomanBatman - Mystery of the Batwoman
Rated 3 Stars"There's a new Bat in town" 2009-05-12
Mystery of the Batwoman is the third movie based on Batman: The Animated Series. To briefly surmise, there's a new Bat-person flying about Gotham & she's hitting the crime bosses where it hurts. Now, Batman has to figure out who she is & which side of the law she's on.

This film features the same quality animation as seen in The New Batman Adventures. The storyline is good & the voice acting, as always, is top notch. I will say that the mystery was not that difficult to unravel but that didn't take away from my enjoyment of the film. The new Batwoman character is loosely based on the DC Comics heroine. There are also some familiar faces, Robin (Tim Drake), Barbara Gordon (very briefly), the Penguin, & Bane.

The special features include some interesting commentaries & character bios. There's also a PC game, which I haven't tried, yet. Overall, I enjoyed this movie & recommend it for Batman fans. It's a nice addition to my collection.

Rated 5 Stars"Not just for comic book fans" 2009-02-15
I will begin by saying that I am not a comic book reader but after reading this book, I'm considering taking it up. I wanted this book because I am a fan of the animated TV shows featuring heroes from the DC comics (i.e. Batman TAS, Justice Leage, Justice League Unlimited). I wanted to learn more about all of these characters that I had grown fond of, so I asked for this book for Christmas & got it.

The hardcover is fairly large. It features heroes & villains in alphabetical order. It gives a brief but detailed summary of each character's history. There is a short profile on each that includes their "real" name, occupation, status (hero/villain), height, weight, eye/hair color, & description of their powers or talents. It also features at least one illustration of the character. The more prominent figures get a larger spread (Batman gets 4 pages, for instance). There are layouts featuring famous vehicles, weapons, team-ups, & romances from the comics.

I have looked through this book many times since I got it. I have found it extremely interesting & helpful. Of course, I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the information. Like I said, I'm seriously considering getting into comic books. I also received the Marvel Comics edition, & between the two, this one seems to be more thorough. This is an amazing volume.

I missed this movie when it first came out. Within the last few years, I've gotten back into watching my favorite cartoons from my childhood. Batman: TAS is one of them. I've seen all the other animated movies on Cartoon Network (Subzero, Mystery of the Batwoman, Gotham Knight, Return of the Joker). This is, by far, the best.

The story line is compelling & the animation is top notch. We get to see a young Bruce Wayne as he begins his career as Batman. Very interesting. The voice talents have also done an amazing job. Kevin Conroy has become one of my favorite people to listen to.

The only downside is with the DVD itself. There are no special features, other than the theatrical trailer. It's a two-sided DVD (standard/widescreen).

I received this deck as a gift, for my birthday, along with two other decks by Doreen Virtue: Magical Unicorn Oracle Cards and Magical Messages from the Fairies Oracle Cards: A 44-Card Deck and Guidebook.

First, I will start with appearance. The mermaid cards come in a nice, sturdy box. The picture shown at the top of this page is the cover of the box. This picture is also on the back of each card. The cards seem to be thick & durable. They did stick together, at first, but after several uses the problem seems to have gone away. The pictures on the faces of the cards are taken from a variety of artists. While I would not call all of them beautiful, they all have pleasing colors & are interesting to look at. The only negative, if you can call it that, is the lack of gold edging. The other two decks have gold edging on their cards that really brings out the magic of the cards (visually). These cards do seem to be thicker, though.

There is a guidebook that fits inside the box. The introduction gives a little history on the use of oracle cards & explains their purpose. It gives instructions on how to do a reading for yourself or someone else. It also has a list of all the cards & their meanings. At the back of the book, there is a list of each card's illustration & it's artist.

Readings are very simple & the cards are easy to interpret without looking in the book. The name of each card is printed at the top & a short explanation is given at the bottom of the card. In the few readings that I've done for myself, I have found the cards to be very accurate & insightful. I find that they help me to relax & find a little peace in my stressful life.

Keira Knightly's interpretation of Elizabeth Bennet was ridiculous. She made Lizzy out to be sort of a snot. Elizabeth would never have disrespected her mother the way Knightly's version did in this movie. It was not true to the book, to the character, or to the period. Perhaps it was bad directing & not completely the actress's fault but that totally ruined the movie, for me.

I have it, mostly, for emegergencies. It's still stylish enough that I don't feel left behind. The sound quality is great & I get reception almost everywhere (I have AT&T). I have Phone Tools, so I can create my own ringtones & wallpapers for free. This phone is perfect for my basic needs.

He made me a copy of the game, which I took home & would play for hours on end. At first glance, the game doesn't seem that interesting. But after you start building your city & see it start to grow & progress, it's hard to pull yourself away. It's pretty easy to get the hang of & the graphics are quite realistic. I am looking forward to trying the new edition of the game.

Kodak Easyshare Z812IS 8.2MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Image Stabilized ZoomKodak Easyshare Z812IS 8.2MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
Rated 5 Stars"Kodak EasyShare Z812 IS, 8.1 Mega Pixels" 2008-07-26
As stated in my title, I have the 8.1MP version. I am writing my review here because my version is not available on Amazon. From what I can see, my camera looks exactly like the 8.2MP version. It has a 2.5in./6.4cm LCD screen. It is also High Definition. There are different mode settings for the flash (auto/off, red eye, fill), focus (close-up/macro, landscape, manual, normal), & drive(self-timer, burst, exposure bracketing, normal). There are several capture modes for the camera including smart scene, which analyzes the scene you are photographing & choses the best settings for that situation. There are other settings that allow for more artistic control over your photos, panoramic views, videos, & more. Overall, this camera takes great pictures & is easy to use.
My camera, which was not purchased through Amazon, came with a shoulder strap, lens cover, USB cable, video cable, cd-rom software, & instruction booklet.
For use with this camera, I also recommend:

Mermaids: Sirens of the SeaMermaids: Sirens of the Sea
Rated 5 Stars"Mermaids galore" 2008-01-03
Don't be fooled by the somewhat bland cover of this book. The pages within contain lots of wonderful mermaid images. This book is a compiliation of mermaid art. It features mostly paintings but it also includes a few carvings, statues, jewelry, and others. Each page displays a picture along with a quote that relates to mermaids, to the sea, or invokes the spirit of either. These quotes are taken from poems, plays, journals, ancient writings, etc.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves mermaids or beautiful art. If you like this book, Mermaids (Magical Beings) is very similar. If you want to learn more about mermaids, I recommend Magickal Mermaids and Water Creatures and The Mythology of the Mermaid and Her Kin.

Saturday Night Live - The Best of Molly ShannonSaturday Night Live - The Best of Molly Shannon
Rated 3 Stars"A good collection..." 2007-06-03
This DVD is, of course, hilarious. Molly Shannon is one of the most talented performers to grace the SNL stage. I think they could have chosen some different skits, though. I can't understand why they chose something like the Blind Date skit over one of the Dog Show episodes or even the teen Goth show, I forget the title. Even though the DVD lacks, somewhat, it's a worthwhile purchase if you enjoy her work.

Goddess of the SeaGoddess of the Sea
Rated 3 Stars"Very Enjoyable!" 2007-04-24
This book was much better than I expected it to be. A fine blending of modern, medieval, & mystic elements. The plot moved along very well and I found the ending to be very sweet and unexpected. I have wondered, though, as to why the mermaid on the cover has a pinkish/orangish tail when the heroine's tail is described as a beautiful blueish color. Oh well...If you'd like to read more mermaid novels, I recommend The Last Mermaid by Shana Abe, The Mermaid's Song by Marianne Willman, Sleeping With The Fishes by Mary Janice Dickinson. You may also enjoy The Tower At Stony Wood by Patricia McKillip, which has mermaid-like people in it; and another book, The Changeling Sea by the same auther.

The Golden Retriever HandbookThe Golden Retriever Handbook
Rated 5 Stars"A Must Have For Golden Owners!" 2007-03-31
My husband and I are planning on getting our first dog (together) and it will definitely be a Golden Retriever. I grew up with these dogs and I'm a veterinary technician, so I'm pretty familiar with the breed and all the potential health problems. Since this is my first dog, on my own, I wanted to make sure I do things right and not overlook anything.
This book is an excellent reference for the first time owner or even a seasoned one.
There's detailed information on the history of the breed, descriptions and illustrations of American and British standards, what to look for when chosing a puppy or dog, how to feed & proper nutrition, proper grooming, diseases and conditions that are common for dogs in general to ones more specific to Goldens. This book even tells you how to perform a quick physical on your dog so that you can learn what's normal and what's not, enabling you to identify potential problems as soon as they arise.
One thing that surprised me was a section on blood tests and an explanation of some of the more common tests done on dogs. There's also a section on first aid, artificial respiration, and CPR. Another valuable section, is one on training. It goes beyond the basics and includes an introduction to field, agility, and conformation.
There is such a wealth of in-depth information to make this book an essential.
