| The Terminator | ||
![]() | "Awesome film, lousy blu-ray" | 2009-11-13 |
| I should have known that when a blu-ray disc was selling for under $10 that something was wrong. Sure enough, the picture quality is pretty much the same as a regular DVD. The fact that it's selling for such a low price probably means that somebody is wising up and will soon issue a better quality blu-ray version. My advice is to pass up on this offer and instead wait for the definitive treatment. | ||

![]() | "Somewhat stiff and stilted" | 2009-11-07 |
| The concept behind this movie is intriguing - a sexual harassment suit in which the guy is the victim. Michael Douglas is great. However, Demi Moore can't act at all. Much of the script sounds like a bad political speech rather than actual dialogue. The music would work for an international spy thriller, but sounds out of place here. I'd like to see this concept, with Michael Douglas, but redone a bit better. | ||
| Everybody Loves Raymond - The Complete Seventh Season | ||
![]() | "This show reminds me of my family!" | 2009-11-04 |
| This is without a doubt one of the funniest shows on TV. Each character is so distinct and will probably remind you of somebody in your own family. Unlike most sitcoms, which seem to take really unrealistic characters and throw them into unrealistic situations, Raymond works taking a normal situation and exaggerating it to show the humor. I pull these DVDs out whenever I need a laugh. They're well worth the cost. | ||

| Wii Nunchuck Controller | ||
![]() | "Fun, but not used much" | 2009-10-28 |
| The nunchuk is light and easy to use, but unfortunately isn't used in many games. The nunchuk really becomes in first-person shooting games, such as Official Wii Zapper with Link's Crossbow Training. I hope Nintendo makes more use of it. In the meantime, I wouldn't get too many extra nunchuks unless you play a lot of first-person shooters with guests. | ||

![]() | "I lost 20 pounds!" | 2009-10-28 |
| I was skeptical that a video game could ever lead to exercise, but my wife wanted this game so I got it. Sure enough, I lost 20 pounds using it. It's definitely a fun and entertaining way for people like me who get bored in a gym. I particularly like how it has a series of games that you can beat, which makes it seem as if your exercise regimen has a larger goal - to get the highest score.
Most of the exercises are aerobic, with some limited strength training. However, it doesn't have enough strength training for people interested in body building or muscle development. Rather, it is primarily a way to promote fitness and fun at the same time.
| Mario Kart Wii with Wii Wheel | ||
![]() | "The Wii Wheel takes some adjustment" | 2009-10-28 |
| I haven't been crazy about the Wii Wheel so far. My friends and I played Mario Kart on the other systems incessantly, but we just can't seem to get hooked on this game with the Wii wheel. The turning is very often wide. I wouldn't say it's difficult to control, but it isn't easy. Of course, you can use the control pad as well. Unless you're a real racing fan, you should probably rent this first and see how you like it. | ||
| Wii Remote Controller | ||
![]() | "a versatile controller" | 2009-10-26 |
| The Wii controller is great. It can be used both as a traditional controller and as a remote "wand." It fits comfortably in your hand. Nintendo did a great job with the Wii. | ||

![]() | "Awesome wildlife photos" | 2009-10-26 |
| This is easily one of the best collections of wildlife photos I've ever seen. Absolutely wonderful. Steve Bloom not only takes photos of interesting animals, but finds really dramatic and innovative angles. Close-ups, aerial shots, action shots. The photos range from Africa to Antarctica, Asia to America. Just about every single shot took my breath away. This is definitely THE wildlife photography book to get.
I also recommend Bloom's Elephant.
| Super Smash Bros. Brawl | ||
![]() | "Awesome - better than tha last version" | 2009-10-26 |
| Hours and hours of fun. The combat moves are fun, stages visually entertaining, and graphics pretty good. It's like the Gamecube version, but with better graphics and more characters and stages.The one-player is pretty engrossing as well.
Note: This game doesn't make too much use of the Wii remote, but then again that's probably for the best.
| The Good Girl | ||
![]() | "Rednecks and a pathetic life" | 2009-10-08 |
| I wasn't crazy about this movie. It's more like an exploration of desperate people in a pathetic part of rural America. It's about how all the people in this situation can't escape from their situation. The plot involves Jennifer Aniston's attempt to find love through a crazy affair and find a new life. Sometimes though it gets a bit too depressing.
The acting isn't great. Jennifer Aniston tries to come across as a redneck with a southern accent, but just sounds odd. Jake Gyllenhaal is a bit too odd and psychotic. Oddly enough, I thought John C. Reilly, otherwise known for playing moronic clowns (like Step Brothers), actually fits his role really well.

![]() | "Lovers, Poets, and Academics" | 2009-10-03 |
| A cute movie, something along the lines of a Shakespeare in Love meets The Da Vinci Code. The movie follows two academics as they hunt down tantalizing clues about a 19th century poet's extramarital love affair. While it is clear from the beginning that they the poet did have an affair, the movie throws in a few twists and turns. United in their quest, Aaron Eckhart and Paltrow's characters inevitably fall in love.
The movie has a nice rhythm to it. It never really throws up any major surprises, but the storyline is original enough that it remains entertaining. Both Paltrow and Eckhart act pretty well in this film, so it's pretty easy to sympathize them along as they become obsessed with the dead poet's love letters. Overall, a great date film.
| The Graduate | ||
![]() | "A classic film about youth angst and manhood" | 2009-10-03 |
| There's been so much written about this classic movie that I won't bother to write too much more. The movie looks surprisingly fresh for being over 40 years old (especially the blu-ray version). It doesn't look old.
With that said, the movie isn't as funny as I had expected or hoped. Some of it might be Dustin Hoffman's acting - I like him in other movies, but he comes off pretty annoying here. Part of it might be that the movie pushed cultural boundaries and spoke to issues in the 1960s that don't have as much resonance today. Some scenes were just too over the top - like Hoffman's parents forcing him to go scuba-diving in the pool. I just don't get the humor there. The movie made great use of Simon and Garfunkel songs for the soundtrack! It really becomes part of the film and tells the story. Frankly, it's probably the best part of the movie. It would be nice if more movies weaved pop music in their films. Bottom line: if you liked The Catcher in the Rye (or stories like it), you'll like The Graduate. If you're like me and hated that book, you won't find the movie that exciting either.

| Wedding Crashers (UMD Mini For PSP) | ||
![]() | "Funny, but I was expecting more" | 2009-09-27 |
| Wedding Crashers is another in the line of adolescent comedy that seems so popular nowadays. There are some funny scenes, and Will Farrell has a great cameo. However, with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, I was expecting to be laughing out loud a lot more, and I wasn't. By the end of the film, it seems more like a shallow love story than a comedy film. Good for some laughs, but these actors have done better films. | ||

![]() | "Adolescent and puerile" | 2009-09-27 |
| I wasn't expecting high-class comedy from Will Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Luke Owen, but even so I thought this movie was puerile to the extreme. The movie is filled with stupid characters, sex-related jokes, and drunken orgies. It's a remake of Animal House, but isn't a classic like Animal House. I thought there were a few funny moments with Will Farrell, but the rest of the movie was pretty pathetic. I'd rather watch a good Will Farrell comedy, such as Kicking and Screaming. This might be worth watching once for a few laughs, but I wouldn't watch it over again. | ||

| Gods and Generals | ||
![]() | "Not quite Gettysburg, but good in its own right" | 2009-09-27 |
| This movie is the prequel to the popular civil war classic Gettysburg. Gods & Generals covers the two years before Gettysburg, particularly the battle of Fredericksburg. It stars most of the same characters as Gettysburg and was produced with the same care to historical attention. Robert Duvall and Jeff Daniels are both excellent as General Robert E. Lee and Colonel Chamberlain. The settings beautifully portray the historical era and battlefield sites.
However, Gods & Generals wasn't quite as satisfying as Gettysburg. It focuses much more on the Southern forces than the North. It presents a distorted view of the South, almost to the point of taking the Confederacy's side. It presents African American slaves as sympathetic to the Confederate cause. Much of the film stars General Stonewall Jackson, an annoying Southern fanatic who spews out religious fanaticism. In one long scene, he claims that the South was considering liberating the slaves, but this scene overshadows the fact that the Confederacy never came even close to this (and that after the war, Southerners spent decades harassing African Americans). Meanwhile, General Lee, a more sympathetic character, is more marginal than in Gettysburg. I don't mind a movie that shows the Southern point of view and doesn't demonize them - Gettysburg did a good job of presenting Southern soldiers as human beings. However, Gods & Generals goes a bit too far.

| Gettysburg (Widescreen Edition) | ||
![]() | "One of the greatest movies ever" | 2009-09-27 |
| I don't often give movies a 5-star rating. Gettysburg is one of those rare exceptions. This is a movie about the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most pivotal moments in U.S. history. The movie rises to the occasion. The acting is great, with Martin Sheen as General Robert E. Lee and Jeff Daniels as Colonel Chamberlain. The film has a beautiful cinematography and an incredible soundtrack by Randy Edelman. This is a masterpiece and will remain a classic for decades to come. I wish it had encouraged more historical fiction movies, but in the years since 1993 I haven't seen many movies of this caliber. | ||
