![]() | "Excellent resource, but questions remain" | 2007-07-12 |
| I thought the angels had answered my prayers when I saw this book at my local pharmacy. It is packed absolutely chock full with great, easy to understand information about digestion, the mind-gut connection, and various digestive diseases. I know "natural medicine" seems crunchy granola and therefore easy to dismiss, but logic (and many well-designed studies) make many of the recommendations in this book hard to refute, and definitely worth trying. As someone who has been to dozens of traditional doctors and has still not found relief for my gut, being given more information and options for treating these distressing problems is a godsend and not to be sneezed at. However, after reading it cover-to-cover, I still have questions. My main issue: I have symptoms of several of the problems talked about in the book, and unfortunately the treatments for these problems are often contradictory. I really should eat more yogurt and other cultured products for the beneficial flora--unless I have candidiasis or a food allergy. I should eat whole grains for the fiber--unless I'm allergic or have candidiasis. I should drink water right before I go to bed--unless I have reflux. The list goes on and on. I have NO IDEA which of my stomach problems I should tackle first and which things I can try for one problem that won't significantly worsen another problem. I find I'm so confused that I really want to visit the clinic that Ms. Berkson talks about working at, but she gives no contact info in the book and I was unable to find anything online. Barring that, I would have really appreciated some information for how to FIND a clinic like that one, or a doctor who will work with me to find holistic and natural remedies. Having said that, I still think this book is an excellent resource that is well-written, well-organized, and well worth reading. | ||
| Scrubs - Season One | ||
![]() | "Why isn't this show a gigantic hit?" | 2005-05-20 |
| I think the reason that this show is "cultish" is also one of the reasons it's so great. Three words: No laugh track. Along with "Arrested Development," which is similarly lacking in canned laughter, "Scrubs" let's it's jokes find you instead of having the "audience" react with guffaws to signal "That was funny! Laugh now!" Other reasons why the show is fabulous: The writing is spectacular. Black humor and sentimentality exist together (just like life), and it works. The fantasy sequences are generally great and often spectacular. The actors are not afraid to make fools of themselves in the name of comedy. And Zach Braff is so incredibly goofy and disarming as lead character JD that you can't help but like him. One of the best episodes of season 1 has John Ritter (*sniff*) playing JDs dad. The episode is crude, silly, tragic, and warm all at the same time. It's an amazing half hour. I haven't watched the DVDs yet, so I can't speak to the extras, but if you're new to the show (lucky you!!!) I would say the episodes along are worth the price. Enjoy! | ||

![]() | "Is this book a hoax?" | 2005-04-12 |
| Several reviewers have suggested that Dave Pelzer has been exposed as a hoax in the New York Review of Books. I can find no such article in existence. If Mr. Pelzer's story is NOT true, I'd like to know. And if it IS true, I think it's horrifying that people are claiming that he is lying in these reviews, considering how much he's allegedly already been through. I have not read the book yet, as I want to get to the bottom of this before I do. | ||
| Mike Doughty - Skittish/Rockity Roll | ||
![]() | "One of the best singer/songwriters in the business" | 2005-01-22 |
| I'm really confused as to why Mike Doughty isn't a superstar yet. His lyrics are inspired, his vocal stylings one of a kind, and his music is catchy and beautiful and weird all at once. I have always loved Soul Coughing, though anyone looking for more of the same may be disappointed. There is such a thing as creative growth, people. There's still that distinctive voice, but where Soul Coughing leaned toward the jazzy, funky and hard end of indie rock, Mike's solo stuff is more stripped down and down-to-earth. But just listen to some of the lyrics and you'll realize that the Soul Coughing vibe is unmistakably present--arresting turns of phrase, clever wordplay, and funny and often brilliant observations on life, love, and laundry. The first song I ever heard of his was "27 Jennifers," which to me encapulates the Gen X experience so perfectly it seemed classic the first time I listened to it. Some of Mike's stuff reminds me of Billy Nayer in it's poetic weirdness, but where Cory MacAbee can be weird beyond accessibility, Mike always manages to hit home. I truly cannot get enough of this man's stuff. It's not for everyone, but what truly quality music ever is? | ||

![]() | "A guilty pleasure from the 80s" | 2004-11-02 |
| I've seen this movie probably about 50 or 60 times. It came out when I was a senior in high school and working at a movie theater that showed one movie at a time. DSS played for about 4 months. Hence, the numerous viewings. The movie has never stopped being funny, sweet, and relentlessly entertaining. I still find this movie a guilty pleasure, and I pop it in whenever I'm feeling down and need a pick-me-up. The cast is great: Aidan Quinn and Rosanna Arquette have great chemistry. Madonna is funny and sexy and at this point still has a real woman's body. Laurie Metcalf (as Becky) is simply superb. This woman is a genius and I'll never understand why she isn't a superstar. She has almost all the best lines in the film, and believe me there are many. Steven Wright makes a hilarious cameo. And look for John Turturro. The plot is as silly as they get, but the writing is sharp with tons of quotable lines. The movie is a time capsule of wonderful vintage 80s junk-chic, complete with soundtrack. Watch it and reminisce. | ||
| The Corrections: A Novel | ||
![]() | "Don't Waste Your Time" | 2002-12-20 |
| This book was very difficult to slog through. The characters were unpleasant and the writing mannered, distracting, and at times unreadable. And it goes on for 600 pages. Where was the editor? Pages and pages of a man's hallucination of talking poop--has Franzen even seen South Park? I know this book was supposed to be a satire, but I found very little of it funny or insightful. It was mostly just painful to read. It won the National Book Award, I know, but why? Most of the people I've talked to about the book disliked it as much as I did. I can think of numerous other books that are much better written and much more of a pleasure to read than this one.... | ||
