I've had my 4GB thumb drive for about a year. No problems at all. Just now, I pulled a load of clothes out of the washer and found my thumb drive at the bottom of the basket. I took it to the computer, plugged it in, and waited. There it was on my desktop with ALL data intact.

Can't beat that. Wash and wear!

Rated 5 Stars"The beginning of a journey" 2009-08-04
This book started me down a path -- a path I am still on -- studying Buddhist principles. It is written in a gentle voice. Kabat-Zinn shows through his language, his voice, his clarity, and his ideas that he genuinely cares about the people's well being.

This book is a place to start, but I wouldn't classify it merely as a beginner's beginning. It is useful and helpful for anyone in the early part of their journey into Eastern ideas.

The book is in three main parts with several short chapters in each part. It works well to read a chapter and then ponder it. At the end of a few chapters, Kabat-Zinn suggests exercises, though that is a poor name for them. He labels them "Try." Much better. And indicative of the care with which the book is written.

There are podcasts and videos of Kabat-Zinn speaking around the 'net. Check them out. He comes across with the same gentleness, and absolute brilliance, as he does in this book.

I've been using this mouse for over three months now. It is the most comfortable mouse I have ever owned and also the most technically useful. To give you an idea of the size of my hands, I can play an octave on the piano easily, but a ninth is a stretch. If your hands are bigger or smaller than that, then this mouse may not fit you, but if you're a one-octave type of person, this is probably going to work very well. I am aware of ergonomics when working at the computer: this is a well-designed mouse which is comfortable for me to use over long stretches of time.br /br /There are a lot of extra gadgets on the mouse, some of which I use and some of which I don't. No biggie. You get lots of choices and the nice thing is that buttons you don't use much don't get in the way of those you do. Technically, this mouse should work for most people.br /br /Battery life? Pretty good. I changed the battery at about 3 months.

Lowepro Voyager S Camera Strap - BlackLowepro Voyager S Camera Strap - Black
Rated 3 Stars"May work for some, but not for me" 2006-12-11
I'd like to carry my camera slung across my chest, just as I do my purse. It is safe and it's comfortable because it distributes the weight well.

Unfortunately, I haven't found a camera strap long enough to do this. The typical strap length leaves the camera in my armpit.

Enter Lowepro's new Voyager straps. I love Lowepro equipment and have three of their bags, including my favorite "sling bag" which is carried across the chest. I was thrilled to read their promo literature: "The Voyager S is for photographers who prefer to sling the camera across their chest while the Voyager C, with its contoured design, offers additional comfort when carrying over the shoulder or the around the neck"

The "S" sounds perfect. But, alas, the strap is no longer than average. The camera, when slung across my chest, still sits in my armpit. I am only 5'5", so those tall folks (anyone above average height) looking for such a solution would be wise to steer to another option.

Someday, someone will make a camera strap long enough for slinging across the chest. Maybe a purse manufacturer could work with a camera equipment company?

Otherwise, this is a comfortable strap, well-made, and good for everyday use (hence three stars: that aspect of the workmanship is typical great Lowepro).

I just got back from vacation. I have a bad back, and it was sore. I was very happy to discover that the way this bag hangs, I could carry my Nikon D-70 and one or two extra lens very comfortably.

Gear is super easy to access and the bag provides a nice platform for changing lenses.

I have other bags which heft lots of gear, and they're great for travel days and the occasional big shoot, but if you're looking to hike (and have a separate way to carry a tripod), then this is a wonderful bag.

Rated 5 Stars"My Favorite Cookbook" 2005-06-03
I have made several recipes from this cookbook and have had loved them all. The salsas are now staples on my table as are the skirt steak, the flans (yum!) and the tortilla soup.

Many of the recipes appear on the menu at their restaurant, Border Grill. When prepared to specs, they taste just like the real thing. This makes me happy because Border Grill is one of my favorite restaurants.

Great Mexican cooking takes time, but as this cookbook shows us, it is not complicated. The book is beautiful, the recipes clear, and the results fabulous.

Deborah and I were neighbors when this book was released. I remember looking at the gallery proofs and falling in love with it then. The book is so well produced that it is like looking at her originals.

I return to this book often. The photos are extraordinary, and the commentary utterly charming. Deborah knows and understands dogs.

Happily, I had her photograph my golden. Her portrait, stunningly gorgeous, hangs on my wall.

The Craft of Tonal CounterpointThe Craft of Tonal Counterpoint
Rated 5 Stars"Great text for 18th Century Counterpoint" 2005-02-27
The Benjamin has a composers' viewpoint more than other counterpoint texts I've used. He speaks (well) to aspects such as rhythm and shape of line in each chapter, never sacrificing the other musical parameters to the all-too-common primacy of pitch. There is a useful balance of prose to musical examples.

Benjamin includes linear analyses of several examples. This provides a solid introduction to Schenkarian concepts for lower-division students, and yet they can easily be skipped by those who prefer.

This text has a satisfactory anthology of JS Bach pieces at the back. This is important at schools where textbook budgets for most students are slim.

I have yet to use the last few chapters in my one-semester course, but in a year-long sequence, they would be welcome.

I have relatively small hands (I can play an octave on the piano, but it's a stretch to hit a ninth). My hands are an inbetween size that balks at full-sized mouses but cramps at grabbing travel mouses. On a whim, I tried this mouse, advertised as "2/3rds" the size of a regular mouse.

It is great fit for me. It is comfortable, plus it tracks very well, and feels as smooth as any mouse I've ever owned.

Highly recommended.

Apple Pro Training Series: Logic 6Apple Pro Training Series: Logic 6
Rated 2 Stars"If you love learning every possible button, except..." 2004-07-08
While I garnered a basic introduction to Logic from this book, I was perplexed by a contradiction in conceptual purpose: exhaustive and yet incomplete. The depth of detail was staggering. Several pages are devoted, for example, to the various views possible in Logic, and it takes 120 pages to get to making any sound. I would have preferred an approach which chose an overview through the whole program, and then allowed for greater depth in later chapters. I would have retained the information better if I had been able to use it in a project.

Strangely, the authors chose to skip all aspects of Logic in which one interacts via music notation. In a book so exhaustive on, say, user-interface options, it was surprising and disappointing to encounter, "The Score editor depends upon an understanding of traditional music notation... [this book] does not cover the Score editor."

I wonder if they felt that including information on the Score editor would have kept people from buying the book. The other editors (Hyper, Matrix, Event List) have about 10 pages each. Would another 10 pages in a 538-page tome have broken the bank? Dare I say, they could easily have trimmed ten elsewhere (3 pages on "how to name a track" to start).

I laugh that its subtitle is "Professional Music Creation and Audio Production," and consider that it might have more correctly concluded "Without Covering Aspects a Professional Might Use."

A Theory of Parody: The Teachings of Twentieth-Century Art FormsA Theory of Parody: The Teachings of Twentieth-Century Art Forms
Rated 5 Stars"Thoughtful and useful look at parody" 2004-06-13
Hutcheon's definition of parody is much broader than most, and I believe it is both fitting and useful. Parodic works, to Hutcheon, are not those which imitate at the expense of the parodied text (that's satire). Rather, they confront the past, and explore the difference between the parodied text and the present. As she writes, the pleasure comes from the degree of engagement of the viewer/listener in "intertextual bouncing" between the familiar and the new.

The book's premise is that parody is a genre fundamental to 20th century art forms. The works cited come from a wide range of disciplines, and are both modern and postmodern. The language is rather straight-forward and clear, a welcome diverson from many contemporary theorists. In fact, I found the book perhaps too repetitive, too focused on making a single point. Still, Hutcheon provides a thoughtful viewpoint from which to enjoy - and to make - art.

Rated 5 Stars"Wonderful Primer for Pomo" 2004-05-05
I have been looking for a text to introduce students who likely have had no advanced critical theory to the gnarly world of postmodernism. This is the one.

It is clear and concise. It is very well organized. And nothing about it cheats the subject by skimming over difficult concepts.

Interface Culture : How New Technology Transforms the Way We Create and CommunicateInterface Culture : How New Technology Transforms the Way We Create and Communicate
Rated 2 Stars"Good first chapter, little ensuing worth" 2004-03-08
The premise of the book set out in the first chapter was fascinating. Interfaces shape our perceptions, just as Marshall McLuhan proclaimed in "The Medium is the Message."

Unfortunately, this critical eye didn't find its way into the remainder of the book. I consider "Interface Culture" to be a history of computer interfaces rather than an interpreter of the way our perceptions have changed.
