27 inch Hi Intensity Silver tape27 inch Hi Intensity Silver tape
Rated 5 Stars"Bright silver relective tape, gray when unlit." 2009-10-05
I used this stuff to put on my motorcycle helmet, and on the stalks of my turn signals on my motorcycle. I put it on in the garage, and opened up the door. It made the motorcycle stand out, as it never had before, just from reflected sunlight. Every time my wife pulled her car into the garage it lit up, until it ticked her off. It is simply great stuff. I used it on another two helmets, and I can say that no-one ever ran over my head while wearing a helmet with tape applied, or my motorcycle while this tape was on it.

It stretches slightly, while working on a motorcycle helmet, and that allows it to conform very tightly to the compound curves.

Use it to outline the chains stays, seat stays, front forks and frame on bikes. If your kids are not very good at coming home before dark, put it all over every thing, until they DO get home. Although not specified for cloth/leather, I used it on a motorcycle jacket with no problem. Put a square of this on the heels of their tennis shoes, too.

GOOD Stuff.

The Bicycle WheelThe Bicycle Wheel
Rated 5 Stars"Nice book. buy it, read it, buy a copy for your mother" 2009-08-15
This book is rather short, with many photos, and illustrations. If you skim through it, you can learn a little, if you read it through, let it percolate for a while, and read it again, you will find "you have learned much, grasshopper". So read it again, to learn more. It's that kind of book. Keep it around.

You learn a little theory, it explains what you have seen. You read more, deeper, and you begin to think, about designing a stronger wheel, instead of the tuned compromises we all live with. You also learn spoke sizes and terms, so you can communicate with other people intelligently, on the subject of building better wheels.

This book is better, for learning, theory, educating, but "The Art of Wheelbuilding" by gerd schraner is a superior reference work on the work bench.

Grado SR80 HeadphonesGrado SR80 Headphones
Rated 5 Stars"Grado SR80 Best headphones at a price." 2009-07-18
While I do not doubt that there are better headphones out there for many purposes, these have the advantage of being very good, widely available, and not hideously expensive. In fact what I was looking for was the best sounding headphone under $100. I was willing to look at oddball sets, both rare and bizarre, but I found these early on, and decided I was not going to find a more comfortable (or better sounding) pair for the price.

So, I bought them. Don't be fooled by the 1/8" phone plug on the end, these are a bit bulky for carrying around. But the reward is excellent sound reproduction.

Remember the first time you heard Cecilia by Simon and Garfunkel, on a proper sound system (as opposed to the muddy crap your car produced at the time) and all the detail in the song came through ("Pick it up! Pick it up!"). It was an epiphany, like the hand of god, laid on my ears, "Let my brother hear!"

And I heard and it was GOOD.

[...]

My ears are strangely made (and differently sized, one ear is large, and the other is EXTRA large), and I have never succeeded in using in-ear "earbud" style headphones. Hence THESE beasts. These things use more power than little portable battery powered devices commonly produce. Your batteries will not last as long. And your ears will get tired of being confined. Your neck muscles may even get tired.

But your mind will be free.

Buy these. Take them home. Use them.

Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance (2nd Edition)Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance (2nd Edition)
Rated 5 Stars"Comprehensive, simple bicycle maintenance book" 2009-04-07
A comprehensive yet simple bicycle maintenance book, well illustrated, very thorough.
For the beginning bike mechanic, and rider looking to do their own maintenance. Not as interesting as the Chainbreaker Bike book, but clearer type makes it more useful, better illustrations make the parts easier to understand.

I like it.

Pill Fob SpecialPill Fob Special
Rated 5 Stars"Pill Fob - container on your key chain." 2008-05-06
This is the largest size that you can find, I think. I certainly INTENDED it to be the biggest one you can buy. I need all that room to hold a single days supply of the 12 medications prescribed for me. Now some pills deteriorate in the presence of atmospheric moisture, and as the container seals tight, it keeps your pills fresh and clean.

Now I need another one to hold a sizable bit of rolled paper containing the medical conditions that got me to take all that medication. About an inch and a half tall and 3/4 " diameter, you can write a lot with that space. I intend to print out the various diagnoses, and the pills I am taking and will keep it on a ball chain, around my neck, with a flash drive to keep the machine readable version on. Even a bit of contact information, too. You can make this into a pill bottle, dry storage for information, and a place to store your keys. Does a great job.

IvanhoeIvanhoe
Rated 5 Stars"Best script, best casting I have ever seen of Ivanhoe" 2008-04-27
This is my all time favorite production of Ivanhoe. In this version, you do not encounter stick figures masquerading as characters. Ivanhoe is carefully delineated as is Cedric, the swineherd and for once the fool was not Ivanhoe's Squire! the usual collective "bad guys" of Hollywood productions gives way to three distinct personalities, and one of them has it in for Ivanhoe. Hollywood deserves to have their nose rubbed in their productions of previous Ivanhoes, like a naughty puppy. You can even understand the whys and wherefores of their motivation. It looks remarkably like a cast that is performing "De Bracy of the Knights Templar", or "Fool from Ivanhoe", or "Rebbecca and Ivanhoe", so clearly are they not just spear carriers in yet another tedious version of Ivanhoe. Glorious! The star of this production is the script, which is the most faithful to Sir Walter Scott's novel I have yet seen. You can see it all on screen.

If you have to do a report on Ivanhoe, as yet another novel for English Lit, you could do far worse than watch this film. Read the book after the film, and write a great report.

Leanings: The Best of Peter Egan from Cycle World MagazineLeanings: The Best of Peter Egan from Cycle World Magazine
Rated 5 Stars"Peter Egan is very engaging, writes a good column" 2006-09-18
The book consists of collected columns on various tours he has taken. A good read. His Cycleworld columns are the first page I look for each month, even before the eye candy of an Italian bike in all its naked glory, spread out for a centerfold.
