| Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon | ||
![]() | "This is the one." | 2007-10-28 |
| Twenty years ago I earned a bachelor's in Greek. This was the only lexicon I needed (aside from using Autenreith's for a couple Homer classes). I still use this to this day. For a time I even had a copy of the "Great Scott" but it sat there unused...so I sold it and don't miss it. This one, the "Middle Liddell" all, and probably more than, you'll ever need. | ||
| Larry Carlton - Larry Carlton | ||
![]() | "This one's on FIRE" | 2007-10-28 |
| This has long been one of my all time favorite jazz albums. I say this despite two wimpy songs with vocals and sophomoric lyrics. The rest of the album really burns. Larry has such wonderful melodic and harmonic command of both music in general and guitar in particular that after twenty years of listening to this and playing (I'm a guitarist too) some of the songs I'm still amazed. Everyone loves "Room 335", obviously a Carlton signature tune. "It Was Only Yesterday" is an exercise in emotive playing and at the same time a lesson to all in how to play expressively with restraint; and the song is all the better for what Carlton doesn't play. Two songs that really energize this record are the absolutely blazing tunes "Don't Give It Up" and "Point It Up". You'd better be sitting down when you hear these. Now for the inane Steely Dan comparisons...this record is nothing like those guys! Steely Dan was all about slick and often sleazy style ("Hey Nineteen" and "Cousin Dupree" come to mind). Carlton's record is about guitar playing. The intro to "Room 335" surely sounds like "Peg" but hey, how do you know that chord progression wasn't Carlton's to begin with? Get over it and get this CD. | ||
| King Crimson - Neal and Jack and Me (Live 1982-84) | ||
![]() | "Awesome" | 2007-09-27 |
| This is far better than I expected. I own two other KC DVDs, but this is better than both. Not only are these guys stellar musicians, but the combination of talent and imagination is amazing. This is definitely worth more than five stars. (The package says this is an hour performance; it's really over 80 minutes.) King Crimson at its best! You'll see KC playing nearly every song from "Discipline," "Beat," and "Three of a Perfect Pair." The band is very tight and what's more they obviously love what they're doing. A MUST SEE show if there ever was one.

| Hyperspace : A Scientific Odyssey Through Parallel Universes, Time Warps, and the 10th Dimension | ||
![]() | "Really loved this one" | 2007-09-23 |
| I'm not a scientist (I'm a classicist) and didn't even enjoy science in school at all. In fact until writers like Michael Behe, Heinz Pagels and Michio Kaku came along science was totally unapproachable for me. For a writer to take such incredibly complex information and present it, not only clearly and understandibly, but also enjoyably, one has to be uniquely gifted. Kaku and Behe can do this and remain my favorites. It's been years since I read this and to this day I can't forget it. So, here's my point. If you, like me, long to understand fascinating ideas that have always seemed incomprehensible, let Michio Kaku help you out. Get this one. | ||
| Ted Nugent - If You Can't Lick Em...Lick Em | ||
![]() | "This one ROCKS" | 2007-08-31 |
| This was my first Nugent album and I've bought many more since. Every song is strong and rocks hard. Ted seems to be a master of innuendo in the AC/DC vein..."the harder they come, the harder I get," etc. Even when St. Holmes was with the band, people bought Nugent records because the guitar totally rocked and rocked hard. This one is no exception. There are no 8 minute jams, but you'll get a great sounding thoroughly aggressive album with this. Ted stays true to his roots and (I think) shows some maturity in the song writing department. | ||
| Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - The Sky Is Crying | ||
![]() | "A real winner!" | 2007-07-13 |
| This is easily on par with SRV's first three albums. It's, as you may know, a posthumous release of recordings made throughout his career. Many people rave about the "Little Wing" cover--and it is great--but I'm knocked out by the Kenny Burrell cover of "Chitlins con Carne." Every song is a keeper, not a throw-away in the bunch, just a slightly wider variety of SRV's playing than you'd get elsewhere. | ||
| Scorpions - Tokyo Tapes [Bonus Tracks) | ||

| While I'm not the biggest Scorps fan, I really like this a lot. You can hear that the band is having a blast. The sound is very good and balanced, and the performance is intense. Sad for me to say that I never checked out their early (pre-Mattias Jabs)material--and it's my loss--when it was first released. Now that I have, I can honestly say I like the early stuff better. This one's hard to get tired of and is becoming one of my favorite live albums. Get it, at least, to hear Uli Jon Roth tear it up. | ||
| The Bookman's Promise : A Cliff Janeway Novel (Cliff Janeway Novels (Hardcover)) | ||
![]() | "Maybe 3 1/2 stars" | 2007-07-13 |
| This kept my interest. You've got Janeway doing his thing as you'd expect. Though "Bookman's Wake" is my favorite Janeway story, this one has its moments. I especially liked the descriptions of Charleston, SC as I used to live there. The use of Richard Burton (the explorer) was what most kept me involved here. I even picked up something from Dunning's suggested reading list at the end. | ||

| Mahogany Rush - Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live | ||
![]() | "I'd give it 10 stars if I could." | 2007-07-13 |
| For years this was the only Frank Marino album I had. I just figured that it doesn't get any better than this. Well recently FM proved me wrong. "RealLIVE" is more than twice the length of this and every bit as worthy, if not better. Having said that, "Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live" will never grow old. Here is an excellent mix of originals and blues covers. Far from growing tedious with repeated listens, this still stands as a high water mark for any band and exactly what you'd expect from an accomplished player and song writer like Marino. | ||
| Novum Testamentum Graece Et Latine - Greek/Latin New Testament | ||
![]() | "Latin AND Greek. Wow!" | 2007-06-22 |
| I love it. When I'm a little stuck for a Greek word, the facing page in Latin is definitely a welcome resource. I'm relearning Greek after a long time and this is just what the doctor ordered. Personally, I'd prefer less of the critical apparatus and more text on each page so as to leave room for vocabulary in the back. You'll need a separate lexicon if you don't already have one...but if you're searching for the "Novum Testamentum" you probably do have one. I highly recommend this! | ||
| Alice Cooper - Raise Your Fist and Yell | ||
![]() | "Ahh,,,Alice, you gotta love him" | 2007-06-22 |
| As lyrically childish as we'd expect of Alice Cooper and as brazenly in your face as we'd hope him to be. Great band!!! Get this just to hear Kane Roberts tear it up on guitar. Wow! | ||
| New Testament Greek for Beginners | ||
![]() | "This is the one. Get it." | 2007-06-22 |
| I started Greek with this book and went on to major in Greek. Machen's systematic presentation of grammar is as clear and approachable as you'd want it to be. I've been away from Greek for decades and after spending my career teaching Latin, I've returned to this little book and found it invigorating as I relearn what I once knew so well. I own other Greek grammars, but Machen's is really all I need. If you buy this--and I highly recommend it--get Thompson's workbook too. As a combination they can't be beat. Thompson, by the way, provides excellent additional review and practice material that makes a difficult language more accessible. | ||
