| Shoah | ||
![]() | "Stunning" | 2009-02-02 |
| I have a good friend who is a WWII veteran. He liberated one of the concentration camps. He has always refused to talk about what he saw there. He said he couldn't possibly put words together that would describe it. This film, with stunning simplicity, does just that. It shows us just how depraved and callous the Holocaust was, and just how easy it was for those who were not its victims to go along with it whether through indifference or malice. This film should be required viewing for everyone, everywhere. The Holocaust is over, but similar acts are going on in the world each and every day. Seeing this film will impart a sense of alarm and urgency. If everyone saw this film the day when this insanity stops might come a little sooner. If crying in front of other people makes you uncomfortable, then make sure you watch this alone. | ||
| John Lennon - Rock 'n' Roll | ||
![]() | "One of the most under-appreciate albums. Ever." | 2008-10-13 |
| Yes, it's a cover album, but it's unlike any cover album you've ever heard. Lennon pulls out many of the old classic tunes from his early days and absolutely tears 'em up. Many of them are even better than the originals. I honestly can't imagine anyone putting a better spin on "You Can't Catch Me." The song is raw and powerful in Lennon's hands. His version of "Be-Bop-A-Lula" is more upbeat and driving than Gene Vincent's and "Slippin' and Slidin'" rocks in ways even Little Richard (whom I love dearly) couldn't imagine. One thing I could never find for this album, however, are the credits for Lennon's backing band; they are uniformly excellent. The sax playing, in particular, is great. I honestly don't know anyone who has ever bought this album that has regretted it. It captures the essence of rock n' roll music. It's rollicking fun and absolutely timeless. John Lennon (perhaps the greatest rocker ever) doing what he does - and loves - best. How can you go wrong? | ||
| The Gulag Archipelago: 1918-1956 | ||
![]() | "The single greatest literary work of the twentieth century." | 2008-07-23 |
| The title of this review is truly the way I feel about this book. The first volume relates stories of arrest and interrogation, the second volume tells of life in the camps, and the third talks of life in internal exile. The second volume, in particular, is at times haunting and at others uplifting in ways that are absolutely beyond description. The story of the woman who was set aside to starve to death simply because she "wasn't worth her bread ration" is one of the many that will stay with you forever. The book was absolutely earth-shattering when it was published as the Soviet Union was still at the height of its power, but in bringing forth reports of Stalin's brutality it creates universal, timeless themes. Anyone who wishes to understand the human experience and to truly examine one's own soul must read this book. In this book Solzhenitsyn describes the intelligentsia as those who are preoccupied with the spiritual side of life. Reading this book will focus you on the spiritual in ways you could never imagine. A beautiful, stunning work. Monumental. | ||
| Chef! - The Complete Collection (Series 1-3) | ||
![]() | "Wish it sounded better......." | 2006-01-31 |
| If this review concerned itself only with the quality of the writing and the cast it would definitely contain five stars. This is one of the funniest shows ever created, especially if you've ever worked in a fine dining establishment or had any experience with a top flight chef. The sound quality, however, is not very good, making it difficult at times to understand the dialogue. This is unfortunate, because the pacing of the show is excellent and the wit is razor sharp. Perhaps it is my aging ears that are the problem, but I doubt it. In any event, Lenny Henry and crew were absolutely marvelous. This DVD is well worth the investment, even with the sub-par sound quality. The other reviewers on this page are dead-on in their praise. | ||
| Sonny Landreth - Grant Street | ||
![]() | "Absolutely Unbelieveable Guitar Work" | 2005-05-21 |
| Sonny Landreth is unquestionably the finest slide guitarist in the world. Period. Not only that, there are precious few guitarists of any sort - rock, blues, flamenco, or otherwise - that are in his class both in terms of technical mastery of the instrument and sheer beauty of their playing. The Grant Street album is up there with Live at Leeds and Live at the Fillmore East as one of the great live recordings ever. The energy and electricity of Sonny's live performances just leap out of the speakers. His guitar playing is positively inspired. A number of other reviewers have referred to this album as the best one released this year. They are correct; nobody will ever regret buying this album. A warning, though. if you've never heard Sonny before be prepared to spend a lot more money on his other albums. The Road We're On and South of I-10 are particularly good. | ||
