| Focus - Focus 3 | ||
![]() | "Questions? What is the best Focus album, Answers! FOCUS III" | 2007-03-20 |
| I like the "warm" sound production of this record and it is very appealing and will always be my favorite Focus record, I don't miss "house of the King" because I never had the original record, I first heard this on CD in 1990 and have been hooked on Focus ever since. 1. Round Goes the Gossip - rare vocal from Thiis and good start to the ultimate Focus and progressive album 2. Love Remembered - Thiis flute and synthesizer are featured in the ballad 3. Sylvia - Swirling organs and Jan's chimey rhythm guitar an dcreamy lead are the highlight of favorite Focus track 4. Carnival Fugue - a fugue, very interesting and shows their classical chops 5. Focus III / Answers? Questions! Questions? Answers! - Jan is featured on the next 2 tracks, I always forget and thing it's 1 long track so I'll combine my comment here 7. Elspeth of Nottingham - no tmy favorite, noodlings on a lute, but pretty anyway 8. Anonymus Two - a little too long 26 minutes but some of the best ensemble playing by a progressive band ever. | ||
| Focus - Mother Focus | ||
![]() | "Light Jazz muzak was not what I expected, but still above average" | 2007-03-20 |
| I bought this about a year after I've been enjoying Focus III and like a fool, I expected more of Focus III. I go that in Father Back and Focus IV, but most of this album is light jazz and almost muzak? It's Focus so it's good muzak at least and classy as always. | ||
| Billy Joel - River of Dreams | ||
![]() | "Don't laugh Critics, but Billy's swan song may be his best?" | 2007-03-08 |
| Critics, you should enjoy this record, it's probably Billy's last. As of 2007, he still isn't interested in writing, he feels he's said it all. If you listen carefully Billy plays some mean Hammond organ on many of the tracks. He always wanted to scream on a Hammond Organ on his records and this is the one where he finally did it.
Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)Is a modern Masterpiece The River Of Dreams - Yes it's nauseating and very "a.m radio", but it has an "in the pocket" groove that is infectious Famous Last Words - The last song Billy will ever write? It's not a bad way to end.
| Band - Band | ||
![]() | "Music from the poolhouse" | 2007-02-28 |
| The Unfaithful Servant, King Harvest (Has Surely Come) are among the best songs ever written in the 60's. Amazingly this album was recorded in Sammy Davis Jr's poolhouse. Again, like Big Pink reissue, the bonus tracks are totally unnecessary. | ||
| Billy Joel - Nylon Curtain | ||
![]() | "Billy Joel's peak is right here" | 2007-02-28 |
| Billy's career and songwriting peak is here...Contains these 4 pocket symphonies by Billy Joel that are timeless. Laura - Possibly Billy's best song ever Goodnight Saigon - Still a live favorite A Room Of Our Own - Underrated Scandinavian Skies - Another forgotten classic | ||
| Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road | ||
![]() | "Elton's "white album" is still his best" | 2007-02-27 |
| Elton's "white album" is still his best album collecting many different styles...prog-rock, 50's rock, ballads, sea shantys, reggae and glam rock. The most underrated here is This Song Has No Title ,Grey Seal ,I've Seen That Movie Too ,Dirty Little Girl and Social Disease but it's all good and highly recommended, much more rewarding an dlong-lasting to a new Elton fan than a greatest hits. | ||
| Cream - Disraeli Gears | ||
![]() | "The non-hits are the best songs here" | 2007-02-27 |
| World Of Pain ,Dance The Night Away ,Blue Condition ,We're Going Wrong ,Outside Woman Blues and Take It Back are Creams best studio work and make this album a classic. | ||
| Cream - Live Cream | ||
![]() | "Fresh Cream Live!" | 2007-02-27 |
| N.S.U. ,Sleepy Time Time, Rollin and a Tumblin' and Sweet Wine are all from the debut Fresh Cream. This is what those 4 songs sound like on stage. The Cream's strength is live improvisation and this is their best live document hands down. Also included is the backing track of Strange Brew with different bluesy lyrics. | ||
| Badfinger - Straight Up | ||
![]() | "The Name of the Game" | 2007-02-27 |
| Worth the price of admission for the heartbreaking song by ...(when you consider what happened in 2 years for him)...Pete Ham, Name of the Game. Take it all, Baby blue are just 2 of the other highlights to this fine album. The only confusion are the bonus tracks, which are an earlier (rejected by apple) version of the album. Was apple out of their minds? | ||
| Badfinger - Ass [Bonus Track] | ||
![]() | "It's a winner! Badfingers best" | 2007-02-27 |
| Highlights of this great groups 4th album for Apple are...
Apple of My Eye - The late Pete Hams bitter farewell song to Apple Winner - Joey Mollands open letter to John Lennon who often critisized the band, Joeys best song Blind Owl, Constitution double shot from the underrated bass player singer writer late great Tom Evans Cowboy - even the drummer Mike Gibbons writes songs, amazing group Timeless - Pete Hams best song, unfortunately not many have ever heard it, should have been a hit.
| Badfinger - Magic Christian Music | ||
![]() | "Badfinger Boogie, Mal Evans discovery" | 2007-02-27 |
| Good debut from Mal Evan's (Beatles roadie's) discovery. Actually this is a compilation of the Iveys album and the then current soundtrack to the Peter Sellers film of the same name. Good stuff for any rock fan. | ||
| Gerry Mulligan - Chronicle Vol. 2: Twenty Great CCR Classics | ||
![]() | "Way better than Volume 1" | 2007-02-26 |
| Included here are many highlights from their career, even if they weren't all bit hits, who cares? I like these songs better because they are not overplayed on the radio! Walking on the Water - this and Suzie Q part. 2 are from the spacy first album Born on the Bayou - amazingly was missing from vol. 1! Good Golly Miss Molly- cool little richard cover These are 7 album tracks that we're better than the hits: Tombstone Shadow Wrote a Song for Everyone Night Time Is the Right Time It Came Out of the Sky Don't Look Now Before You Accuse Me My Baby Left Me These are the main 5 tracks from the great album Pendulum: Pagan Baby Wish I Could) Hideaway It's Just a Thought Molina Born to Move ...and from the underrated Mardi Gras: Lookin' for a Reason & Hello Mary Lou | ||
| The Firm - The Firm | ||
![]() | "Pageys comeback" | 2007-02-21 |
| The Firm were a great band and were a high water mark for Page and Rogers Careers. Also, Tony Franklin is a great add on the fretless bass. I like the material, especially Closer, Someone to Love, Satisfaction Guaranteed and Midnight Moonlight, great stuff. THis album has one major flaw though, the cover of the Righteous Bros classic, it's so bad and pointless that it ruins the albums otherwise smooth flow and brings it down a notch from the otherwise well deserved 5 stars. | ||
| Cream - Fresh Cream | ||
![]() | "The Les Paul/Marshall demonstration record Part 2" | 2007-02-20 |
| Highly recommended for the unbelievable "creamy" guitar tone on these 4 tracks Sleepy Time Time -Spoonful -Cat's Squirrel -I'm So Glad. This album and the "beano" Bluesbreakers album are the reason was people still use the Gibson Les Paul in rock 40 years after these recordings, period. | ||
| Aerosmith - Get Your Wings | ||
![]() | "Still not as good as that first album" | 2007-02-20 |
| Same Old Song And Dance, Lord Of The Thighs, Seasons Of Wither are here, I can't deny that those are 3 of their best. Yet, I still think the debut has more energy and is a better album, although the production and sound quality on Get Your Wings is a lot better,but they sound like they're trying too hard here and are IMO in a sophomore slump. they'll be back though. | ||
| Aerosmith - Live Bootleg | ||
![]() | "Warts and All!" | 2007-02-20 |
| The inclusion of Mother Popcorn from the bootleg 1973 at Pall's Mall in Boston is worth the price of admission. Tight, Funky, Greasy, Raunchy, Raw, Rock & Roll. I like this live album because it shows the band as it was, warts and all. | ||
| Fleetwood Mac - Bare Trees | ||
![]() | "Kirwin out of his Tree, but he is a mad genius" | 2007-02-19 |
| With these 5 gems, all I can say is "mad genius" comes to mind... Child Of Mine - Sunny Side Of Heaven -Bare Trees - Danny's Chant - Dust In particular Kirwin's (Dust) is very strange (a ditty about dying and turning to dust and decomposing) , but it is beautiful. The band will miss Kirwin, he was fired soon after for inapropriate behavior issues, due to his madness. God he is such a talented man (still alive) , the fame did him in, thank god we have his wonderful music that will never die. | ||
| Derek & Dominos - Layla | ||
![]() | "EC & Skydog in the Miami Heat" | 2007-02-19 |
| The best and sincere white blues there is, Erics masterpiece, this and Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac is the real deal. "Skydog" Duane Allman plays his heart out here also. One note about the guitar(s) sound on this album. This album was recorded using 5 watt Fender Champ tube amps from the 50's, that is why the GTRS sound big, small amps = big sound in the studio. | ||
| Fleetwood Mac - Then Play On | ||
![]() | "Green and Kirwin got them show biz blues and where's Jeremy?" | 2007-02-19 |
| I'm knocking down 1 star for a few weak tracks and horrible sound, Peter Green always said if they had a better producer, they would have been huge in the beginning era of the group. 1. Coming Your Way - Danny Kirwin is coming into his own on this record. 2. Closing My Eyes - Great dual guitar harmonys after the last verse and haunting track overall with kettle drum by Mick. 3. Show-Biz Blues - Not my Favorite,acoustic steel blues rave up 4. My Dream - Instrumental by Danny 5. Underway - Another instrumental this time it's Peter's 6. Oh Well - Peter Green's big moment, the classical part is too longgggg. 7. Although The Sun Is Shining - Kirwin's haunting voice is center stage here 8. Rattlesnake Shake - Another forgettable joke number about Mick 9. Searching For Madge - Jam 1 10. Fighting For Madge - Jam 2 11. When You Say - Kirwin is a loss for words 12. LIke Crying - Kirwins song about a girl who likes girls 13. Before The Beginning - Peter's swan song, scary song and one of his all time best | ||
| Fleetwood Mac - Tusk | ||
![]() | "Buckingham is a Genius" | 2007-02-19 |
| This album is a masterpiece, it's almost a Lindsay Buckingham solo album in all but name. The public never really "got it" apart from Stevies "Sara", "Think About Me" and "Tusk". I think it's way over peoples heads, I have a lot of respect for Buckingham because he experimented and moved forward here, instead of delivering what most of the people wanted, a "Rumours Part 2". He is the Brian Wilson of our generation. | ||
| Fleetwood Mac - Kiln House | ||
![]() | "Very good considering their leader just quit" | 2007-02-19 |
| The Mac, now led by Danny and Jeremy smoked lots of hash, lived in the Kiln House, went a little crazy and wound up with these three gems, which make it an essential record.
Station Man - Kirwins the best Earl Gray - Kirwins best instrumental Mission Bell - well done cover
| Fleetwood Mac - Future Games | ||
![]() | "Kirwin saves the day again" | 2007-02-19 |
| Danny Kirwins 3 gems...
Woman Of 1000 Years - Sands Of Time - Sometimes are real treats and save this otherwise mediocre album with newcomer Bob Welch who wrote the haunting title track, McVie's Show me a Smile is also a highlight.
| The Bee Gees - Best of Bee Gees | ||
![]() | "Proof that Bee Gees are much more than a disco dynamo" | 2007-02-18 |
| The early Bee Gee's are so good, it's a shame their career is judged by the disco days only. 2 songs sold me to early Bee Gee's Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You is just as good as the Moody Blues complete w/mellotron and gregorian chants way before enigma and actually before the moody blues. New York Mining Disaster- It's so good, it's like a lost Beatles song from Help or something. | ||
| Eric Clapton - 461 Ocean Boulevard | ||
![]() | "Barcardi 151 Ocean Boulevard" | 2007-02-18 |
| The comeback. Claptons passion for the blues is doing the talking here, but still slowhand makes the best album of his career. He had replaced his heroin addiction with an alcohol fixation, which made him very laid back, but it all works here very well. | ||
| The Eagles - On the Border | ||
![]() | "Hmm... You in Some Trouble, Boy!" | 2007-02-18 |
| My Man-tribute to Gram Parsons,On the Border,James Dean&Good Day In Hell are here and they are IMO the 4 best Eagle songs. By the way, none of them are on the greatest hits or box set, why? | ||
| Eric Clapton - Backless | ||
![]() | "The end of an era" | 2007-02-18 |
| The last good Clapton album and the last one with his 70's backup band. Highlights... WALK OUT IN THE RAIN (Bob Dylan song done very well as an opener) I'LL MAKE LOVE TO YOU ANY TIME (J J Cale song) PROMISES(the hit) TULSA TIME(Danny Flowers song and the best one here) | ||
| Rick Wakeman - 1973-79-Recollections: The Ver | ||
![]() | "The perfect RW sampler for fans and beginners" | 2007-02-18 |
| For the fans, included are these rare to CD RW recordings...
Statue Of Justice, Crime Of Passion, Chamber of Horrors- side 1 of the out of print "criminal record" The Palais is from the great underrated Rhapsodies For the uninitiated- Included are the best works from his first 3 solo albums. Good compilation, does not dissapoint
| Deep Purple - Made in Europe | ||
![]() | "Ritchie saved his best Deep Purple performances for last" | 2007-02-18 |
| The last gigs with Ritchie Blackmore before he left to form Rainbow. This is the most high energy playing in Ritchies career, possibly because he was not happy with the lineup at the time and had one foot out the door. He leaves us an incredible album to be forever remembered in time.
1. Burn - Paicey is even faster and better than the studio version 2. Mistreated (Interpolating Rock Me Baby)- Coverdales signature number 3. Lady Double Dealer - Get outta my way! 4. You Fool No One - Drum/Key solo good song and some difficult drum time signatures 5. Stormbringer - prelude to Rainbow, Ritchies next project.
| Asia (Rock) - Alpha | ||
![]() | "The smile had left their eyes, but it's a good 2nd effort" | 2007-02-17 |
| Not as focused as the first ASIA. Yet it contains their 2 best songs of their career, Midnight Sun and Open Your Eyes and for those 2 gems it should not be overlooked. The band was breaking up and you can here it in the stale arrangments, but It's still very good 80's pop rock. | ||
| Asia - Asia | ||
![]() | "4 prog legends wildest dreams come true and a Number 1 record" | 2007-02-17 |
| After the disasterous 1978-79 tours of Yes ELP and UK, these 4 ex-prog kings got together to make a pop rock quartet to make some cash to pay off their debts. Little did they know they would make a great classic album and even go to Number 1 in the charts! Not bad for 4 prog dinosaurs in the new wave/punk era. | ||
