![]() | "On Assuming Another Identity" | 2007-08-12 |
| Apartment Zero I went to go and see this movie by myself when I had first moved to Los Angeles, California and didn't have any friends. It is a film about how we become those that we love and assume in great part their identities. It is an excellent and very visual movie, taking place in Buenos Aires. It certainly left me moved in the least and understanding just how true the theme really is having gone through something similar myself. | ||
| Yaz - Upstairs at Eric's | ||
![]() | "New Wave Classic" | 2007-08-12 |
| I used to go to teen night clubs in Kansas City back in the 1980's where you would find new wave teenagers, a couple of punk rockers and maybe a preppie or two. Upon walking in there would be clouds of smoke, intellectual looks of those involved in the Thespians or Drama Club with the latest European fashion and much unlike today, everyone smoked at Under the Starz and Pogo's. Pumping out of the speakers one would typically hear "Don't Go" off the Upstairs at Eric's album by Yaz - one of the New Wave genre's finest. Yaz leaded by Alison Moyet's hearty voice with a soul-type sound coupled with her modern English accent and techno beat made for a truly impacting sound for the ultra-modern youth of the 1980's at Under the Starz and Pogo's. Upstairs at Eric's shaped a generation of the avante-garde youth from the 1980's, whether in Kansas City or elsewhere, thjs album is also packed with several other New Wave goodies aside from "Don't Go." "Situation," "Goodbye Seventies," "Bring Your Love Down (Didn't I)" and "Winter Kills" are a few of my favorites. Most of the music is very dance rhythmic with the exception of "Winter Kills" which carries a much slower sound and very deep dramatic melody. Even today you can here "Situation" or "Don't Go" at a disco. It is truly a dance music fanatic's and New Wave fan collector item. | ||
| A Wrinkle in Time | ||
![]() | "On Understanding Differences" | 2007-08-10 |
| A Wrinkle in Time This is a science fiction/fantasy youth book that helps people in this age group that may not necessarily fit in with American mainstream to understand and feel comfortable with their identities. It gives a true reason to believe in one's individualism as well as on understanding differences. The story is fantastic and includes principles of mathematics and science although is a science fiction and fantasy book, but portrays adventure in a "Harry Potter" type of way even though it very much pre-dates the series. An excellent book that could animate the "loner" type of introverted youth. | ||

| Selena - Selena - Greatest Hits | ||
![]() | "Selena: Tex-Mex Queen. May She Rest In Peace" | 2007-08-08 |
| Selena, the queen of Latin Music Tex-Mex upon her death, became an instant legend. She marked the beginning of the new trend "Tex-Mex," as well as marked a time in the history of America when native Spanish speakers began openly speaking Spanish in employment and in the marketplace. Long gone were the days of trying to assimilate into American culture for fear of rejection, hispanic Americans were proud of their new branded identity as latinos and were ready to take America on, and it seems like almost overnight advertising began shifting toward the hispanic marketplace with many original American brands now trying to find their identity in said market. Even the jingle to Oscar Mayer weenies was being sung in Spanish! A tragedy that Selena wasn't able to enjoy much of her newfound Latin Music fame especially after all of her hard work and effort into becoming a star, but she certainly left us with great music in English and in Spanish. Selena - Greatest Hits contains 16 tracks. The only two I have really listened to and like tremendously are tracks 2 and 6, I Could Fall In Love and Dreaming of You, respectively. This is definitely a collector's item. | ||
| Enrique Iglesias - Vivir | ||
![]() | "Enrique Iglesias - Not Julio - Enrique!" | 2007-08-08 |
| Vivir Just because Enrique Iglesias' father is probably now a legend in both Spanish and American music, Enrique Iglesias has undoubtedly developed a tremendous following on his own. I neither compare him to his father, nor would I ever, and the only reason I even mention Julio is that so many others are always writing about the two in a side by side comparison as if they came as part of a package deal! (Amazon - that might be a good marketing technique!) Regardless, this CD is truly a good work of Enrique, as is evidenced by the three chart toppers off of this album - Miente, Solo En Ti, and Enamorado Por Primera Vez. Enrique is definitely a Latin Music Pop Star, and well-deserved. The only mistake Enrique made was upon an interview, when asked what the one thing he would change in his life, he said he would change his male member! Now, of course, he is teased to no-end about his declaration to the world that he is unpleased with his birthright! | ||

| Luis Miguel - Busca Una Mujer | ||
![]() | "OLDIE BUT GOODIE" | 2007-08-06 |
| One of Luismi's older CD's but definite goodies. Busca Una Mujer has great romantic songs like "Fria Como El Viento" and "Culpable O No (Mienteme Como Siempre)" wherein Luismi sings those songs of a time in life when passing through love's troubled waters. Great music to listen to when misery loves company and a possible tearjerker depending upon the situation. | ||
| Laura Pausini - Lo Mejor de: Volvere Junto a Ti Laura Pausini | ||
![]() | "Volvere Junto a Laura" | 2007-08-06 |
| Laura Pausini is one of the best Latin Music singers of this day. An Italian, Laura has broken Latin Music's Pop en Espanol charts time after time and continues to deliver comtemporary pop to her fans. Her strong sweet voice commands attention and yet her intonation is truly music to the ears. Whether you understand spanish or not, you will understand Laura Pausini's music through her melody and emotion. Out of 17 tracks on this CD in English, Spanish and Italian, I have 4 favorites, of which all 4 made the charts. Those are tracks 1, 3, 4 and 14 which are Volvere Junto a Ti, Se Fue, Amores Extranos and Entre Tu y Mil Mares, respectively. I recommend this CD along with all others by Laura Pausini to everyone and to everyone that appreciates foreign languages and great music. | ||
| Paulina Rubio - Border Girl | ||
![]() | "A Border Girl Who Truly Transcends Borders" | 2007-08-01 |
| Paulina Rubio is Latin Music's answer to a request for a fresh innovative new style to Latin Rock 'n Roll. Hip and sassy, Paulina Rubio puts at rest an era of association of Latin Music with the more "oompa" style of its predecessors and marches right to the top of the charts with a very contemporary and spunky rock 'n roll enjoyed on an international level. Sure to be enjoyed by Spanish speakers as well as those that don't, Paulina Rubio's Border Girl is a must-have for any party to be successful and shared with anyone who has yet to appreciate the contemporary new Latin Music style and Rock in Spanish genre.
